About 60 Researchers from Europe, Asia and USA have registered so far As announced in the second circular, the venue of the Colloquium and of the ice-breaker party (planned for September 24th at 6.30 pm) will be the Dipartimento di Scienze della Vita e Biologia dei Sistemi (Via Accademia Albertina 13). The social dinner is planned for September 25th, in a city centre typical Restaurant. This third circular includes maps, technical information and the schedule for the two days of oral and poster presentations. See you in Torino! The host Committee TECHNICAL INFORMATION Registration desk The registration desk will be open on Wednesday 24th September, slightly before and throughout the ice breaker party (from 6 to 9 PM) at the Dipartimento di Scienze della Vita e Biologia dei Sistemi (Via Accademia Albertina 13). It will be open again the next morning, from 8 am onward at the Conference venue, and then it will be regularly open during the days of the Conference. Pre-colloquium workshop “Morphology and Taxonomy of Lago-Mare dinocysts” The workshop will be held at the Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra (Via Valperga Caluso 35) on Wednesday 24th September, from 2 to 6 PM. The registration for the workshop is still open: please contact Adele Bertini (adele.bertini@unifi.it). You can reach the Dipartimento di Scienze della Vita e Biologia dei Sistemi on foot (about 20 min walk) or you can take the bus # 18 in Via Madama Cristina (Stop Valperga Caluso) and get off at Stop Giolitti (just in front of the Conference venue) (see map). The cost of the bus ticket is 1.50€. 2 RCMNS Interim Colloquium – Torino 2014 3rd Circular Presentations Oral presentations The length of each oral presentation (power point files) is scheduled for 15 minutes (including questions and discussions). A computer platform (PC) with projector will be available. Please, bring your presentation to the dedicated desk on an USB pen drive from 8 to 8:45 AM for the talks scheduled in the morning and during the lunch break for those scheduled in the afternoon. Poster presentations Posters will be displayed in the cloister of the Conference venue and the garden where, weather conditions permitting, we will have the coffee breaks. The size of the posters should not exceed the A0 format (portrait - 84 cm wide x 119 cm high). Presenters are required to hang their posters at the beginning of the Conference so that the posters will be available during the talks, coffee break and lunch times. Please note that, in order to give more attention to poster presentations, we have decided to organize a specific session dedicated to short oral communications (max 5 min long) of each poster. This session is scheduled for Thursday 25th from 4:45 to 6 PM, just before the first poster session (see the scientific program). Poster presenters should upload their power point file during lunch time at the dedicated desk. The official language of the Colloquium is English. Please note that it is possible to download the official logo of the meeting: download RCMNS logo here Field trip (September 27th and 28th) During this two days field trip, we will visit some relevant Messinian outcrops in the Langhe and in the Monferrato regions. Saturday 27th September Morning: departure by minibus at 8 AM (the meeting point will be communicated during the Conference). Visit to the Messinian section of Pollenzo, along the Tanaro river. Light lunch in a Restaurant close to the section. Afternoon: visit to the Messinian section of Govone. In the late afternoon, we will move to Motel Alba (http://www.motelalba.it), in the surrounding of the city of Alba, where we will stay overnight. Accommodation in single or double rooms. Wine tasting, wine cellar tour and dinner at Palazzo Rosso (http://www.palazzorosso.it), about 10 min drive from Motel Alba. 3 RCMNS Interim Colloquium – Torino 2014 3rd Circular Sunday 28th September Morning: departure at 8 PM to Moncalvo and Murisengo (Monferrato), where we will visit the local underground gypsum quarries. Light lunch in a Restaurant close to Murisengo. Afternoon: visit to the Verrua Savoia, where peculiar methane-derived carbonate rocks are exposed. The return to Torino is planned for 6-7 PM. IMPORTANT! Participants are kindly requested to bring their rain boots or (light) mountain boots: mud is ubiquitously present in the Piedmont outcrops. Post Colloquium Short Course “Evaporites: from field to laboratory” The short course, given by B. Charlotte Schreiber, will be held at the Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra (Via Valperga Caluso 35) on Monday 29th September. The registration for the course is still open: please contact Francesco Dela Pierre (francesco.delapierre@unito.it). 4 RCMNS Interim Colloquium – Torino 2014 3rd Circular Preliminary program: Morning (9:30 AM – 1 PM): chemistry of the world’s oceans and atmosphere through time, lithology and general chemistry of evaporites (including isotopes) and what variations may mean. Detailed studies of the primary lithologies, the burial history of evaporites with the associated diagenesis. Stratigraphy of various deposits of gypsum, anhydrite and halite and the associated carbonates/clastics. Review of the economic significance and importance of evaporites. Afternoon (2:30 PM – 4:30 PM): observations of hand samples and thin sections in the Laboratory. Participants are encouraged to bring their own material from their study areas. If possible participants should prepare a simple stratigraphic section of their study and have a small power point (or enlarged photographs) of the outcrops, to accompany the samples. Accommodation in Torino Torino offers a wide range of accommodation options, but we suggest that you choose a place close to the Meeting venue in order to enjoy the atmosphere of the centre of the city. We kindly ask you to arrange your booking directly. For your convenience we suggest the following hotels that offers special prices for the RCMNS attendants. The number of hotel rooms is limited.
