DOES GOD EXIST? Click Above UNIT QUESTIONS What does “God” mean? How does science correlate with the existence of God? What proof do we have that shows God’s existence? THE EXISTENCE OF GOD By: Amanda Robinson OVERVIEW The meaning of “God” The 5 Proofs of Thomas Aquinas • • • • • The Argument of Motion The Nature of Efficient Cause Possibility and Necessity The Gradation to be Found in Things The Governance of the World THE ARGUMENT OF MOTION Some things are in motion, yet anything moved is moved by another. There can’t be an infinite series of movers. Therefore there must be a first mover (that itself isn’t moved by another). GOD MEANS… god/gäd/ Noun: (in Christianity and other monotheistic religions) The creator and ruler of the universe and source of all moral authority; the Supreme Being. The Nature of Efficient Cause Some things are caused, anything caused was caused by another. There can’t be an infinite series of causes. Therefore, there must be a first cause Possibility and Necessity Every contingent being at some times fails to exist. If everything were contingent, then at some time there would have been nothing, and so there would be nothing now. So not everything is contingent, meaning there is a necessary being. The Gradation to be Found in Things Some things are greater than others. Whatever is great to any degree gets its greatness from that which is the greatest. So, there is a greatest being, which is the source of all greatness. The Governance of the World Many things in the world that lack intelligence act for an end. Whatever acts for an end must be directed by an intelligent being. So the world must have an intelligent designer. IN CONCLUSION Thomas Aquinas has 5 proofs to the existence of God. His proof of the argument of motion gives evidence to the correlation between science and God. The word “God” means…
