Putting Your Trust In A
Pocket With A Hole In It
Trust can be mis-guided.
Be sure that your trust is in
something that will be secure.
Introduction
• The Bible is full of warnings of where to put
your trust.
• “Do not Trust” is repeated through the
prophets writings.
• The problem was that people were willing to
put their trust in just about anything other
than God.
• It is no different today.
Introduction
• Sometimes we are faced with a decision of
where we put our trust.
• Putting your trust in anything other than God
is like putting your money in a purse with a big
hole in it.
• What little you do have, will disappear and be
lost from you.

Material pursuits.
Putting our trust in “THINGS”.
While some things make our life easier….
Those things cannot secure our soul.
While we may feel successful if we have lots of
things,
• We must remember that we cannot take it
with us when we die.
Things We Trust In That Prove Empty
• Luke 12:15: “And he said to them, “Beware,
and be on your guard against every form of
greed; for not even when one has an
abundance does his life consist of his
possessions.”
Things We Trust In That Prove Empty
• Matthew 6:19-21: “Do not lay up for
yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth
and rust destroy, and where thieves break in
and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures
in heaven, where neither moth nor rust
destroys, and where thieves do not break in or
steal; for where your treasure is, there will
your heart be also.”
Things We Trust In That Prove Empty
• We must never lose sight of our real purpose
in our lives.
• To glorify God in our actions and example.
• Matthew 5:16.. Let your light so shine so that
others may see your good works, and glorify
your Father who is in heaven.
• 1 Peter 4:11 “…so that in all things, God may
be glorified.”
Things We Trust In That Prove Empty
• Ecclesiastes 12:13 "Let us hear the conclusion
of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His
commandments, for this is the whole duty of
man."
• Let us not forget that is why we are here.
• More important that making wages, is making
a life suitable for God.
• God will take care of the rest for you.
Things We Trust In That Prove Empty
• Material things will not endure.
• Matthew 16:26 “For what will a man be
profited, if he gains the whole world, and
forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in
exchange for his soul?
• Putting trust in material things, is like putting
your money into a purse with holes in it.
Things We Trust In That Prove Empty
• The doctrines of men.
• Such as the doctrine of “Faith Only”.
• False doctrine exist only because ignorance of
God’s word allows it in.
• While those who teach the doctrine of “Faith
Only” promote it as being very comforting—
• The truth of the matter is that God requires
more than faith alone.
Things We Trust In That Prove Empty
• James 2:14-20 “"What doth it profit, my
brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but have
not works? can that faith save him? if a brother
or sister be naked and in lack of daily food, and
one of you say unto them, Go in peace, be ye
warmed and filled, and yet ye give them not the
things needful to the body; what doth it profit?
Even so faith, if it have not works, is dead in
itself.
Things We Trust In That Prove Empty
• Yea, a man will say, Thou hast faith, and I have
works; show me thy faith apart from thy
works, and I by my works will show thee my
faith. Thou believest that God is one; thou
doest well; the demons also believe, and
shudder. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that
faith apart from works is barren?"
Things We Trust In That Prove Empty
• Just wearing the name of Christ will prove
empty.
• We should be living as if Christ is guiding us in
all we do.
• Some call this half-way Christianity.
• Since we are to apply “ALL DILIGENCE” (2
Peter 1:5), anything less than all is not
enough.
Things We Trust In That Prove Empty
• A problem we have is that many feel that by
giving a few hours to God on Sunday morning
will allow them the rest of the time for
themselves.
• Our life consist of more than the few hours we
assemble each week.
• As Paul said in Philippians 1:21 “for me to live
is Christ, and to die is gain”.
Things We Trust In That Prove Empty
• Denominations are bags with holes in them.
• The people who belong to these groups have
been deceived.
• They trust in their church, but the scripture
teaches what God wants,
• And these groups are not doing what God has
authorized.
Things We Trust In That Prove Empty
• People put their trust in something foreign to
scripture.
• People put their trust in a name God has not
authorized.
• People put their trust in a governing body that
God did not set up.
Things We Trust In That Prove Empty
• People put their trust in themselves.
• Just like the people of old who trusted in
other nations, other gods, other material
things—
• Their trust turned out to be empty, because
they did not trust in God.
• God is our trust .
• Psalm 118:8 “It is better to take refuge in the
LORD than to trust in man”.
Things We Trust In That Prove Empty
• Jeremiah 17:5-6 :Thus says the LORD, ‘Cursed
is the man who trusts in mankind and makes
flesh his strength, and whose heart turns away
from the LORD, for he will be like a bush in the
desert and will not see when prosperity
comes, but will live in stony wastes in the
wilderness, a land of salt without inhabitant”.
Things We Trust In That Prove Empty
• Jeremiah 17:7-8 “Blessed is the man who
trusts in the LORD and whose trust is the
LORD. For he will be like a tree planted by the
water that extends its roots by a stream and
will not fear when the heat comes; but its
leaves will be green, and it will not be anxious
in a year of drought nor cease to yield fruit.”
Conclusion
• Seems like people put their trust in anything
and everything other than God.
• Putting our trust in anything other than God is
like putting your trust in a pocket with holes.
• What little you do have, will be lost.
• But putting trust in God is a sure thing,
• Those who trust Him will not be disappointed.
