Management of medicines
The registered person must protect service users
against the risks associated with the unsafe use
and management of medicines, by means of the
making of appropriate arrangements for the
obtaining, recording, handling, using, safe
keeping, dispensing, safe administration and
disposal of medicines used for the purposes of
the regulated activity.
Providing personalised care through the effective use
of medicines
Ensure the medicines given are appropriate person-centred
by taking account of their:

choices
lifestyle
cultural and religious beliefs
allergies and intolerances (e.g. penicillin, egg)
existing medical conditions and prescriptions

• recommended prescribing regimes. (e.g. local formularies,
BNF)

Clear procedures followed in practice, monitored and
reviewed for medicines handling that include
• obtaining, Controlled drug private prescriptions
• safe storage, Controlled drug cupboard
• prescribing, SOP and SOP for controlled drugs
dispensing, SOP to include labelling requirements
• preparation, SOP
• administration, SOP
• monitoring and disposal. SOP and SOP for controlled

Systems should be in place to cover the
following procedures:
• Risk Management Arrangements for reporting incidents, errors and
near misses, NPSA reporting, prescription security,
• Arrangements to implement and act upon medicine related patient
safety communications issued via the alert system. SOP,

• Up to date Patient Medication Record including a list of all
medication taken.
• Compliance with controlled drug regulations. Clear procedures for
the monitoring and review of controlled drugs. Accountable Officer.
