The sound pulses are reflected at temperature inhomogeneities in the air. The temperature inhomogeneities move with the wind, which result in frequency changes (Doppler Effect) between emitted and received sound pulses. The SODAR antenna receives the echoes and they are analysed. The result is stored, processed, and presented. A SODAR measurement in at least three directions provides a three-dimensional wind profile. Doppler Effect Imagine standing on a street and listening to an ambulance siren. When it is driving towards you the sirens will have a certain frequency. When it has passed the frequency has changed. This physical phenomenon is called “Doppler Effect” or “Doppler Shift” and is widely used in a variety of different situations for remote sensing speed and direction. Some examples are submarines, meteorology, aviation, medical imaging, flow measurement and astronomy. Stationary object 340 Hz 340 Hz 340 Hz Moving object 340 Hz 324 Hz 358 Hz Phased Array SODAR Scintec SODAR Traditional SODARs utilize only three transducers. This makes them very sensitive to individual directional errors. Traditional SODARs also have to be carefully calibrated. Phased array is a stationary flat cluster with many small transducers. The directions are created with short delays of rows and columns which result in a certain emission angle (Huygens principle). The emission angles can be adjusted. WindCollector2 is equipped with a Scintec SODAR SFAS. The Scintec SFAS is an phased array SODAR with modern multi-direction and multi-frequency technology. In comparison with measuring masts, the Scintec Sodar SFAS has shown that it is a better choice. Compared to other SODAR brands the SODARs from Scintec provide the best results. Advantages • No need for building permits. • Very easy installation. • Vertical wind data and turbulence data. • Measurements up to hub height and above. • Compact and lightweight • Superior Phased Array Technology. Features • Maximum range up to 500 m. • Vertical resolution down to 5 m. • Multi-frequency technology. • Simultaneous multi-beam technology. • Advanced analysis software included. • Data is compatible with WindPro. • High quality components. • Modular system for flexibility and security. A truly mobile integrated SODAR High quality Modular WindCollector2 is a truly mobile wind measurement system, completed with a superior SODAR and a high quality mobile power solution. All components are carefully selected to give you the highest durability, flexibility, and the best measurement results. WindCollector2 is a stand-alone system which makes it very flexible to transport and handle. Compact WindCollector2 has a very small footprint and low weight, which makes it the smallest integrated Sodar system in the world. User friendly Easy to install. Easy to use. Easy data transfer. Easy to maintain. High Security The trailer is removed from the measuring site, leaving the WindCollector2 protected against theft. The electronic control system, the alarm systems, and the wind measurement can be accessed remotely. An automatic fire extinguisher system is optional. Superior technology The built-in Scintec Sodar SFAS consists of 64 transducers and utilizes a multi-band technique with 10 frequencies in 9 directions. The signal pulses used give you a true 5 m resolution. The frequency range is 2525 – 4850 Hz. For all climates Thanks to the inverted horn design with antenna heating, Scintec Sodar SFAS works in virtually all weather conditions. The Phased-Array technology makes the measurement totally temperature independent. making wind measurement easy! Scintec APRun, a Multi-role Software Included In the field-PC, Scintec APRun is used for controlling the sodar, data collection and Self-tests. In your office-PC, Scintec APRun is used for data analysis, presentation, preparation for reports and reprocessing data. APRun also has built-in Web interface, alarm events, timer events, and more. • Scintec Sodar SFAS with antenna heating Wind Data A complete set of wind parameters are measured on all selected heights and are stored in the RAW-files. ASCII-text files are created automatically in the field-PC with a selected set of parameters. This makes it easier when using the data in other software. These files can be re-created anytime in the future from the RAW-files. Exported data in row format is compatible with WindPro. • Field-PC in MIL-standard. Preconfigured for measuring, data transfer and remote desktop • Super silent diesel generator • Maintanence-free battery pack • Intelligent battery charger • Siemens control system for the mobile power system • E-mail/SMS/Text maintenance alarm • Mobile internet with external antenna • Purpose-built unit with lockable doors, metal chassis and outriggers • Open design for easy maintenance • Tailor made car trailer • GPS-tracker • Alarm sensors in all doors • Solar panel with regulator • Automatic heating system • Fuel water absorption filter (65 l/min) Options • ATV trailer • Automatic fire extinguisher system • Extra Solar panels • RHT-package (Relative Humidity and Temperature data at ground level) • RASS-extension for temperature measurements up to 500 m • windRASS-extension for radio-acoustic wind- and temperature measurement up to 600 m • Training Auto adjusting SODAR Horizontal adjustment No need for temperature measurement Scintec SODAR SFAS is less sensitive to levelling errors than a traditional SODAR. With the phased array technology the emission angles are created in the software, using Huygens principle. When the SODAR is emitting in one main angle (24°) it also emits in one mirrored angle (19°) and data is collected from both directions simultaneously. Phased array SODARs don’t rely on an additional temperature measurement thanks to varying emission angles. N 24° E 24° Emission angle of a Conventional Sodar Antenna: Sound Fixed emission angle defined by orientation of transducer. α W 19° S 19° Emission angle of a Phased Array Sodar Antenna: Emission angle depends on antenna geometry, time delay and varies with sound speed: Sound • x α An overestimation in a main direction will automatically be countered by an underestimation in the mirrored direction, thus making the measurement accurate despite the original leveling problem. sin α α Speaker Distance d Doppler Measurement of Horizontal Wind: Sound V 24° Ö 19° S 24° • p The measurement is based on the Doppler effect (with sound speed dependance): α α ∆f f Horizontal Wind Speed u All main directions are marked by solid colors. All mirrored directions are marked with toned colors. p −2 = c sound The horizontal wind speed with Conventional Antennas is calculated from: u − ∆f 1 = c sound 2 f sin α Temperature and sound speed: Requires continuous correction to avoid errors! With Phased Array Antennas the varying emission angles eliminate the dependance on sound speed: u A total of 9 directions is used by the Scintec Sodar SFAS. Sodar measures the projection of the horizontal wind speed onto the direction of sound emission: = u sin αp N 19° This fact protects against, for example, less than perfect installations and land subsidence if the SODAR is installed during winter time and will be left until the summer. t x ∆ c sound = = d d − ∆f d = c sound 2 f ∆ t c sound (No correction required) With Phased Array Antennas the accuracy of horizontal wind speed results does not rely on additional temperature sensor measurements!
