What is Direct Speech

DIRECT SPEECH gives the exact words said by a person. It is used when you want to QUOTE the same words the speaker used.

What is Indirect Speech

Indirect Speech is also called Reported Speech.

It is used to communicate what someone else said, but without using the exact words.

Someone says something to you and later you want to tell someone else what was said. Hench on such occasions you can use indirect speech .

(E.g.)

He said that he was going to come.

(The person's exact words were "I'm going to come.“ (Direct speech))

a)She says that it is raining hard. b)He said that he had painted the ceiling blue.

In the above picture the fireman’s statement is a direct speech and the woman's report on what the fireman said is an Indirect Speech.

Direct speech : “ I have no intention of quitting my job.”

Indirect speech : He said he had no intention of quitting his job.

Direct speech : “Have you ever been to Phuket?”

Indirect speech : She asked if I had ever been to Phuket?

Direct speech : “Can we stay more than a month on a tourist visa?”

Indirect speech : The group leader asked if they could stay more than a month on a tourist visa?

Indirect speech : He asked her if the interview was finished.

She replied that it was finished.

Then , he asked her if she would like to out with him.

She told him that she was busy that night and forever.
