Text and arrows are pointing to what I
did along the way, as requested
AIM: How can we solve a system of one linear and one
quadratic equation in two variables by identifying and
labeling intersection points in graphs (and checking)?
DO NOW: Graph the following linear function using the
slope and the y-intercept. (Hint: Is it in Slope-intercept
form?)
3y – 6= 2x
Vocabulary: Solution, Systems of equations,
intersection, linear function, parabola
HW: NY 755 #1-6
Animation
The next slide displays a picture of my co-teacher. She gets shot out of a canon
modeling a straight line, and the student, Joey (who is an avid skateboarder)
intercepts her in his quadratic path.
I uploaded the photo of the background and the canon, layering the canon in
front. The teacher’s picture is moving right with a pinwheel at the end, and the
student is following a curved path (arc down). Timing had to be adjusted so that
the two will collide.
Make a prediction. What will happen?
Purpose
Used to demonstrate how a linear /quadratic system solution set is found.
SKETCH a possible Quadratic linear system
that would model Ms. Cohen’s and Joey’s
paths.
WHAT IF MS.
Cohen’s
canon was
facing the
OTHER
direction?
WHAT if the canon were shooting
VERTICALLY from the bottom?
ONE, TWO or NO

GRAPHING LINEAR – QUADRATIC
SYSTEMS
STEP 1 – Use the slope intercept method to graph your linear equation
(y=mx + b)
STEP 2- Graph the parabola by finding the axis of symmetry, vertex and
making a table of values. x= ( -b/2a)
STEP 3- Where they intersect is your solution!!! (Just like the linear system)
Practice #3
Summary
In your notebook: What is the meaning of a
solution to a linear-quadratic system? What
does it look like?
How do I find it? USE SENTENCES!!
