A man and his Master 1 John 2:15-17 There is a progression in scripture: • • • obedience love Lordship/Master Matthew 6:24, “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.” 1 John 2:15–17 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever. rival - a person who is competing for the same object or goal as another, or one who tries to equal or outdo another. The challenge: “do not love the world” The world is synonymous with the kingdom of darkness. It is dangerous. It is deadly. It is designed by Satan to appeal to these three avenues into the fallen heart. The challengers: 3 gateways Gateway #1 – “the lust of the flesh” Gateway #2 – “the lust of the eyes” Gateway #3 – “the boastful pride of life” Stop considering the world precious with the result that you love it, and the things in the world. If anyone as a habit of life is considering the world precious and is therefore loving it, there does not exist the love possessed by the Father in him. Because everything which is in the world, the passionate desire of the flesh, and the passionate desire of the eyes, and the insolent and empty assurance which trusts in the things that serve the creature life, is not from the Father as a source but is from the world as a source. And the world is being caused to pass away, and its passionate desire. But the one who keeps on habitually doing the will of God abides forever. (translation by Kenneth Wuest) TAKE AWAY Reading 1 John 2, prayerfully ask God to show you any areas of your life where the enemy has created a rival for your heart. Using the three gateways from 1 John 2, write a prayer to God expressing your desire to place each area of your life under his Lordship. Gateway #1 - pleasure Gateway #2 - possessions Gateway #3 - pride
