many historical events have taken place in Montreuil-sur-Mer that it is
impossible to fit them all into one guide.

zo veel evenementen plaatsgevonden in Montreuil-sur-Mer, dat ze
onmogelijk allemaal kunnen worden samengevat in een gids.

Montreuil-sur-Mer owes much to the kings of France. In 987, Hugh
Capet, the first of the Capetian kings, turned Montreuil-sur-Mer into the
only maritime port in the royal territory, at that time not much bigger than
the Ile de France. Seeking to defend this highly strategic position, Philippe
Auguste built a powerful royal château here in the thirteenth century, and
granted the town a Communal Charter.
Three centuries later, after his defeat by the troops of Charles V who
ransacked the town in 1537, Francis I ordered Montreuil-sur-Mer to be
rebuilt and surrounded it with a solid rampart, capable of withstanding
the English cannon. In 1544, Montreuil-sur-Mer even held out against the
army of Henry VIII!
In 1567, Charles IX ordered the construction of a citadel: throughout its
history, Montreuil-sur-Mer has always been a strategic town to be defended!
Over his long reign, Louis XIV visited Montreuil-sur-Mer on five occasions
and in 1675 asked his Royal Architect, Vauban, to make improvements
to the citadel ramparts, built by his predecessors.
After the French Revolution, the then General Bonaparte looked longingly
on England from here. Installed as First Consul, he established his camp
at Boulogne with a detachment in Montreuil-sur-Mer. He also stayed in
the town as Emperor, with his wife, the Empress Josephine.
Pursued by the Republicans, in 1848 the last King of France, LouisPhilippe, spent his last night on French soil at a manor in the Montreuillois
Region.

Montreuil-sur-Mer heeft veel te danken aan de koningen van Frankrijk. In

kasteel bouwen en geeft hij de stad een gemeentelijk handvest.
Drie eeuwen later laat Frans Ie, verslagen door de troepen van Karel V die
de stad bezetten in 1537, Montreuil-sur-Mer heropbouwen en omwallen
door een stevige muur die de Engelse kanonnen kan weerstaan. In 1544
biedt Montreuil-sur-Mer weerstand tegen de troepen van Henry VIII!
In 1567 geeft Karel IX opdracht tot de bouw van een citadel: Montreuilsur-Mer is nog steeds een strategische stad die moet verdedigd worden!
Tijdens zijn lange regeerperiode brengt Lodewijk XIV vijf keer een bezoek
aan Montreuil-sur-Mer waarbij hij in 1675 vraagt aan Vauban om de
stadsmuur en citadel, gebouwd door zijn voorgangers, te verbeteren.
Na de Franse Revolutie lonkt Generaal Bonaparte naar Engeland. In de
hoedanigheid van Eerste Consul richt hij zijn kamp op bij Boulogne en
deels in Montreuil-sur-Mer. Hij zal ook in de stad verblijven wanneer hij
keizer is, samen met zijn vrouw, de keizerin Josephine.
Achternagezeten door de Republikeinen brengt de laatste koning van
Frankrijk, Louis-Philippe, zijn laatste nacht door op Franse bodem in 1848
in een herenhuis van Montreuillois.

The GHQ project / Het GHQ project
From 1916 to 1919, the General Headquarters of the British Empire were established at Montreuil-sur-Mer. The decision-making
centre of the entire Imperial Army during the Great War, the headquarters were commanded by Marshal Douglas Haig who coordinated
the whole of the British front, stretching from Belgium to the Aisne. As part of the commemorations of the Centenary of the First
World War, an interpretation centre devoted to the GHQ will see the light of day in the near future. Pending its inauguration in 2016,
an exhibition «A friendly invasion, le monde à nos portes» (A friendly invasion, the world on our doorstep) has been installed in the vast
casemates of the Citadel and retraces that chapter in history.

The Citadel of Montreuil-sur-Mer was constructed, from 1567 onwards, on the foundations of a
former thirteenth-century royal château. A veritable outcrop over the Canche Valley, the Citadel offers
its visitors a glimpse of 800 years of fortification development in a preserved natural environment.

The history of Montreuil-sur-Mer is inextricably linked to religious history.
The very name «Montreuil» is itself derived from the term «small
monastery».
It is accepted that Breton monks from Landévennec, having been expelled
by the Normans, arrived in Montreuil-sur-Mer in 913 and sought the
protection of Count Helgaud both for themselves and for the relics of
their founder, Saint Winwaloe. Some time later, the Benedictines of Saint
Austrebertha are also thought to have settled in Montreuil-sur-Mer, with
more relics.
During the Middle Ages, this precious collection of saintly relics drew
pilgrims from all over Europe. Now called the «Cité des Corps Saints» (City
of Saintly Bodies), the town grew in prosperity. Later, Carthusian monks
and nuns built and ran hospitals and refuges. They thus provided aid to the
sick and wounded - both civilian and military. Every square in Montreuil-surMer bears testimony to this profoundly religious history.
The museum has conserved works from this past, illustrating the
changes occurring in thinking and practice down the centuries, among
them Medieval reliquaries, statues and sculptures from the Middle Ages
and Neo-Gothic gold and silverware.

De geschiedenis van Montreuil-sur-Mer is nauw verbonden met de
religieuze geschiedenis.
Is de naam «Montreuil» zelf niet afgeleid van «kloostertje»?
Het is bekend dat Bretonse monniken, door de Noormannen verjaagd uit
Landevennec, aankwamen in Montreuil-sur-Mer in 913 en bescherming
vroegen aan graaf Helgaud, voor zichzelf en voor de relikwieën van hun
stichter, St. Guénolé. Enige tijd later weten ook de benedictijnen van St.
Austreberthe zich te vestigen in Montreuil-sur-Mer met andere relikwieën.
Tijdens de Middeleeuwen trekt deze waardevolle collectie van relikwieën
van heiligen pelgrims aan uit heel Europa. De stad staat voortaan bekend
als de «Cité des Corps Saints», en wordt welvarend. Later bouwen
en beheren de Kartuizers en Monialen (slotzusters) ziekenhuizen en
gestichten. Ze komen zo te hulp aan de zieken en gewonde burgers en
soldaten. Op elk plein van Montreuil-sur-Mer zijn er bewijzen te vinden van
deze diepe religieuze geschiedenis.
Uit dat verleden heeft het museum werken bewaard die de
veranderingen in de het denken en handelen door de eeuwen heen
illustreren: middeleeuwse reliekschrijnen, beelden en sculpturen uit de
Middeleeuwen, neogotisch goudwerk...

La Chartreuse Notre-Dame-des-Prés
L'Abbatiale Saint-Saulve
Constructed in the 12th century on the site of an older monastery dedicated
to Saint Walloy, in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries the abbey church
welcomed pilgrims drawn by the many relics, preserved for centuries and
placed on view in radiating chapels.
De abdij werd in de 12e eeuw gebouwd op de plaats van een voormalig
klooster dat gewijd was aan St. Walloy, en herbergde, in de 12e en 13e
eeuw, de pelgrims die werden aangetrokken door de talrijke relikwieën die

Founded in the fourteenth century and reconstructed in 1875, the Chartreuse (Carthusian monastery) was
occupied by monks right up to 1901. Converted into a military and later a civilian hospital it became a hospiceasylum in 1947 and remained so until 1998. Recently, a grouping of public authorities, sponsors, private
benefactors and private investors have taken action to have it restored in keeping with its historic purpose.

La Chapelle Saint - Nicolas
The Hôtel-Dieu was founded in the thirteenth century by Gauthier de Maintenay, the Lord of
Montreuil-sur-Mer. It retained its function as a hospital until 1992. Modified in the nineteenth
century, the Neo-Gothic chapel was built onto the former Hôtel-Dieu, now the Hôtel Hermitage.
Site not open to the public. Restoration work is in preparation.
Het Hôtel-Dieu werd in het begin van de 13e eeuw gesticht door Gauthier Maintenay, kasteelheer
van Montreuil-sur-Mer. Het behoudt zijn bestemming als ziekenhuis tot 1992. De neogotische
kapel, herbouwd in de 19e eeuw, grenst aan het voormalige Hôtel-Dieu, vandaag het Hôtel
Hermitage. Site niet toegankelijk voor het publiek. Een restauratie is gepland.
L'Eglise Saint-Josse-au-Val
The earliest historical mention of the Church of St-Josse-au-Val
dates back to 1042. It was modified during work carried out
in the eighteenth century. Recently renovated, it is open to the
public in the afternoon in July and August.

Montreuil-sur-Mer has retained many picturesque streets, bearing
witness to its rich Medieval past.
As you wander along these cobblestone streets, you are bound to come
across other strollers seeking out the romantic atmosphere of the Rue
du Clape-en-Haut or preferring the craft activity in the Rue du Clape-enBas.
The urban landscape of Montreuil-sur-Mer was reshaped in the
eighteenth century. The upper town was inhabited by the gentry. The
local bourgeoisie, the middle classes, constructed many fine townhouses,
replacing the tiny wooden-beamed Medieval houses. The working classes
occupied the small houses in the lower town.
In 1804, the movement back and forth of the Napoleonic troops brought
in its wake a flourishing cultural life to Montreuil-sur-Mer.
During the First World War, the rear base of the English Army was
established here, under the orders of Marshal Douglas Haig. The street
drainage, the drinking water supply, the tennis courts in the trench of the
Citadel, the conversion of the grain store into a theatre... all are examples
of the contribution made to the town by British soldiers. Plans for an
interpretation centre on the British General Headquarters are currently
under development. (see page 5)
The Townhouses / De herenhuizen
Between 1735 and 1810, over 40 fine townhouses were constructed in
Montreuil by the nobility and the upper bourgeoisie. These grand residences
belonged to families with the greatest influence on local - even national history.

In Montreuil-sur-Mer zijn vele pittoreske straatjes bewaard gebleven

Lopend langs de geplaveide straten, zal u zeker wandelaars
tegenkomen die op zoek zijn naar de romantische sfeer van Clapeen-Haut of de voorkeur geven aan de ambacht in de straat van Clapeen-Bas.
Tijdens de 18e eeuw wordt het stedelijke landschap van Montreuilsur-Mer hertekend. De bovenstad wordt aristocratisch. De burgerij
uit de omgeving bouwt vele herenhuizen, op de plaats van de kleine
middeleeuwse vakwerkhuizen. De werknemers vestigen zich in de
kleine huizen van de benedenstad.
In 1804 zorgt het komen en gaan van de troepen van Napoleon
Montreuil-sur-Mer voor een rijk cultureel leven.
Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog vestigt de achterhoedebasis van het
Britse leger zich in Montreuil-sur-Mer, onder het bevel van maarschalk
Douglas Haig. De schone straten, de voorziening van drinkwater, de
tennisbanen in de vestingsgracht van de citadel, het gebruik van de
graanschuur als theater... zijn allemaal voorbeelden van de bijdrage
van de Britse soldaten in de stad . Er loopt momenteel een project
van het interpretatiecentrum over de generale staf van het Britse Rijk.

Dissected by the well known Route Nationale 1, now renamed the
D901, and scored by the valleys of the Canche, Course and Authie
rivers, the region of Montreuil-sur-Mer is blessed with a great variety
of pastoral landscapes.
Nestling among these landscapes are many picturesque, flowerdecked villages with an abundance of well-preserved architecture.
Churches, manor houses, historical farms... all invitations to take a

Attin
Skirted by the River Canche, this village is one of the oldest in the Montreuillois Region (seventh
century). In former times, the people of the village used to cross the river in a «bac» (a flatbottomed boat), the only means of crossing the river on the route from Paris to England.
Het dorp, dat grenst aan de Canche, is een van de oudste van Montreuillois (7e eeuw). Vroeger
staken de mensen de rivier over op een veerboot, een boot met platte bodem, de enige manier

Le Gîte du Marronnier

The Château de Beaurepaire dates from the nineteenth century. It has been famous since
Marshall Douglas Haig took up residence there between 1916 and 1919. Marshall Haig
commanded the British troops whose HQ were established in Montreuil-sur-Mer during the
First World War.
Het Château de Beaurepaire dateert van de 19e eeuw. Het werd beroemd nadat
de maarschalk Douglas Haig er verbleef van 1916 tot 1919. Hij leidde de Britse

century polychrome statues and a
large eighteenth century painting
depicting Notre-Dame du Mont

the Church of Saint-Léger conserves

Blaise. This saint is invoked in Germanic
regions for protection against storms

but he is also revered as a healer of
sore throats.

The Manor of Campigneulles-lesPetites was built in the fifteenth century.
It was from this period onwards that
the construction of lordly residences
gradually expanded, in the Boulonnais
Region in particular.

La Caloterie
The village is divided by the River
Course. Formerly called the River
Estréelles, this water course flows
very quickly, hence its more recent
name. This rapid flow was harnessed by
many watermills that specialised in the
production of walnut oil.

voorheen de Estréelles rivier werd

Situated at the entrance to the village,
the château could have been lifted
straight out of a fairy tale. Dating from
the end of the nineteenth century, it is
of Louis XIII style combining brick and
chalk. The left-hand wing was shortened
during the Second World War.

castles they constructed imposing residences: manor houses.

North, to enjoy the protection of the
fortified city. It was at this time that
the flamboyant Gothic-style Church
of Saint Vaast Was built. It is listed
on the French Supplementary
Inventory of Historical Monuments.

The manorial farm stands next to the church. Its layout is typical of farms with an
enclosed courtyard. The spacious yard is surrounded by farm buildings and the dwelling
house. Further on, on the right, you can see an eighteenth century mill standing beside
the River Course.

Just below the church stands a
seventeenth century manor house.
This massive construction features a
regular white facade punctuated by
gently arched windows. The occupants
of the dwelling would reach the adjoining
church through a door opening directly
onto the graveyard.

This village boasts two highly reputed inns of wood and adobe construction: the Auberge du Vieux
Logis and the Auberge de la Grenouillère. The latter is established in the former house of the Bac
ferryman (see the section on Attin).

The village of Inxent is known for its
traditional adobe dwellings. Its inn is
a remarkable example of this, and the
eating there is legendary!

This is the last village in the Pas-de-Calais, crossed by the River Authie which forms the
border with the Somme. From the twelfth century onwards, two separate villages existed
on either side of the river; to differentiate between them, the patronymic name of the village
parish was added: Nempont-St-Firmin and Nampont-St-Martin!
Dit is het laatste dorp van Pas-de-Calais, en wordt doorkruist door de Authie die samen

Don’t be mistaken, this name in fact covers three population centres: Lépine, Puits-Bérault
and Ebruyères. On the town hall square, the renovation of the «Flot», a pond that used to
be used for watering livestock, allows the recovery of rainwater through a wetland area and
has restored its once threatened biodiversity.

Les Chambres d’hôtes du Val d’Authie
In the centre of the village, you cannot miss the Fief d’Hérambault. Built in 1845
by the Mayor, this remarkable little château now houses a gite complex: Cottages
Nature of Mr Gantiez.

From the seventeenth to the twentieth century, the village was an important pottery producing
centre. The pottery made here was characterised by dishes varnished with lead and decorated with
figures or a cockerel, typical of popular art.

The Chapel of Notre-Dame de la Salette stands
at the entrance to the Bois du Mouflet woods. It
acquired the patronym «Mouflet» in memory of the
Dauphin Louis XVII. When he was asked what he
would like to take into prison with him, he replied “I
only want my dog Mouflet...».
Bij de ingang van het bos van Mouflet staat de kapel
van Notre-Dame de la Salette. De achternaam
Mouflet werd gegeven ter herinnering aan de
kroonprins Lodewijk XVII. Toen hem werd gevraagd

Recques-sur-Course
The eye is drawn to the château standing at the highest point of the village. It dates from the
eighteenth century and is of Louis XV style. In the nineteenth century, at the time of the Camp
of Montreuil, the Château de Recq was used as the residence of Marshall Ney. Today, it is
privately owned.

The municipality of Montreuil alone is home to 14 different species and
so represents a major site at regional scale. The many cavities in the
fortifications offer an ideal shelter for these fragile mammals, highly
vulnerable to disturbances that can interfere with their lifecycle.

Picardy terroir. Andouillette sausages, calf’s head, steaks or sausages
from the Autruche du Marronnier ostrich farm... demanding gourmets
will relish the specialities offered by the food suppliers of Montreuil and
the country inns. The Confrérie de la Tête de Veau (Fraternity of the
Calf’s Head) works to preserve the time-honoured recipes.

Telling the story of the Montreuillois...
Ze vertellen het verhaal van Montreuillois...
Montreuil-sur-Mer has always inspired great writers, the like of Lawrence
Sterne, Arthur Young and Victor Hugo… Novelists, playwrights, today’s
writers have the talent to tell the small stories that make up the big
story, as evidenced in the work of Philippe Valcq.
Although these artists love to play with words, others prefer to tell the
story of the Montreuillois in pictures through painting, photography and
video. Watch the short film «913: l’Exode» (913: the Exodus) by Benoît
Bremer, and plunge into the mysterious atmosphere of Montreuillois
legends.
Een eeuwigheid lang heeft Montreuil-sur-Mer grote schrijvers

Romanschrijvers, toneelschrijvers, auteurs van vandaag hebben het
talent om de kleine verhalen die leiden tot grote, zoals blijkt uit het werk

A commercial and religious crossroads in times past, Montreuilsur-Mer was home to many craftsmen and artists: illuminators,
gold- and silversmiths, ceramists, potters, weavers... who plied their
trades in stalls set up in the typical street of «Clape-en-Bas».
Fewer in number but just as talented, today’s artists work in glass,
paint, sculpt metal, breathe life into stringed instruments, take
photographs and tell the story of the Montreuillois region. They are
worthy of your attention and will be delighted to welcome you when
you visit.

Whether they work in clay, metal or glass, the artists of the Montreuillois
are skilled at modelling materials, transforming and sublimating them.
Beads of Murano glass, painstakingly spun with a glassmakers’ torch, rub
shoulders with monumental steel sculptures, finely engraved glass, raku
ceramics... Each work is unique and demonstrates an authentic know-how.
Of ze nu aarde, metaal of glas bewerken, de kunstenaars van Montreuillois
weten hoe ze het materiaal moeten boetseren, transformeren en
sublimeren. De glaskralen van Murano, zorgvuldig gesponnen met de
glasbrander, naast de monumentale sculpturen van staal, fijn geëtst glas,
raku keramiek... Elk werk is uniek en toont een echte know-how.
With its Italian style theatre, its superb townhouses, its Abbey
Church and its chapels, Montreuil-sur-Mer forms a beautiful
backdrop for all the operatic arts. Throughout the year, these
venues resonate to the sound of music for keynote events or
more intimate concerts. Bernieulles, in the Course Valley, is home
to a stringed instrument maker of national renown who makes
guitars, lutes and stringed instruments with extraordinary finesse.
Met zijn Italiaanse theater, sublieme herenhuizen, abdij en
kapellen, is Montreuil-sur-Mer een prachtige omgeving voor

artists breathe life into their stunningly realistic works.
Meet them in their studios on the Rue du Clape-en-Bas or at the Animal Art
Fair at the end of May.

rediscover the events that forged the identity of our territory.
2014 will see the start of celebrations for the centenary of the
First World War, and the Montreuillois region will not be outdone.
In March, a major exhibition will open in the casemates of the
Citadel, the starting point of a wider commemorative project
running until 2016. The programme is still in the planning but it
promises to be rich, exciting and moving.

In Montreuillois is de passie voor geschiedenis als een
tweede natuurlijke aard! Spektakels, tentoonstellingen,
heruitvoeringen... nodigen u uit om de gebeurtenissen die de
identiteit van ons land hebben gevormd te (her)ontdekken.
In 2014 zullen de vieringen van de honderdste verjaardag
van de Eerste Wereldoorlog van start gaan, en Montreuillois
zal niet worden overtroffen. Vanaf maart zal er een grote
tentoonstelling plaatsvinden in de kazematten van de Citadel,
het startpunt van een nog groter herdenkingsproject in 2016.
De programmering zit nog in de ontwerpfase, maar belooft
gevuld, spannend, en ontroerend te worden.

History does not tell whether Victor Hugo stayed here. But he lends his name to a
traditional brasserie where everything is home-made. From breakfast to evening meal,
in high season service is non-stop seven days a week. The terrace is ideally located for a
view of the Abbey-Church and the Chapel of Saint Nicolas.

You need a base, so why not here? Well-appointed chalets (2 to 6 people) are laid out
around a lake in the heart of a 6-hectare park. This peaceful campsite is close to the Somme
and Authie Bays, just 5km from the beach and 10km from Montreuil and its valleys.
Entertainment for all: fishing, games, tennis courts, 2 heated swimming pools (1 indoor),
spa, sauna, Wifi, bar and organised activities in the summer.
