this year’s Sävsjö Guide. It contains most of what you need to know to
explore our surroundings. More information is available from our tourist
information offices, on our website upplevelseriket.se and from our tourism
companies.
The water and beautiful flowering surroundings are my picture of our
municipality. And the short distances to most things means that whether you
are in the countryside or in one of our built-up areas, you can swim, walk in
nature or just experience the security and sense of community. We also have
an idyllic town centre where you can shop and enjoy our flowering parks.
Nature and silence are two of the factors that attract many to visit the
Municipality of Sävsjö, and I hope you will be one of the many who return
from year to year and continue to discover the best of what is on offer.

How does one describe the
Good Life in Sävsjö?
One way is to describe the fresh air, fantastic nature, 179 lakes and waterways, the idyll of a small town with closeness to most of what you may need.
Not to forget the living countryside. Another way is to describe the beautiful
surroundings by the Eksjöhofgård area In Sävsjö, where the 17th century
castle ruin is the undisputed focal point in the lake.
Sävsjö town centre is an idyllic area with personal shops and restful
plantations. Kulturhuset is the hub of the towns’ cultural and entertainment
activities. A short distance away is Ljunga Park which used to be a sanatorium
at the turn of the last century for sufferers of lung disease, today it is a hotel
and restaurant.
Between Kulturhuset and Ljunga Park is the Lagoon where people gather in
the summer to take part in guided flower tours in the many plantations which
are called Sävsjö’s Garden.
Vrigstad one of the municipalities larger community has a history as a mediaeval trading post and even today traders gather to market twice a year.
As well as Sävsjö the communities Stockaryd & Rörvik became established
in connection with the railway being built through this area.

The railway created

On 1st of October 1864 the first passenger train made a stop by the
newly built stationhouse in Sävsjö. There were no other buildings in the
adjacent area yet because the station was placed outside the surrounding
villages.
The locality of the station was strategically placed because the main road
went through Vetlanda and Vrigstad-Jönköping. Also the Västra Härad Courthouse was only a few kilometres away in Komstad. The community grew
quickly and in 1886 Sävsjö became a municipality. After active lobbying
Sävsjö received official town status 1st of January 1947.
Despite Sävsjö being a fairly recent community it is situated in an environment where historical finds show that people have resided here for a
long time.
Here are ancient remains, grave fields and no less than five unique
churches dating from the 12th century.

Activities
Sävsjö can be experienced in many ways, on foot, by car, by motorcycle

Sävsjös unique tourist fishing licence. At a price of only 300 SEK you will be
able to test your fishing luck for a week in 12 fishing areas in a total of 36
lakes. The fishing license is only valid for fishing rods, it is not allowed for
use for crayfish catching. Fishing is free for youths up to the age of 15.

The Churches of Njudung
Churches from mediaeval times to the present
In Sävsjö Council there are five well preserved mediaeval churches that are
still in use for services, christenings, marriages and guided tours. Together
with four similar churches in the neighbouring Vetlanda Council they make
a unique cultural treasure which is called The Churches of Njudung.
They are all built in stone in romantic style. Characteristic features of most
of them are longhouse, chancel and a semi-circular apse. Inside the churches there are unique paintings and inventories from different periods. All
of the churches are situated in an old cultural heritage area with beautiful
surroundings.

From Komstad to The Bronx
– a fantastic story.
There is a fantastic story which begin in Komstad outside Sävsjö. It tells the story
of Jonas Jonasson Brunck who, maybe because of unsettling times in Småland in
the 1600’s, went out in the world and there met the Dutch girl Teunti Joriaens.
They married and in 1639 emigrated to America. Shortly after arriving, Brunck
bought a piece of land probably from the native Indians. The size of the piece
of land consisted of 264 hectares and was situated east of what today is the
north part of Manhattan in New York. Brunck let the land out as leaseholdings for
growing maize and tobacco and he became an important figure in the town of
New Amsterdam. Time in the new country however became short. After close to
four years Jonas Brunck died. Judging by the estate inventory it shows he was a
wealthy man. The inventory lists his library, weapons, clothes, household utensils,
tools, cattle, buildings and grains stocks.
Teuntie soon remarried and after a while she sold the estate. Jonas Brunck’s
name lived on, through the river which divided his land called Brunck’s river,
commonly pronounced Bronck’s River, The Bronx.
In 1664 the English overtook the town New Amsterdam and renamed it New
York. At the end of the 1800’s New York established a system of city boroughs
and annexed the land that Jonas Brunck once owned. On the maps the name of
the river stated Brunck’s River and this was how the borough The Bronx came into
being.
Jonas Brunck was one of the first, after the native indians, who saw the potential in the land. In literature describing the early history of the area he is noted as
an important European settler.

From castle to rune stones
The thought that people have lived in our countryside for thousands of
years is staggering. The remnants and the messages they have left behind gets
ones imagination going.
Sävsjö Council is rich in ancient remains. Tridents, grave fields and rune stones
are spread all through the Council. Many of these remains are within cycling
distance and others are close to the main roads. The most well-known historical remnant in the Council is Eksjöhofgårds castle ruin which is situated at a
rest area adjacent to road 127. The ruin, which also is the official crest of the
Council, is easy to spot and there is an information sign which tells its history.

To go shopping in the many shops in the area is something else than just
rushing around to find the lowest prices. It is about taking an enjoyable
stroll on paved streets surrounded by floral splendour.
Here you are met by small, unique and well-stocked stores with personal
