Scope of the Review
 Incorporate comments and feedback on Version 4 from
practitioners
 Align PMBOK with:
 PMI Lexicon
 Other PMI Standards – Scheduling, Risk, Agile, PgMP. etc
 ISO 21500
 Consider project management role delineation study
results
 Reposition Chapter 3 (The Standard for Project
Management) as a standalone, ANSI approved standard
(Appendix) within the Fifth Edition

Major Changes
 Business Rules established for Inputs, Tools &
Techniques and Outputs (ITTO)
 Project Management plan is input for all processes that produce a
subsidiary plan as output, eg. Scope Management Plan
 Documents specifically named when created as a primary output,
eg. Scope Management Plan; captured as part of “Project
Documents Updates” subsequently
 Precedence rules established for input and output lists – plans,
subsidiary plans, baselines, data/reports, updates, enterprise
environmental factors, organizational process assets

Major Changes
 For consistency and clarity, four new Planning Processes
were added to create subsidiary plans that are part of the
overall project management plan


Major Changes
 For consistency and clarity, the monitor and controlling
processes were named using the form “Control {XXX}”,
since controlling includes monitoring – eg. Monitor and
Control Risks changed to Control Risks
 Chapter 3 was downsized to introduce the project
management processes and Process Groups but not list
each individual process; most of this content was moved
to an Appendix as the ANSI standard

Major Changes
 Redefined terms to align with the DIKW (data,
information, knowledge, wisdom) model used in the field
of Knowledge Management
 Work Performance Data - The raw observations and
measurements identified during activities being performed to carry
out the project work – ex. percent of work completed, actual costs
 Work Performance Information - The performance data
collected from various controlling processes, analyzed in context
and integrated based on relationships across areas – ex. status of
deliverables and forecasted estimates to complete.
 Work Performance Reports - The physical or electronic
representation of work performance information compiled in
project documents, intended to generate decisions, actions, or
awareness – ex. status reports and updates
