Unit 1: Conversions • Decimals, fractions, and percents are all ways to express a part of a whole. • It is important to remember that all % are out of a total of 100. • Sometimes you need to convert between these to fit a certain situation. For example, when cooking you would use fractions. Changing Fractions to Decimals Change 3/4 to a decimal. There are two ways to do this. • You can make a fraction equivalent to x/10 , x/100 , x/ 1,000 IF you know this easily in your head. • You can divide the numerator by the denominator. Change each fraction to a decimal. 1. 13/ 2. 19/ 3. 1 5/8 4. 4/ 5. 1/ 20 25 9 6 Changing Decimals to Fractions “WRITE IT LIKE YOU SAY IT!!!” Write 0.95 as a fraction. 1. Write it as a fraction like you say it. • Ex: ninety-five hundredths = 2. Reduce if necessary. Change each decimal to a fraction. 1. 0.9 2. 0.09 3. 4.5 4. 7.75 5. 5.25 Changing Decimals to Percents Ex: Change 0.23 to a percent. 1. Move the decimal point two places to the right. 2. Put the percent sign (%) on the right side of the number. Change each decimal to a percent. 1. 0.25 2. 0.095 3. 0.6 4. 0.05 5. 5.25 Changing Percents to Decimals Ex: Change 75% to a decimal. 1. Move the decimal point two places to the left. 2. Drop the percent sign (%). Change each percent to a decimal. 1. 76% 2. 90% 3. 6% 4. 125% 5. 100% Changing Percents to Fractions Ex: Change 5% to a fraction. 1. Change the percent to a decimal. 5% = 2. Change the decimal to a fraction and simplify. 0.05= = Change each percent to a fraction. 1. 12% 2. 2% 3. 58% 4. 43% 5. 65% Changing Fractions to Percents Ex: Change 3/10 to a percent. 1. Change the fraction to a decimal. 3/ 10 = 2. Change the decimal to a percent. 0.3 = % Change each fraction to a percent. 1. 43/ 2. 7/ 3. 3/ 4. 1/ 4 5. 1/ 2 100 10 5 No work shown. Fraction 1/ 50 5 1/ 5 Decimal 0.5 Percent Comparing Fractions, Decimals, and Percents • i.e.: ¾ _____ 50% <, >, or = • 1.) Convert to same form • 2.) Compare the two: greater than, less than, or equal Practice: • Compare: 3/5 _____ 60% • Compare: ¾ _____ 0.77 • Compare: 0.56 ______ 49% Ordering and Comparing Fractions, Decimals, and Percents • Example: Order the following from Least to Greatest: ¼ 0.8 50% (put in percent form) • 1) Convert all to common form • 2.) Order in original form • • • • ¼ = 0.25 = 25% 0.8 = 80% 50% = 50% ANSWER ¼, 50%, 0.8 Practice: • Order from Least to Greatest (in decimal form) 2/5 0.6 55% • Order from Least to Greatest (in fraction form) ¼ .7 40% More Practice • Order each set from least to greatest. Show ALL conversions. • 0.66, 2/3 , 60% • 0.31, 28%, 7/20 • 76%, 7/8 , 0.8 • Order from greatest to least. Show ALL conversions. • 2 1/2, 2.4, 212% • 5 3/8, 5.5, 560% • 6 14/25, 640%, 6.5 Finding a Pattern • You may also be given the beginning of a pattern and have to fill in the rest of it. • F, D, F, D, ____, ____, _____, ______ • Whatever the pattern, you have to change what they give you to be in the same form so you can see what the pattern is. • But, you have to make sure you fill in the pattern in the correct form. • Must convert TWICE! Example: • 1/5, 0.4, 6/10, _____, ____, _____ •F D F D F D Label them! Practice • For each pattern, find the next four numbers in the sequence.
