Sometimes when numbers are very large or very small it can be difficult to keep track of the place value.

• Therefore, we use SCIENTIFIC NOTATION

• Let’s practice writing the distances from the planet to the Sun in scientific notation!

I will do the first planet: Mercury

In scientific notation this would be:

5.8 x 10 7

How did I do that? Can you come up with a rule for writing numbers in scientific notation?

To write a number in scientific notation:

• 1. Count the number of spaces to move the decimal so that there is one number in front of it.
