By: Colton, Lyric, Jaime Scientific notation is a style of writing numbers that are from large or too small to be expressed by decimal notation. In scientific notation the decimal place is moved until only one number appears on the left side of the decimal. This is very important in science, it is used in finding how far it is to the moon and the sun and all the other planets. JOBS: Jobs like NASA engineering, pharmaceuticals, or a job that measures something very large or small such as a biologist or things in the medical industry, or an astronomer use scientific notation to make the very large numbers or the very small numbers easier to use and easier to understand History: Archimedes is who invented the use of scientific notation and power of ten counting so the Greek alphabet system would no longer be in the counting system. We can use scientific notation in space by seeing how far the earth is from the sun or the distance from Pluto to the sun. 1. The distance from the earth to the sun is 92,960,000 miles. In scientific notation it is 9.296*107 2. The distance from Pluto to the sun is 3.67 billion miles. In scientific notation is 3.67*109 If you do not see a decimal point in a number, it is understood to be at the end of the number. Standard form- refers to the usual way that numbers are written- not in scientific notation. Rules: Any number raised to the power of zero is one Any number raised to the power of one is equal to itself Any number raised to the x power is equal to the product of the number used as a factor x times The number 2.23 is called the coefficient. It must be greater than or equal to 1 and or less than 10. The second number is called the base . It must always be 10 in scientific notation. The base number 10 is always written in exponent form. In the number 2.23 x 1012 the number 12 is referred to as the exponent or power of ten 2.23 x 1012 = 2.230000000000 = 2,230,000,000,000 1. 3.6 × 1012 2. 4.2 × 10-7 3.6 × 1012 =3,600,000,000,000 Why it is that is because when you are to the 12 power than you move the decimal 12 places to the right, than you fill the places with 0’s. Examples 4.2 × 10-7 = 0.000 000 42 Why it is like this is because the negative makes the decimal moves 7 spots to the left. Than after that you fill the spots with zeros. Questions 1. 2. 3.298 x 104 = 3.2980 =32,980 6.112 x 10-3 = 0006.112 =0.006112 1. What is the difference of the milky way to our solar system radius, the distance from Pluto to the sun is 5.9*1012 meters and the milky way radius is 3.9*1020 round the coefficient to the nearest tenth 6.6 x 107 meters 2. The speed of light is 3*108 meteres/second. If the sun is 1.5*1011 meters from the earth, how many seconds does it take light to reach the earth. 3 x 108 meters The approximate volume of the visible universe (A sphere with a radius of about 14 billion light years) is 1.1 x 1031 cubic light-years. If a light-year equals 9.2 x 1017 centimeters, how many cubic centimeters does the visible universe occupy? Answer: 1 cubic light year = (9.2 x1017)3 = 7.8 x 1053 cubic centimeters, so the universe contains 7.8 x 1053 x 1.1 x 1031= 8.6 x 1084 cubic centimeters. Question a) (5 × 10 2)(7 × 10 5) d) (-7.2 × 10 -6)(0.00039) Answer: a) (5 × 10 2)(7 × 10 5) = (5 × 7)(10 2 × 10 5) = 35 × 10 7 = 3.5 × 10 8 d) (- 7.2 × 10 -6)(0.00039) = (- 7.2 × 10 -6)(3.9 × 10 -4) = (- 7.2 × 3.9)(10 -6 × 10 -4) = - 28.08 × 10 -10 = - 2.808 × 10 -9 http://www.regentsprep.org/Regents/math/AL GEBRA/AO2/page5a.htm 1. 3.34 x 1010 2. 2.22 x 107 3. 3.3 x 10-5 4. 3.5 x 10-2 http://www.kylesconverter.com/blog/scientif ic-notation-introduction/ http://www.purplemath.com/modules/expo nent3.htm http://www.nyu.edu/pages/mathmol/textbo ok/scinot.html
