It is given by mf , where f c fm 1 0.5 0 -0.5 -1 0 0.5 1 1.5 2 2.5 3 3.5 4 0 0.5 1 1.5 2 2.5 3 3.5 4 1 0.5 0 -0.5 -1 2 1 0 13 TLTP/AVi Luku -12 -2 0 Maalis 2013 0.5 1 1.5 2 2.5 3 3.5 4 FM Frequency Analysis Analysis of the frequency components and their respective amplitude in the FM wave requires use of a complex mathematical integral known as the Bessel function of the first kind of the n-th order. Actually, Bessel function generates an infinite sideband of a FM signal, which can be represented as eFM Ac J 0 (m f ) sin c t Ac J1 (m f )sin(c m )t sin(c m )t Ac J 2 (m f )sin(c 2m )t sin(c 2m )t Ac J 3 (m f )sin(c 3m )t sin(c 3m )t Ac J 4 (m f )sin(c 4m )t sin(c 4m )t ... where eFM instantaneous amplitudeof themodulatedFM wave A c the peak amplitudeof thecarrier J n solutionof thenth order Bessel functionfor a modulationindex m f 14 TLTP/AVi Luku 2 m f FM modulationindex Maalis 2013 FM Frequency Analysis So, actually the FM wave contains an infinite number of sidebands. Each set of upper and lower sideband is displaced from the carrier frequency by an integer multipal of the modulation frequency: n × fm, where n=1,2,3,… . From the Bessel functions, we can get some conclusions: As the modulation index increases from zero, the spectral energy shifts from the carrier frequency to an increasing number of significant sidebands. It means the wider bandwidth is required to carrier the FM signal. The magnitudes of the sideband amplitudes J decrease in value with increasing order n. 15 TLTP/AVi Luku 2 Maalis 2013 Bessel Table Bessel Function needs complex differentials and integrals, usually a table is used by the engineers.
