Probability Independent Study Instructor: Dianne Phillips By: Jason Mitchell What you will learn today. • What probability is and how its used • Predict probability using fractions • Draw conclusions What is probability? • Probability is defined as a measure of how likely it is that some event will occur. Example question: If you have 4 red balls, 5 green balls and 1 blue ball in a bag; how likely would it be to grab a green ball out of the bag? How to answer: Take the number of green balls over the total number of all the balls. There is 5 green balls and 10 balls in total. Answer: 5/10 = 50% chance! We have a big bag of Starbursts. Contents of the bag • 35 Red • 17 Yellow • 26 Orange • 22 Pink Use these numbers to answer the following questions. What is the probability of pulling out a yellow Starburst? Example question: If you flick the spin wheel, what is the probability of the spinner landing on Purple OR Red? In this question you have to take notice to the “or” at the end. When you see “or” you have to add the two in the answer. Answer: There is 1 Red spot and 1 Purple spot so the answer would be… 2/6 (6 comes from the total number of colors on the wheel) What is the probability of landing on Yellow or Green?
