Mean absolute deviation notes

How can you describe how far apart the
responses are from the center in a data set?
In this lesson you will learn how to
describe the distribution of data by
using the mean absolute deviation.

Let’s Review
The mean of a set of data is the average.

0 + 0 + 0 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 5 = 24
24 ÷ 12 = 2
Let’s Review
Absolute value is the distance any number is
from 0.

Variability:
Describes how the spread out or closely
clustered the data set is.
There are 3 ways to determine the spread:
1.Range
2.Interquartile Range
3.Mean Absolute Deviation
A Common Mistake
The mean and mean absolute deviation are often
confused because they both include the word,
“mean.”

Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD):
MAD- is the average distance between each
data value and the mean.

two populations
by using the mean absolute
deviation (MAD).

Comparison
The mean absolute deviation for
the NFC is greater than the mean
absolute deviation for the AFC.
That means the data for penalties
for the AFC are closer together.
The NFC has a farther spread.
