Essential Objectives
Target
LiveCity aims to empower citizens of a city to
interact with each other in a more productive,
efficient & socially useful way, by using high
quality v2v over the Internet.
LiveCity is a pure technology integration trial,
aiming to offer advanced services to over 2,750
users in 5 European Cities, via the
implementation of selected pilot actions.
LiveCity envisages that the Future Internet will
include a Right of Way for a user’s traffic without
interference from unwanted traffic; it combines
network infrastructure(s) with a beta version of
the Virtual Path Slice (VPS) controller and
existing off-the-shelf video components.
Create a city-based Living Lab with an associated ecosystem.
Implement public service use cases, by engaging users at the
outset and by putting local organizations in driving roles.
Pilot innovative v2v services and/or related applications and
conduct user-centric evaluation experiments.
Collect KPIs from embedded users and evaluate services in
conjunction with key stakeholders and public service operators.
Disseminate results to public service network operators and city
authorities in Europe, inter-alia.
Help accelerate live interactive high definition v2v mass market
take-up across Europe by several potential means, also
including possibilities for establishing private-public partnerships.

Right of Way
Video-to-Video
 Establishment of a “Living-Lab”-like Infrastructure for the
implementation of selected pilots with diverse user
communities, by sharing common service platforms.
 Effort for a “common and interoperable solution” with the
aim of reducing cost and having high reachability.
 The LiveCity experimental network is a federation of existing
test-beds and networks, creating a Living-Lab Internet
Federation which supports a suitable Right of Way.
 LiveCity is a “user community” driven initiative. It embeds
city-based user communities which are in a “symbiotic”
relationship with the foundation technology.

Live City embeds city-based
user communities, being in
a “symbiotic” relationship
with the foundation
technology:
Dynamic Virtualised Path Slice to support video-to-video
Network features:
 Composition of a suitable infrastructure scheme,
by using a dedicated federation of networks.
 Backbone connectivity will use a mixture of
interconnection methods with a “hub” in the city
of Frankfurt, creating a “real market”-oriented
figure.
 Integration of an existing VPS controller and a
number of components (i.e.: video devices and
applications).
 Four network types are planned to be used to
access network users: xDSL, WiMAX, HSPA, LTE.
 LiveCity builds a network using ultrafast wireless
and wireline technologies.

LiveCity (Planned) Pilot Actions
Pilot service where an ambulance uplinks a live video to the hospital, so that the emergency doctor
can improve the treatment outcome for the patient in the crucial “golden hour” (WP2).
Use of video-to-video between a patient and a hospital support group (patient tele-monitoring),
enabling medical personnel to deliver enhanced support at lower cost and higher utility (WP2).
V2v services to reduce citizens’ travels to the City Hall that are necessary to realize several
administrative processes; this also intends to decrease transport costs of citizens and reduce time
spent on administrative processes (WP3).
Enhancement of city experiences by using live interactive v2v communication, through a joint pilot
between two museums in Luxembourg (city) and in Athens. The interested group will have the
opportunity to be virtually present at the cultural institute/museum and enjoy a real time guided
tour through some permanent collections or temporary exhibitions over video (WP4).
V2v for the enhancement of teaching facilities and the support of learning experiences, in involved
connected schools (WP4).
The LiveCity v2v platform aims to provide the following features:
(i) End-to-end video streaming; (ii) content infrastructure; (iii) multiple
user interface support, and; (iv) interface with the VPS controller.
Further Expectations
Identification of channels and/or other diverse means for a potential
interaction with related innovative and extended ecosystems, such as
Living Labs.
Definition and exploitation of potential “synergies” at various levels.
Validation of pilot actions and of expected trials.
Evaluation - assessment of proposed methodologies and of expected
trials’ results.
Exchanging of experiences, of best practices and/or of derived tools.
Promotion of European concepts in the video community.
Dissemination of results-findings-experiences.
Examining opportunities for real market implementation and
effective exploitation (at EU-level).
