Developing a manual for the management of weeds on roadsides Michaela Heinson 28 August 2014 DEVELOPING A MANUAL FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF WEEDS ON ROADSIDES • • • • The manual will clarify roles and responsibilities for managing roadside weeds in South Australia A working group has been established to guide the project. Members are representatives from state agencies and local government. Adam Gray, Director – Environment, LGA is on the working group. The project is being led by Biosecurity SA. DEVELOPING A MANUAL FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF WEEDS ON ROADSIDES Contents will include: • coordination amongst stakeholders • vehicle hygiene to reduce the spread of weeds • current issues, including herbicide resistance, fire management and biodiversity conservation • information on the relevant legislation • case studies DEVELOPING A MANUAL FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF WEEDS ON ROADSIDES Examples of topics to be included in the manual: • controlling non-declared weeds and ‘declared weeds’ under the Natural Resources Management Act 2014 • who is responsible for which sections of roadside • understanding the impacts of weeds • making appropriate choices for weed control works • off-target damage from weed control activities DEVELOPING A MANUAL FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF WEEDS ON ROADSIDES Examples of topics to be included in the manual: • herbicide resistance • reporting new weeds • how weed management activities are prioritised DEVELOPING A MANUAL FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF WEEDS ON ROADSIDES Natural Resources Management Act 2004 Weeds are declared under the NRM Act if they pose a weed risk to primary industries, natural environments and/or public health and safety, and legal status can help to limit their establishment and spread.
