Where are coral reefs found?
Coral Reefs can be found where the red dots are located in the world map. Here is a picture of a coral
reef:

3 Animals that live there…
•
Fish such as clown fish live amongst or in close relation to coral
reefs because they form difficult ecosystems with huge biodiversity.
•
Small animals such as snails and crabs adapt to coral reefs because
they can get food there and they can camouflage very well.
•
Some sharks and rays also live near coral reefs because their pray
does too. They are called cartilaginous fish.

3 Plants that live there…
• Marine Algae is located where coral reefs are. It
grows in the form of microalgae and helps coral
reefs grow.
• Sea grass grows in protected waters and lagoons. It
can form critical nursery grounds for reef fish.
• Mangroves live in coral reef. They have the capacity
to significantly improve loads of fish and marine life.

Minerals found in coral reefs
•
•
•
•
Calcium is found in mussels
that live in coral reefs.
•
Here are a list of other
minerals:
•
Gabbro
Mercury is found in coral
reefs. It can damage your
bones and your brain.
•
Basalt
•
Serpentine

What oil is found in coral
reefs?
• In coral reefs, there is oil that is not supposed to be
there. It is from pollution above and under water,
from oil spills and ship pollution.

How has science helped?
• Science helped discover coral reefs because science
helped invent snorkels, air tanks, boats, scuba diving
equipment and other kinds of equipments.
•
I got that information from what I know!
How has science helped?
• Science also helped discover things to store the
corals in and people experimented on corals to see
what they are made of and even what the are in
general. Without science, people won’t know so
much about underwater and other things.
•
I got that information from what I know!
What have people done to
coral reefs?
• Coral reef are beautiful! However they are very
fragile. People want coral reefs because of their
beautiful colours and things but it is very mean,
selfish, rude and inconsiderate to take them because
then the beauty of them will be gone and there won’t
be that much left in the world.
•
I got that information from what I know!
What have people done to
coral reefs?
• Tourists will also not go there as much because there
is nothing much to see except for broken and dead
coral reefs.
•
I got that information from what I know!
How has natural resources
effected economics (money)?
• When people destroy coral reefs, then less tourists
come. That means less money and less coral reefs.
However, in some places in the world, like in Egypt,
there are such beautiful coral reefs but people will
destroy them sooner or later. Then people will hire
boats and submarines etc. to investigate the coral
reefs and find out more about the underwater world!
•
I got that information from what I know!
How does it affect the
environment?
• People spend a lot of money on cars, boats,
airplanes and other things that pollute the
environment so badly, it spreads through the ocean
and affects marine life (like coral reefs). When
people visit coral reefs, they pollute the area that
they visited. The boat engine released fuel and oil
which then stays on the coral reefs.
