Reclaimed teak wood Old wood-New life d-Bodhi Europe by DTP • O c O ti o n W T E a k Reclaimed Teak Wood D ‘Old Wood – New Life’ le l c o Our story begins with a tree. The durable Tectona grandis tree from East Java to be exact. The tree is felled and the timber brought to a mill where it’s sawn into beams and planks for use in homes. Years pass. The wood weathers and falls into disuse. In the past this wood would have been left to decay. At d-Bodhi, we see things differently. We see the potential of this beautifully seasoned wood and have a dedicated team of suppliers who bring us old teak wood to use as our raw material. Wood that once supported the sturdy structure of a home is now worn out, filled with nails, cracks, holes, and chipped paint. Most people would say we might as well burn it. But they don’t see the beauty hidden inside. Our skilled craftspeople carefully remove nails and hinges, seeing beyond the weathered surface to a richer heart within. Under their masterful hands, the wood comes alive again in individually created furnishings that will last for years. Touching the small nail holes, cracks or old joints recalls stories of the wood’s exotic, tropical past. After fashioning the main furniture pieces, we ended up with piles of leftover wood. In our commitment to creating a truly environmentally sound company, we searched for innovative ways to use all this recycled wood … from small off-cut pieces down to some of the sawdust! With the fnger joint technique, small scrap pieces, others would simply throw away, are transformed into solid wood laminated panels used in cabinets, tables and flooring. Even smaller pieces turn into mosaic side panels and doors. Some of the sawdust is mixed with resin for unusual lamps and handicrafts. d-Bodhi furniture is truly one-of-a-kind. No large machines are used to craft our collections. Only skilled hands using the ancient knowledge of traditional techniques and the simplest of tools. Reclaimed teak wood Woodhunter d-Bodhi Europe by DTP • O ‘Wood Hunter’ c O ti o n W T E a k Reclaimed Teak Wood D le l c o Most of the reclaimed wood comes from support beams and outer panels of old houses in remote villages. Local teams are on the ground and when someone wants to sell their house, they contact us. Extended farming families in tiny rural hamlets tucked into the hills of East Java still build beautifully simple knock-down wooden houses made of plentiful teak that grows all around that area. To assure we buy the best quality wood at a fair price and process for everyone, we go directly to meet the families once the basic negotiation is finalized. There’s a strong traditional belief or local customary law that says a house shouldn’t be passed down more than three generations. When it’s time, the house is sold and fresh wood is bought to begin again. After a last quality check the wood gets sorted. The heavy support beams are especially suitable for collections such as Fissure and Fendy, while the outer panels are used for the Kasting, The Look and Taste Collection. The smallest pieces of (left over) wood can be found in the the mosaic patterns of the Carbon Collection.
