We are glad to keep up with the 4th
of July tradition by organizing the
Independence Day Celebration for the
Community. The J4Milan event varies
from year to year – from a family style
picnic in the garden of La Triennale, to
the town fair like celebration hosted at
the Provincia’s exquisite XV century
Palazzo Isimbardi. Regardless of
the format, every J4Milan has many
recurrent elements with lots of redwhite-and-blue and a cheerful crowd
of Americans.
This year, the event takes the form
of an aperitivo-style/late night party
at the Fiat Open Lounge. It will be a
moment for Americans in Milan to
get together with fellow Americans,
but also the opportunity to celebrate
and share American traditions with
our Italian and international friends.
J4Milan, endorsed by the United
States Consulate General in Milan and
the American Chamber of Commerce
in Italy is open to the public. We hope

Our founding fathers also celebrated
their great achievement, albeit in a rather different way. John Adams
and his wife Abigail, for example, marked the special occasion in
1776 with a meal of turtle soup. Now turtle soup may seem like a
questionable choice to our modern palates, but that dish was highly
popular at the time of our country’s founding and as American as an
apple pie at today’s July 4th celebration.

changed
dramatically over the years
-- thanks to advances in
science, agriculture, and
the arrival of immigrants
from all over the world -our cuisine, like American
culture itself, continues to
evolve.

In addition to its cuisine, I
believe the United States
has a larger story to tell
about food. Milan Expo
2015’s focus is “Feed the
Planet, Energy for Life,”
and that’s why this July
4th we’ll be celebrating the
USA Pavilion at Independence Day receptions through Italy, from the
embassy in Rome to the consulates in Naples, Florence and Milan.
We’re proud to bring the American spirit of optimism, energy, and
innovation to bear on a crucially important question: How will the
world meet the global challenge of feeding more than 9 billion people
by 2050?
We think we have some important answers to share, and we look
forward to celebrating a USA Pavilion that will showcase American
leadership in the global food arena, underscore America’s role in
advancing food security and sustainability through science and
technology, and provide a fun, engaging, and delicious experience to
over 20 million visitors.
I’d like to think our founding fathers would be proud that the country
they declared and fought for has developed into a global leader
-- for the political system they created, but also for a culture that
has developed in the United States that encourages free thought,
investment in the future, and the creation of innovative solutions for
sustaining future generations.
Writing this message is bittersweet, for my assignment to Milan ends
this summer and I must return home. It has been a joy and a privilege
to have worked alongside so many talented Italians and Americans
and to have witnessed the vitality of our partnerships.
I hope you will celebrate July 4th this year. Don’t forget that our friends
at Easy Milano are throwing their annual bash on Friday evening at
the Fiat Open Lounge, and I hope that all of you will join in celebrating
America’s 238th birthday. No turtle soup, I promise.
