“American Food 2.0”, the USA Pavilion
at Milan Expo 2015, aims at fostering
awareness
and
enthusiasm
for
American cuisine in all its aspects,
and to confront many of the negative
stereotypes that prevail here in Europe.
The most important trends in American
cuisine aim at sustainability, innovation,
entrepreneurship and healthful and
delicious dishes. Ours is a nation of
immigrants, with each group contributing
to the culinary diversity of America. This
intermingling of cultures has led to a
fusion of tastes and ingredients that
knows no equal in the world. It is this
diversity that we hope to make a focus at the USA Pavilion. American food
reflects the diversity of our peoples – ethnic, social, economic and regional.
It also is a product of biodiversity on a continental scale, encompassing vast
geography and microclimates, from mountains to plains, coastlines to tropical
zones to snow-belts. All this is reflected in the food we eat, the fruits and
vegetables we put on our tables, and supplemented by the ingredients we
include from around the world to satisfy a multitude of tastes.

The theme of Expo is “Feeding the Planet,” and the USA Pavilion will put front
and center the U.S. role in achieving that end. American farmers produce one
fourth of the world’s food, but to supply the planet’s growing population, we need
to increase global food production by 70% before 2050. Thanks to technology,
innovation, and entrepreneurship,
America now produces more
food -- more consistently and
more safely -- and gets it to more
people at a more affordable price
than ever before in history. The
most pressing food issues have a
local impact, but they are global in
nature, and can only be solved at
the global level. This will happen
through negotiations, diplomacy,
and trade, but it will also happen
through social movements and
humanitarian initiatives.
American

The situation of the United States’ pavilion is unique, I believe, among all the
countries that hope to be present at Expo. This is because American legislation
specifically prohibits spending public money for an American pavilion. We
therefore use a model that we call a “public-private partnership” to manage
American participation at world expositions. And frankly, I am proud of this
distinctively American approach, because the United States is proud of the
ingenuity and energy of its private sector.
Although there are over 900 American businesses with operations in Italy,
I would underscore that our pavilion in Milan is not just about the Italian
market. Rather, it is an opportunity for American companies with interests
across Europe and around the globe to showcase the products, services,
technologies and innovations that have made them a global economic leader.
Support for the USA Pavilion offers companies an opportunity to expand their
global visibility, make connections to consumers and markets, and also offers
special showcase events in the evenings or on special days for companies to
entertain invited guests or otherwise advance their media and marketing strategies
before a global audience in the heart of Europe, our largest commercial partner.
The economic and commercial partnership between the United States and
Italy is vibrant. The US market is the third largest export market for Italy, and
Italian exports to the US are growing year on year quite robustly. More and
more Italian companies are looking to partner with American companies or to
invest directly in the US market. We hope that EXPO will offer an opportunity for
Italian and American companies to deepen their ties, make new connections,
and develop new business relations that can go forward beyond the end of
October 2015.

day
that
passes the
Universal
Exhibition
that
has
s h a p e d
cities
and
produced
some of the
most iconic landmarks on the globe,
the Eiffel Tower to mention just one,
is coming closer to home. Just like
for the Olympics and the World Cup,
Expo will be a moment of national
pride. Americans living in Milan,
probably more so than the tourists,
will without a doubt feel a natural
connection to the USA Pavilion. With
this in mind, Easy Milano has made
a commitment to show its support of
the USA Pavilion during Expo 2015.
Throughout the Expo there will be
many opportunities for American
expats to become involved and to
participate in the many initiatives
and events that will be taking place.
Over the next few months, we are
going to present some proposals
to the “Friends of USA Pavilion”
represented here in Milan by the
American Chamber of Commerce
in Italy and we would be happy to

Dear Easy Milano Readers,
It is a great time of year to be HM Consul
General here in Milan. Our Majesty’s
Birthday once more approaches and of
course you know I would never comment
on which birthday it is. I will simply say that
it is great to share it with you all. As usual,
Her Majesty will follow Trooping the Colour,
the spectacular Birthday Parade which
will fascinate with its impressive display
of pageantry the crowds moving along
Buckingham Palace, The Mall and Horse
Guards’ Parade. I am sure many of you,
readers of Easy Milano, will join us and toast
Her Majesty for her birthday.
I am delighted to celebrate this
occasion this year as only recently I
was privileged to hear HRH Prince
Charles talk to all of the British
Ambassadors and Consul Generals
from around the world as we met in
London for our leadership conference.
Then straight after that, to have had
HRH Prince Harry visit Rome to
commemorate the 70th anniversary
of the battle of Monte Casino and to
also launch in Italy our winning design
for our Milan EXPO 2015 Pavilion. It’s
a Royal week or two for us here.

My wife, Barbara and I have met so many wonderful people in our time here
in this fantastic country and we have enjoyed every minute. In the time I have
been here I have seen Milan start to change, now it is absolutely clear Expo is
coming and the UK will certainly be there, we are very keen to help make it into
a huge success for Milan and Italy and are working hard to ensure our pavilion
is extraordinary, I hope you will be coming to see it, as you know Expo starts
next year in May and runs through to October.
Now we are likely to have a bit of a challenge coming up in the near future,
relations between England and Italy are going to be suddenly frosty for about
90 minutes as the two Nations relationships take a back seat and the referee
blows his whistle for the kick off in Brazil as our first game finds us matched
against each other. One thing I can predict, as soon as the final whistle blows
things will be back to normal and our great and enduring friendships will
continue.
Have our best wishes from both Barbara and I on our fourth summer here in
Milan.

Human beings were designed to
move, not sit on chairs all day, so
exercise is an essential part of
good body function plus it is the
shortest route to a feeling of wellbeing and an all over physical
glow. However many people’s
excuses include being too busy
and too stressed!
Virtually any form of exercise,
from aerobics to yoga can act as
a stress reliever. It will increase
your overall health and your
sense of well-being, which puts
more oomph in your step each
day plus it also has some direct
stress-busting benefits.
Unfortunately stress doesn’t
just mess with your head, it also
affects your waistline. When
you’re faced with a nerve racking
situation, your body increases
the production of the hormone
cortisol. When this hormone
is kept elevated for days it
encourages the body to store
additional abdominal fat.
What to do?
It’s a good idea to channel your
energy into proper exercise, such
as a brisk walk, run, bike ride
etc. Experts recommend that
we exercise for a minimum of 30
minutes at least 4 days a week.
This will not only improve your
health and reduce stress, it will
also relax your muscles, help you
sleep and release endorphins to
make you feel happy and relaxed.
All in all, fit people are better able
to handle the long-term effects of
stress without suffering ill-health.
