is within EDIT by designjunction,
one of the key British design events
which will take place for the 3rd time
in Milan during the International
Furniture Fair. With the patronage of
UKTI and the British Consulate-General, EDIT by designjunction will
welcome international visitors and press at Palazzo Morando, Milan’s
prestigious Museum of Costume, Fashion and Image, located in the
heart of the city’s fashion district, in Via Sant’Andrea, at 2 minutes’ walk
from the famous Via Montenapoleone.

Product design and interior design are strong sub-sectors of the
creative industries which, as Business Secretary Vince Cable said,
“collectively… already generate more than £36 billion a year for the
UK economy - £70,000 every minute - and employ 1.5 million people.
The growing appetite for British design offers many opportunities for
innovative firms of all sizes to boost their overseas trade and attract
new investment.”
Also UK furniture and furnishings manufacturing is a substantial
industry. It contributes £9.4 billion to the country’s GDP, which equates
to 1.7% of manufacturing output and employs 116,000 people within
8,180 companies. In addition to this, the industry employs 17,000 in
specialist furniture and furnishings retail and wholesale, and a high
percentage of the 42,000 registered specialist designers.

If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien, the rules for filing
income, estate, and gift tax returns and paying estimated tax

or abroad. Your worldwide income is subject to U.S. income

When to File
If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien residing overseas,
or are in the military on duty outside the U.S., on the regular

Taxpayer Identification Number
Each taxpayer who files, or is claimed as a dependent on,
a U.S. tax return will need a social security number (SSN)
or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN). To obtain
a SSN, use form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card.
To get form SS-5, or to find out if you are eligible for a social
security card, contact a Social Security Office or visit Social
Security International Operations. If you, or your spouse, are
not eligible for a SSN, you can obtain an ITIN by filing form
W-7 along with appropriate documentation.
Exchange Rates
You must express the amounts you report on your U.S. tax
return in U.S. dollars. If you receive all or part of your income
or pay some or all of your expenses in foreign currency,
you must translate the foreign currency into U.S. dollars.
Taxpayers generally use the yearly average exchange rate
to report foreign-earned income that was received regularly
throughout the year. However, if you had foreign transactions
on specific days, you may also use the exchange rates
for those days. Exchange rates can be found at Foreign
Currency and Currency Exchange Rates. Yearly average
currency exchange rates for most countries can be found at
Yearly Average Currency Exchange Rates.

Foreign Bank Account
Report (FBAR) Filing Deadline
The Foreign Bank Account Report (commonly called FBAR)
must be filed if you have assets in a foreign account and
the total value exceeds $10,000 at any time during the year.
The FBAR is an annual information form, filed separately
from your federal income tax return. The FBAR must now
be filed electronically and must be received by the Treasury
Department no later than June 30, 2014. No extension is
available and penalties for failing to file are steep. Please

ExpatCPA Tax Planning Tip
If your child takes a job this summer, you’ll want to know
about the following tax issues.
For 2014, your child can earn as much as $6,200 and not
pay a dime in federal income taxes. If your child’s earnings
won’t exceed this amount, consider having the child
claim “student - exempt” when completing the federal
withholding allowance certificate (Form W-4). If this is the
child’s only income and the total is below the $6,200 limit,
he or she then won’t have to file a 2014 tax return.
If the child makes a maximum deductible traditional IRA
contribution for 2013 and 2014 ($5,500 respectively), he
or she can earn as much as $11,700 without incurring any
federal income tax. If your child earns over $400 of selfemployment income, the filing requirements change.
There will still be withholding from your child’s paycheck for
social security and Medicare taxes. But those payments are
not income taxes, and they cannot be refunded to the child.
As long as you provide more than half of your child’s support,
you can continue to claim the child as an exemption on your

The fees for a UK passport for
British citizens applying from
overseas countries, including Italy,
will fall by 35% from next month.
James Brokenshire, Immigration and
Security Minister, has announced that
from 7th April the passport fee for
customers applying for a UK passport
from overseas will be reduced by £ 45
for adults and £ 28.50 for children.
The new fees are:
· Adult 32 page passport £ 83
· Child 32 page passport £ 53
· Jumbo 48 page passport £ 91
The 35% decrease in passport fees
is the result of efficiency savings
made over the last three years by
bringing back the processing and
issuing of overseas passports to
the UK.
British Consul for Italy Joyce
McDougall said:
“This is good news
for British citizens
applying for a UK
Passport from Italy.
The repatriation of overseas passport
centres means overseas applications
can now be handled more efficiently
and at significantly lower cost."
If you need a new or replacement
passport, go to the Overseas
British passport applications page
on www.GOV.UK where you can
make an overseas application. You
need to apply and pay online and
send your supporting documents
direct to the UK (no longer to the
nearest Consulate or Embassy). The
turnaround time is four to six weeks,
and applications are accepted up
to nine months before the expiry of
your current passport.
The new fees for overseas applications
remain marginally higher than
the equivalent fees for UK-based
applicants because on average
overseas applications take longer –
and therefore cost slightly more - to
process. This is because it is often less
straightforward to establish whether or
not an overseas applicant is entitled to a
UK passport. Overseas customers will
also continue to pay a courier charge in
addition to the passport fee.
The price of a passport reflects the
cost of processing and producing it.
Treasury rules prevent HM Passport
Office from making a profit or loss, and
the new fees from 7th April will ensure
that HM Passport Office continues to
cover its costs.
The 35% reduction for overseas
applications follows a decrease in
2012 of £5 – thanks to other cost
savings - for all applications made
within the UK.
