There are many books, cassettes and CDs; some can be borrowed from Birmingham Central
Library. This list includes recommended books and others you may come across, with
comments; it is not exhaustive. You can buy the Brasshouse Language Centre's
recommended course books at Reception or via the links given. Other books (and CDs) are
worth buying as supplementary material and for extra reading and listening practice. Buy
books published in the UK/USA online at <http://www.amazon.co.uk>. Books published
in Norway are available at Norli bookshop in Oslo with branches in other cities
<http://www.norli.no>. but they may be cheaper (even with the extra postage) from

number or title and author is quickest, or use key words like norsk, grammatikk,

best to monitor the standard rate (not tourist rate) at your bank's web site over a period of a
few weeks and order on a day when the rate is more favourable. Delivery to the UK is

Richard West-Soley: A very good course to supplement Brasshouse studies - all points
explained very clearly. Concise, but covers all major grammar points systematically - it's
quite fast-paced. CDs are also very well produced and great for extra listening practice.

exercises to re-inforce learning, building gradually to a vocabulary of the 800 most
frequently used Norwegian words. English-norsk/norsk-English glossaries, rules for
punctuation and capitalisation. The extensive pronunciation guide is good on exceptions
and includes stress, pitch and intonation for phrases and sentences. It clearly explains
much grammar that other books gloss over or omit entirely, including superlative endings
used with indefinite or definite nouns, past participle endings when used as adjectives,
preposition position in relative clauses, conditional forms and when to use the bli, være or
-s passive forms. A little dated but a very good supplement to other course books.

Most language learning books introduce language and grammar elements
gradually, so that verb tenses, for example, are distributed throughout the
book. This can make looking things up difficult as the different tenses for regular verbs,
irregular verbs and other exceptions are all in different places. This book is not a language
learning book (although you could use it that way); it is a reference in English for all
Norwegian grammar grouped logically, so that everything about adjectives, for example,
is together. The several sections on verbs occur one after the other for each tense, making
lookup very easy. There is a chapter on common errors and the appendices include lists of
common verbs, prefixes and suffixes. Highly rated by users; clearly laid out and
accessible; useful and excellent value for the beginner. I bought it as a beginner but have
now moved on to the Strandskogen book.

A very comprehensive reference book in English for all Norwegian grammar
with numerous examples of usage, including idioms and common errors. Highly rated by
users; well laid out; easy lookup; excellent for learners beyond the beginner stage. The
original was published in Norwegian by Gyldendal in 1983 and is still available - Norsk
grammatikk for utlendinger, ISBN: 9788205103245, kr274,- but the revised edition in
English is a better buy.

it uses old spellings, eg bog for bok, glæde for glede. Buy it only if you want the literature
passages or have an interest in the history of language development.
