Guidelines: For this activity, you will be working in a group of three to look
closely at an important passage from the text. The three of you will be
working on a text marking poster that you will then share with other
members of the class. Each person in your group must:
• Carefully read the quote (you can read it together)
• Contribute to all three sections of the poster.
• Be thorough and specific.
• Focus on the work of your group and avoid side-conversations and other
distracting off-task behavior.
• One person should not be doing all of the writing!
• You will receive a class work grade for the completion and quality of your
work (6 points) as well as a citizenship grade based on your focus and
behavior (4 points).

• ORQ= Open Response Question.
• You will be given a writing prompt/question that is directly
connected to one of the passages on the exam.
• You will write a 1-2 paragraph response using at least two
quotes from the passage.
• You will be scored based on a 0-4 point rubric.
• There will be four ORQ’s on the exam (36 multiple choice
questions, 4 ORQ’s and one long comp.)

Guidelines: As a closing to the Marquez story, you will analyze “The Incredible and Sad Tale of Erendira and
Her Heartless Grandmother” by writing an MCAS open-response question composition. The purpose of this
assessment is for you to show how much you understood the short story and also to further prepare you for
the upcoming MCAS exam. Follow the steps below to complete all pieces of the assessment:

Turn the prompt into a kid friendly question (KFQ)
Identify two-three potential pieces of evidence
Work with a partner to write a topic sentence (“mini-thesis statement”) that conveys an
accurate and sophisticated understanding of the short story and that addresses the
prompt.
Identify the parts of your composition by filling in the parts of the outline.
Complete an ORQ outline.
Work on improving your analysis by using sentence chaining.
Use the rubric to revise/improve your ORQ.
Use writing time in class wisely!
Ask for help if you get stuck!
