ETeCoS3 Registration Form This summer school is organized in the framework of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate (EMJD) in Environmental Technologies for Contaminated Solids, Soils and Sediments (ETeCoS3 - www.internationaldoctorate.unicas.it). EteCoS3 is a multidisciplinary and inter-sectorial consortium coordinated by the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio (Italy), the University of Paris-Est (France) and the UNESCO-IHE (The Netherlands), and includes 15 academic associated members, 3 professional associations and 2 SME associated members. All members of the ETeCoS3 partnership are recognized internationally, with long-standing track records in research and higher education. The ETeCoS3 EMJD is centered around three key topics in environmental pollution: i) heavy metal, ii) recalcitrant organic pollutants and iii) contaminated solids. The EMJD focuses on fundamental and applied aspects to treat and remove these pollutants as well as on the development of recovery and reuse technologies with market potential. Università degli Studi di Cassino e del Lazio Meridionale Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II Summer School Biological Treatment of Solid Waste Cassino & Gaeta, Italy June 30-July 4, 2014 Erasmus Mundus Partners Description One of the main environmental problems of today’s society is the continuously increasing production of organic wastes. In many countries sustainable waste management as well as waste prevention and reduction have become major political priorities, representing an important share of the common efforts to reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions and to mitigate global climate change. This summer school will focus on the status and trends for the management of solid waste in Europe and all over the world. Particular attention will be given to biological treatments and their suitability to generate energy from waste. The application of biological systems other than landfills for the treatment of organic solid wastes is wide spreading all over the world due to their economical advantages over thermal treatments. Among biological treatments both aerobic and anaerobic processes will be assessed during the summer school. The best available procedures to optimize the design, operation and process control of treatment plants will be discussed, analyzing the criteria to maximize the plant performances both in terms of cost effectiveness and treatment efficiency. The summer school will train PhD students to understand the whole life cycle of biological waste management, and place it in the context of pollution control, resource recovery and reuse and climate change mitigation, focusing on the novel aspects of energy, organics and nutrients recovery from organic wastes.
