competence to the Uni versity to recognize the entry qualification to obtain the PhD;
the Legislative Decree N° 196 of 30 June 2003 "Code regarding the protection ofpersona/ data";
the Ministeria l Decree N° 270 of 22 October 2004 "Modijìcations Lo the Rules concerning the
teaching autonomy of Universities, approved by Decree of the Ministty of University, Scientijìc

the Ministerial Decree 18.06.2008 with which the annua! amount of the grant to attend
Ph.D. courses has been established at € 13,638.47 gross, including socia l security expenses to be
paid by the payee;
the Law N° 240 of 30 December 20 I O, in particular art. I9, containing provisions for Ph Ds;
the memorandum from the Ministry of Education, University and Research N° 602 of 18/08/20 11
concerning the "Dichiarazione di valore" of qualifications released abroad;
the memorandums protocol No. 339/bi s of 16 February 20 12 and protocol N° 545 of 4
March 20 I I, from the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research the subject content of
which is " Fund f or the support ofyoung people";
the Rector's Decree N° 2 132of 2 1 October 201 3 on the proposa l for the establishment of
the PhD in Physical, Chemical and Materiai Sciences and Technologies, in agreement with
the Nati onal Research Council - Depattment of Physical Sciences and Technologies of
Matter;
the agreements stipulated with other ltalian and foreign lnstituti ons, as well as fo reign countries,
or specific international mobility programmes, in arder to finance grants;
the resolutions ofth e Departments of the University of Calabria to fin ance grants;
the Ministerial Decree N° 45 of 8 February 20 I3, "Regulation procedures fo r accrediting

the memorandum from the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research, the subject
content of which is "Guidelines for setting up doctoral research courses, academic year
2014/2015" of 16 Aprii 20 14;
the Regulati on of the Doctoral Programmes of Research of the Un iversity of Calabria,
issued by Rector's Decree No. I 330 of 3 July 20 I 3, modified by Rector's Decree
N° 1260 of30 June 2014;
the proposals to set up PhD programmes - 30th cycle- with administrative seat at the Un iversity
of Ca labria, presented by the University Departments;
the meeting of 5 May 2014 in which the Board of Directors, in compliance with art. I I of
University Regulations, established the distribution criteria for the PhD scholarships ofthe 30111
cycle, according to the financial resources al located by the Ministry of Education, Un iversities
and Research and/or available on the University budget;
the positive opinion issued by the Academic Senate at the meeting of 6 May 20 I 4 about the
abovementioned distribution criteria;
the opinion issued by the Evaluation Centre on I 9 May 20 I 4 concerning the existence of the
qualification criteria provided by national and international regulations for the 30111 cycle PhDs
at the University of Ca labria as administrative seat;
the meeting of I 9 May 20 I 4 in which the Board of Directors approved the proposal of
distribution of PhD scholarships;
the resolution of the Acadernic Senate of 20 May 20 I 4 conceming the distribution of PhD
scholarships;
the memorandum from the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research of 22 July 2014,
protocol N° 20285 providing the operational procedures to announce the competition for
admission to PhDs;
the necessity to promptly publish the procedures for admission to the 301h cycle PhDs at the
University of Calabria as admin istrative seat;
the necessity to establish and consequently issue the ca ll for applications for admission to 301h
cycle PhDs at the University of Ca labria as administrative seat, according to PhD accreditation
provided in M in isteria I Decree N° 45/20 I 3;
the necessity to explain that, should any courses not be implemented, the relevant admission
exams will not be held;
that the fundin g for the scholarships from the University will be provided on the
chapter F.S. 03. I 9 .04 "Scholarships for PhDs" of the budget of financial year 20 I 4;
DECREES
Art. 1
Institution and lmplementation
The 30111 PhD course cycle, with administrative seat at the University of Calabria, is hereby instituted ; the courses
shall offtcially begin on 3 November 20 I 4.
2.
A public competitive examination at the University of Ca labria is hereby announced for adm ission to the PhD
courses mentioned in the "Annex A - Analytical Tables - PhD courses 30111 cycle-Academic Year 20 14/2015", which is
an integrai part of this cali for applications.
3.
The public competition shall be based on one of the fo llowing procedures, as indicated for each course in Annex A:
- assessment of qualifications ;
- assessment of qualifications and examination ;
- assessment of qualifications and interview.
4.
For each PhD course, Annex A provides the fo llowing in formation: the Coordinator, the duration, the relevant
Department and any other Department that may be involved, the Subject Areas, the research topics or the course

curricula, the requi rements for participation, the abovementioned admission criteria, the qualitications to be enclosed with
the application, the assessment criteria, the number of available positions and the number of scholarships specifying the
funders and the research tields also in relation to the si ngle curricula if they are mentioned ; for the grants funded by the
lta lian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research, with reference to the "Fund for the support of young people'',
the main research fie ld in which the winner of the grant shall carry out his/her research, information on the exam
timetab le, an address for enquiries and the course website are also indicated.
5. The number of positions mentioned in "Annex A" may be increased, through subsequent provisions, if additional
fu nding from publi c or private institutions, national or international, is made available after the publication of this call for
applications and to be defined within its expiry date, without changing the deadline for app lying.
6.
Any funding provided by external institutions will be allocated subject to the successfu l conclusi on of the agreement
entered into by the University and the lnstitution involved.
7.
This call for applications will be publi shed on the website of the Italian Mini stry of Education, Universities and
Research and on the University websites: http://www.un ical. it/portale/concorsi/
and http://www.unical.it/portale/didattica/index.cfm it is eq uiva lent to a notitication to al! intents and purposes. Any
modification, update or addition to its content will be exclusively notitied via publication on the University website and
on the page: http ://www.unica l.it/portale/d idattica/index.cfm.
8.
Any persona! communication to the applicants concern ing this competition wi ll be given by e-mail. To this purpose,
the address provided by the applicant in the online application form will be used.
9.
The University shall not be responsible for any loss of communications due to the applicant providing incorrect
contact details or failing to promptly communicate a change in them, neither for postai or telecommun ication error.
10. The presentation of the application via the procedure mentioned in art. 3 implies the acceptance of the ru les
contained in this announcement and in the University Ph D Regulations by the app licant. Fai Iure to respect these rules will
result in the applicant being excluded from the competition.
Art. 2
Admission requirements
I.
Applicants of any citizenship and age can submit their application for the selection procedure to access the PhD
Courses mentioned in article I , prov ided they hold one of the fo llowing qualifications :
a. A Degree released by an lta lian University prior to Ministerial Decree 509/99.
b. A "Laurea Spec ialistica/Magistrale"(Master's Degree) released by an ltalian University in pursuance of
Ministeria l Decree. 50911999 and Ministerial Decree 270/2004;
c. An international academic qualification released by a lega lly recognised foreign Un iversity and declared
equivalent or suitable for admission to an ltalian PhD course.
The specific Degrees required to access each PhD course are listed in the course descriptions contained in Annex A
of this announcement.
2.
Applicants who will take the qualification required in paragraph I before 3 l st October 2014 are also entitled to apply
for the competition. By this deadline, applicants shall cornmunicate the qualification has been taken by send ing "Ann ex
C" via e- mail uffic io.dottorati@unical.it. Fa ilure to take the qualification by the abovementioned deadline will result in
the applicant being excluded frorn the merit ranking.
3.
Applications fro m students already enrolted in a PhD course at the University of Calabria will not be accepted.
4.
Applicants who already hold a PhD are only eligible and rnay only apply for positions without scholarships.
5.
All applicants, under penalty of losing the right to be ad mitted to the selection procedure, must enclose to the
application form the documents referred to art.5 comma 2.

Art. 3
Degree released by foreign universities
1.
Applicants who hold qualifications released abroad have to attach a declaration of equivalence to their application.
2. In case of absence of the above declaration, the candidates are admitted to the publi c competitive examination under
condition and they may obtain recognition of their qualification only to the
purpose of admi ssion to the PhD program, by making an explicit request for equivalence in the appl ication form to the
Admissions Committee which wi ll evaluate the suitability of the applicant's academic qualification far the sole purpose
of enrolment on the PhD program in compliance with relevant laws in farce in ltaly and in the country where the
qualification has been released and in compliance with international treaties or agreements on the recognition of
qualifications far the continuation of higher education studies.
3. To this purpose, applicants must attach to the application farm certificates and transcripts of prev ious higher education ,
translated into ltalian or in English, also translated by and under the responsibility of the candidate him/herself.
Should the applicant's course of studies include a first and second leve I degree (e.g. Bachelor's + Master's Degree),
certificates far both degrees must be submitted, including a list of exams taken and standard duration of the course/s.
4. Results ofthe equivalence assessment carried out by the Admissions Committee, to the so le purpose of enrolment on
the PhD prograrn, will be published exclusively on the web site www.unical.it/portale/didattica/dottorati and will not be
directly cornrnunicated to the candidates.
5. The issuing of the above rnentioned documentati on and of a residence perm it to parti eipate in the tests and to attend the
course to foreign national s is regulated by the note of the italian Ministry far Education, Universities and Research,
protocol N. 602 of 18 May 20 I I ("Ru les and regu lations concern ing the access of foreign students to courses far the three
year period 2011 /2014"), available at the fallowing address: http://www.studiare-in-italia.it/studentistranieri/5. htrn l.
6. Within the registration date, attached to the application forrn , the candidates have to deliver to the Cornpetent Office
the certified Degree Certificates provided by the " Dichiarazione di Valore in Loco", (Declaration of Value) ofthe
applicant's qualifications, issued by the ltalian diplornatic and consular rnissions of the Country in wh ich the Degree was
awarded. Candidates with degree released by European Universities can submit the originai or certified copy (in the
originai language or in English) of the Diploma Supplernent released by the issuing university, instead of Declaration or
Value.
If the Declaration of Value establishes that the exhibited Degree Certificate does not entitle the enrolment to a PhD
prograrn analogous to the one far which the application is made, the applicant will lose the right to participate to the PhD
program itself.
Art. 4
Positions reserved to applicants holding a degree released abroad, applicants with a scholarship from a foreign
country and applicants holding a scholarship from a specific lnternational mobility programme
t . Applicants holding a degree released abroad or a scholarship from a fareign country or a scholarship frorn a specific
International rnobility programrne wi ll be se lected through a qualification assessment and, unl ess otherwise specified in
the specific PhD course description mentioned in art. 1, will also undertake an interview via videoconference.
2. The Admissions Comrnittee will draw up specific reports and separate ranking lists. Should any positions reserved to
candidates holding a degree released abroad rernain vacant, they may be made available far the unreserved competition.

Application
1. The application for admission to the selectio n procedure, under penalty of exclusion from the competition, must be
submitted, duly signed, by 15 september 2014, 12:00 Otalian time) at the Jatest, compulsorily printed from the on-l ine
procedure available at the address: http://www. unical.it/portale/didattica/index.cfm/, http://unica l. ugmanager.it/ in one of
the fo llowing methods:
a) delivered by hand to the Office ofthe Generai Protocol ofthe University of Calabria, Via Pietro Succi,
Administration Building - Ground Floor - Arcavacata Rende (CS); on the package conta ining the application

The Administration is autho rized to use, for any communication, the same med ium w ith fu ll effectiveness and
guarantee of knowledge as the docume nts sent by the applicant.
Applications submitted via any otber means w ill not be cons idered. Candidates are res ponsible for ensuring tbat
their online application has been completed accurately and in full ; tbis University declines ali responsibility for any

3. Candidates w~o wish to ~ake ~art in more than one competition will have to submit a separate application for
each, together wath the quahficahons requested, and pay an admission fee for each PhD competition selected.
4. The following application forms will not be accepted for participation in the selcction, and consequently will be
automatically excluded:
a. application forms received beyond the deadline mentioned in this notice, even if shipped before the deadline;
b. application forms without the candidate's signature;
c. application forms without copy, back and front, of a valid identity document;
d. application forms without the name of the PhD in which the candidate intends to participate;
e. application forms without research project;
f. application forms without curriculum vitae et studiorum;
g. application forms without other qualifications required for evaluation;
h. application forms without documents required to evaluate the equivalence of a Degree released by a foreign
university;
i. application forms without receipt of payment of the admission fee.
The Rector's Decree of exclusion from the competition wi ll be published on the website http://unical. ugmanager.it on the
page Decreti e Avvisi befare the first exam ination. No persona) letters wi ll be sent directly to candidates.
Rejected candidates may ask far the reason of their exclusion by writing to the Rector. This request must be submitted in
one of the three ways indicated in paragraph I of this Article. Explanations wi ll not be given to requests made in other
ways.
5. The University Administration cannot be held responsible far documentation wh ich goes astray due to mistaken
indication of residence and postai address given by the applicant and/or due to the fact that candidates have not
communicated any changes or have comm unicated them tao late, or far any errors in postai or telegraphic del ivery made
by third parties.
6. According to the nature of their disability and in compliance with Law N° I0411992 and its integration Law N° 17/99,
disabled candidates may request the use of special equ ipment and additional time to complete the examination. Pursuant
to Law N° 170/20 1O, candidates with learning disabilities shall be granted 30% more time than the standard allowed time
to complete their examination, in relation to the type of examination that is being taken. Candidates with disabilities who
need to use special equipment during the examination, in pursuance with Law N° I 04/ 1992 and its integration Law
N°17/99, shall provide this information in the on-line application farm, specifyin g the type of equipment they will need.
7. Ali candidates are admitted to the examination conditionally: their applications are verified to check that they meet
the requirements set in this announcement, which shall be done in pursuance with art. 43 of DPR n. 445 of 28 December
2000. The Administrative office may decide on the exclu sion of any candidate frorn the selection procedure at any time.
The Administrative office shall also verify the truthfulness of the self-certifications provided by candidates. Applicants
providing false declarations will be punished in compliance with the ltalian criminal code and special laws on the matter.
8. The University reserves the right to enfarce, even after the public exarn is aver, sanctions far the exclusion of
candidates who have failed to cornply with or rneet up to requirernents herein established.
Art. 6
Admission
I. Admission is carried out according to the procedures described far each course in "Annex A'', wh ich is an integrai part
of this Decree.
2. The admission tests schedule far each course listed in the abovementioned "A nnex A" is equiva lent to a notification to
applicants. Any rnodifications, updates or additions to its content will be published exclusively on the website of the
University of Calabria at http://www.unical.it/porta le/didattica/index.c frn and http://unical.u gmanager.it/ at the page

Fai Iure to take part in the adm ission tests wi Il be considered as constituting a withdrawal from the appl ication process.
3. In order to sit the exams, candidates shall be asked to exhibit one of the fo llowing identity documents:
a. identity card;
b. driving licence;
c. passport;
d. post offi ce card ;
e. gun licence.
4. The se lection procedure, in order to ascertain the applicant 's aptitude for scientific research, is an assessment of the
applicant 's qualifications, in accordance with " Annex A" for each PhD programme, through a written test and/or an oral
examination.
5.The table published for each Doctorate shows the points awarded for each test, the criteria for attributing th em and the
threshold scores to pass to the next phase of the tests.
6.The written examination (if any) shall be taken by alt candidates in ltalian. The Examining Board may however
decide that the essay must be written in a foreign language by ali candidates.
7. The ora! examination (if any), is public and focuses on the assessment of the know ledge of one or more foreign
languages.
8. Applicants residing abroad and willing to take the offsite ora! examination by videoconference must fi li in the form
contained in "Annex B" of this notice and send it together with the application forrn . In this communication, ca ndidates
should indicate an address at a University or Embassy and the name of an offi cer who can establish their identities before
the interview. The possibility of using this procedure is subject to approvai by the Adm issions Comm ittee after
verificati on of technical feasibility. The Admissions Comm ittee shall ensure the conditions necessary to assure proper
conduct of the test (verification of the candidate identity and interview correctness). Fai Iure to connect on-li ne orto be
available at the set date and time shall result in the candidate' s exclusion from the selection. The University is not to be
held responsible or liable for technical failure that may hinder the interview.
9. The Admissions Committee will draw up specific report. Candidates will be ranked in descending order according to
the tota! score obtained by each candidate in the scheduled tests and the qualification assessment.
IO. For PhD programmes invo lving reserved places, separate lists will be drawn up, while for the PhD courses
articulated in curricula, a single merit list will be publi shed.
I I. Scholarships are allocated to suitable candidates based upon:
a . the ranking position;
b. the suitabi lity of any option expressed by the candidate for topic scholarships.
Where the candidate is found to be suitable both for a generai scholarship and a topic scholarship, the Admissions
Committee wi ll decide which scho larship to allocate, taking into acco unt the overa ll assessment, the qualification and the
documentation submitted.
12. lf more candidates have an identica! score in the ranking list, the scho larship w ill be awarded on the basis of the
candidate' s economie situation, pursuant to D.P.C. M. of 9 Apri i 2001 and subsequent modiftcations and integrations; for
pos itions without a scho larship, the youngest candidate wi ll have priority.
13. The President of the Admi ssions Committee wil l submit the competition reports to the Rector.
14. Candidates may view the documents of the selection procedure, in compliance with current laws and regulations (Law
No. 24 1/ 1990 and subsequent modifications and integrations and D.P.R. No. 184/2006) .
Art. 7
Ad missions Committees
I. The Admissions Committees in charge of the PhD competitions are appo inted by the Rector in accordance with the
University of Calabria "Regulation for PhD courses".
2. The composition of each Admi ssion Committee will be published, after the announcement deadline has expired, on the
website http://unica l.ugmanager.it, at the page Decreti e Avvisi.

l. The Rector acts to verify the validity of the competition records and approves the ranking lists for each selection
procedure with a Rector's Decree.

3. Candidates are admitted to the PhD courses in the ranking li st order unti! ali positions for the relevant PhD are taken.
Should a candidate decide not to take up his/her piace before the course starts, his/her piace may be taken by another
candidate according to the ranking list order. Candidates who are successful in more than one selection can choose only
one PhD position.
4.Prevailing laws regarding time off work or special leave will apply to any public admini stration employees admitted to a
PhD course.
5. Candidates who have participated in the selection process for reserved positions will be admitted to the PhD courses
unti] ali positions allocated to such candidates have been filled .
Art. 9
How to enrol
l. Candidates who have been admitted to the doctoral courses, under penalty of expiration, shall hand in or send their
application form (available on the website: http://unical.u gmanager.it) to the PhD Office, within the deadline of 8 (eight)
days from receiving the communication of admission to a PhD.
2. Candidates residing abroad must confirm their will of enrolling, under penalty of expiration, by contacting the
PhD Office by e-mail at ufficio.dottorati@unical. it within the deadline of 5 (fi ve) days from the publication of the ranking
list. Such candidates must compl ete their enro lment no later than I Dicember 20 15. Upon
decision of the Academic Board, foreign cand idates may be allowed to start frequency of the first year in the subsequent
academic year, if they are unable to obtain the entry vi sa within the stated deadline. However, registration must be
completed by the beginning of the subsequent academic year, under penalty of exclusion.

4.Enro lment in another course which assigns an academic qualification, even from another ltalian or foreign University, is
not allowed, except for medicai specialization courses, in compliance with current laws and regulations.
5. In the event of waivers from successful candidates, the vacancies are awarded to those who hold a good position in the
ranking. These applicants will be notified by e-mail by the PhD Office.
6. The University Administration reserves the right to check the val idity of winner' s declarations. Any applicant found to
have made fa lse statements will lose the benefits arising from these declarations.

Scholarships
t. The amount of the scholarship is € 13,638.47 per year gross of socia] security payable by the PhD student. The
scholarship is exempt from loca i income tax and personal income tax (IRPEF).

2. In order to benefit from the scholarship, the winner must have and keep for the duration of the course a persona! gross
annua! income not exceeding € 15,000.00.
3. The doctoral grant is paid in monthly in stalments, it lasts one year and is renewed annually, for the entire duration of
the course, provided that the PhD student has been admitted to the followi ng year by the Acadernic Board.
4. PhD scholarships cannot be cornbined with research grants or other scholarships awarded for any reason whatsoever.
The only exceptions are allowed fo r grants and scholarships assigned by national or international bodies to support
train ing or research activity abroad.
5. The amount of the doctora l grant shall be increased by 50% for an overall period of no more than 18 months, if the
graduate student is authorized to by the Acadernic Board to carry out research abroad.
6. Students who have already benefited from a Ph D scholarship, even partially, are not eli gible fora second one.
Art. 11
Rights and obligations of PhD students
I. Ad mission to PhD prograrnrn es obliges Ph D students to full -time attendance of the PhD prograrnrne. PhD students
must regularly attend courses and carry out ali research and study acti vities assigned to thern by the relevant Department
of the University, according to the procedures set out by the Acadernic Board of the PhD programme to wh ich, at the end
of each academic year, they must submit a report on the research activities they carried out.
2. Doctoral students rnay take leave of absence frorn the course on ly in the following cases, which shall be fully and duly
certified: rnatern ity and illness. Students rnust recover the period of absence frorn study and research activities.
3. PhD students rnay carry out tutorial activities for undergrad uate and postgraduate students, as well as supplementary
teaching activities as part of their training project; these activities are not eligible for an increase in the scholarship. Ali
activities must be previously authori sed by the Acadern ic Board for a max im um of forty hours per academic year. The
limit is not applicable after the third year of the Ph D prograrnrne.
4. Starting frorn the second year, each PhD student will be allowed to use a budget for research activities in ltaly and
abroad which will not be less than 10% of the amount of the scholarship.

where generai information will be publi shed.
Art. 12
Final exam and conferment of qualification
The title of Ph.D. ("Dottore di Ricerca") is awarded by the Rector of the University of Ca labria, once the course is
completed following a public defence, in front of a committee appointed by the Rector, of a research thesis which will
contribute to the improvement of knowledge or methodologies in the chosen fi eld of research.
At the en d of the defence of the thesis, it is either approved or rejected with a joint motivated decision of the Examination
Committee.
The Examination Committee, with unanirnous vote, may assign ftrst class honours for outstanding scientific results .
Candidates shall file their final thesis in the lnstitutional University Repository, an open access archive, which guarantees
conservation and public access. The University of Calabria will also undertake to send the fi nal thesis to the National
Libraries of Rome and Florence, in compliance with the current regulation.

E ntry and tuition fees
Successfu l students, with or without scholarship, are exempted from any payrnent of fee except for the Regional Tax for
the Right to Education ("Tassa Regionale per il Diritto allo Studio"), which shall be ca lculated according to the economie
lSEE band the PhD student fall s into (ISEE bands are calcu lated according to income), and the Accident lnsurance
Premium .
