Str¨ omberg Scientific and Teaching Activities Scientific background I am currently employed as Professor in Machine Design with focus on Simulation & Optimization at J¨onk¨oping University. I am also official research leader since 2010 for a group on Simulation & Optimization of machine components and mechanical systems. My early scientific background concerns computational contact mechanics. In this field I became associate Professor (oavl¨onad docent) in 2005 at Link¨oping University. The corresponding Ph.D. thesis had been presented eight years before. In 2004 I started a new path of my research when I moved to J¨onk¨oping University. Research within the field of simulation- and optimization driven design was initiated by developing methods within the field of topology optimization and surrogate based design optimization (SBDO). Meanwhile I have continued my research on computational contact mechanics by developing a unique method for simulating frictional heating in disc brakes. In addition, research on residual stresses from solidification of castings has also been conducted together with two Ph.D. students of mine1 . My research on topology optimization, SBDO and frictional heating in disc brakes is collected in three toolboxes which are presented in more detail below. I have published 20 peer-reviewed journal papers (an additional one is submitted), 33 papers in conference proceedings and a large number of abstracts in conferences. I have been reviewer for 12 different journals, member of the scientific committee for two international conferences, a member of the grading committee of three Ph.D. theses, and the opponent for two licentiate theses. I addition, I have also more than two years of experience as mechanical engineer at ABB Atom, Saab Aero and ERAB. Toolbox-driven research A clear ambition in all my projects, both for me and my Ph.D. students, is to package the research in a toolbox. Today, three mature toolboxes exist: one for topology optimization (topo4abq), one for SBDO (meta4abq) and a toolbox for frictional heat simulation in disc brakes (brake43p). 1 Youtube movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Qi3GoCeLh4 Scientific and Teaching Activities 1 Bilaga 1 N. Str¨ omberg Figure 1: A trade-off curve between the compliance and the volume fraction for a gear shift component generated by a hyperoptimal formulation with contact conditions. Results generated by Topo4abq (www.fema.se). Topo4abq can solve large problems in three-dimensions with contact conditions and draw directions included. A bench-mark of a crank-follower mechanism is presented in Figure 1, showing the trade-off between compliance and volume. Currently, development of methods for problems with non-matching meshes and problems with large deformations are on-going. Meta4abq includes several options for design of experiments, surrogate models, optimization methods, robustness analysis and reliability based design optimization. The latter feature has been developed most recently in a ProViking project (ProOpt). In the development of this toolbox, not only gradient based methods have been utilized, but also methods from the field of soft computing have been adopted such as genetic algorithms, particle swarm algorithms, artificial neural networks, Kriging and radial basis function networks. Both topo4abq and meta4abq can be downloaded from http://www.fema.se and are used in my master course on optimization driven design. Finally, a unique method for simulating frictional heating in disc brakes is implemented in brake43p. Instead of adopting a standard Lagrangian approach, the disc is formulated in an Eulerian frame. In such manner the material of the disc flows through the mesh and a most effective algorithm is obtained. Figure 2 shows a heat band in a real disc brake to a heavy truck simulated by using the Scientific and Teaching Activities 2 Bilaga 1 N. Str¨ omberg toolbox. Currently, the method is connected to a flexible multi-body model of a test rig. In such manner, virtual rig tests of disc brakes are made possible. This work will be presented at a conference in June. Figure 2: A heat band developed in a disc brake. From N. Str¨omberg, An Eulerian Approach for Simulating Frictional Heating in Disc-Pad Systems, European Journal of Mechanics, A/Solids, 30, 673–683, 2011. Supervising Ph.D. students Today, I am head supervisor for three Ph.D.-students (A. Rashid, M. Tapankov, K. Amouzgar). They all work in the field of finite element simulation and optimization of machine components. Two of them are preparing their licentiate theses which are planned to be presented before summer. The third student recently begun his work on multi-objective optimization of machine components by using surrogate models. Previously, I have been the head supervisor for two Ph.D. students, one finishing with the degree of licentiate of engineering (E. Gustafsson), and the other one with the degree of doctor (M. Hofwing). Projects that have or are financing these Ph.D. students are • VIKTOR, 2006-2009, 900 kSEK, Viktsoptimalt gjutgods med topologioptimering, del i st¨orre projekt, Vinnova. • MERA-Pl˚ at, 2006-2010, 3000 kSEK, Viktsoptimala pl˚ atformningsverktyg, del i st¨orre projekt, Vinnova. • ProOpt-Optimeringsdriven design, 2010-2012, 2700 kSEK, Optimeringsdriven design av komponenter, del i st¨orre projekt, ProViking, Strategiska stiftelsen. • FFI-Broms, del 1, 2010-2012, 2700 kSEK, Simulering och optimering av bromssystem, Vinnova. Scientific and Teaching Activities 3 Bilaga 1 N. Str¨ omberg • FFI-Broms, del 2, 2012-2014, 2500 kSEK, Simulering och optimering av bromssystem, Vinnova. The total funding of these projects is 11800 kSEK. The partners have been LiTH, Chalmers, Altair, CybAero, Enmesh, ERAB, Esteco, Kongsberg Automotive, GM Powertrain, SAAB Aero, SAAB Auto, Volvo Cars and Volvo Trucks. Furthermore, I have also been assistant supervisor for two Ph.D.students, O. Lundvall and P. Ireman, in the field of computational contact mechanics. One project concerned development of new methods for fretting fatigue and in the other project methods for studying the transmission error in gears were developed. They presented their theses in 2003 and 2004, respectively. I took a major role in both these projects, which was an important experience for me at that time. During this period I also took a course on supervising Ph.D.-students. Teaching background I have over 15 years of experience in teaching different courses in engineering mechanics. On the bachelor level I have given courses on solid mechanics, statics, particle dynamics and rigid body dynamics. On the master level I am currently giving courses on non-linear finite elements and design optimization. In addition, I have given four Ph.D.-courses, one in non-linear finite element analysis, continuum mechanics, probability, reliability and statistical methods in engineering design, and currently a course on computational contact mechanics. I have more than 2500 classroom hours of experience. I have developed several courses and tutorials, written course material, supervised several master thesis projects and also won prizes for teaching. During the last years I have put a lot of effort in writing a textbook on finite element analysis and design optimization for mechanical engineers. The book is free and can be downloaded from http://www.fema.se. The book was released in October last year and has since then been downloaded 586 times (2013-03-16). I have also taken a most active roll when developing our bachelor programme and master program on Product development. The original idea of our master program is in fact my proposal. I have developed new courses on introduction to mechanics, rigid body dynamics, non-linear FEA and design optimization for our programmes. In addition, I took an active roll when we obtained the degree-awarding powers in the area industrial product realization, with three third-cycle subject areas: machine design, material and manufacturing, and production systems in 2010. Furthermore, the course on Applied Mechanics for the programme in Prosthetics and Orthotics at HHJ was partly developed by me. Examples of course materials, Scientific and Teaching Activities 4 Bilaga 1 N. Str¨ omberg a course evaluation when I begun at J¨onkping university, an example of a typical master thesis project, slides from my inaugural lecture as Professor in Machine Design and an award as the best teacher are enclosed as supplements. To summarize, I consider myself to be a very good teacher. My teaching philosophy is to train the students by continuously defining appropriate goals during the course which is checked by home assignments.
