WHY WOOD?
Kunnskap for en bedre verden
WHY WOOD?
• Its beautiful and comfortable to the body
•
•
•
•
It is part of our history and identity
Its easy to work with, excellent pedagogic material
Its basicly local
Is it sustainable?
– We need better calculations and link to Life Cyclus Analysis
– We need better knowledge on the facts of CO2 acountability
– We need better local cycles of production and use to reduce transport CO2

THE POWER OF PILOTS
Kunnskap for en bedre verden
Sustainable architecture at NTNU for 100 years
1919-1922: 27 test buildings at NTH campus
Measurements of energy loss on different wall envelopes. Result: wooden houses are better and cheaper than brick houses,
insulation works well with sawdust, coke gravel and double windows.

KEY FACTORS
FOR NOW AND THE FUTURE
Kunnskap for en bedre verden
Policy and regulations
• Policy on the use of wood as building material in public
sector.
• Building code with performance requirements on LCA
and complete CO2 footprint (including embodied
emissions, production, transport, montage, use, reuse
and demolition)
Kunnskap for en bedre verden
38
Research and innovation
• Create a critical mass of new knowledge by research
and education strong enough to make breakthroughs
• Dont spread the engagement all over the place
• Engage the industry in pilot projects
Kunnskap for en bedre verden
39
Education
• Collaborative cross disciplinary educational projects with
craftsmen, master students and PhD’s
• Students, students, students: trust the power of the
students
Kunnskap for en bedre verden

Whats next?
• Medium/large urban buildings
– Frame: Holistic model for knowledge development
– Threshold condition: political descisions on use of wood
– Pull: innovative industrial stakeholders aiming for market
penetration
– Push: joint effort on education and research
• Combination of old & new knowledge
