Valve Position Transmitters – Overview
Advantages of Valve Position Indicators
•
•
•
•
•
Three essential functions combined into one unit:
– Local Visual indicator
– Electrical feedback indication
– Junction box for termination of the solenoid valve, limit switches and
other devices
For automated and manually operated valves
Status of all valves is known in control room
– increases safety and control
Visible indicator speeds system checking
– Can be used with electrical limit switch indication or as a stand alone
visual indicator only
Ideal for indoor, outdoor, aggressive and corrosive environments
– Robust design stands up to industrial abuse
– Housing materials available to suit application
– Wide range of switches and sensors match environment
– Proven to be reliable and cost effective

Selection Process – 2. Signal Type
2. Control Signal Type
The Signal type is dependent on the end user’s process control
system and the I/O cards used
•
•
Traditional feedback signals are line voltage AC, around 500 mA
– SPDT contact types typically used
– Standard mechanical switches are sufficient
– Tungsten TTL proximity switches are also acceptable
– Voltage and current fluctuations/spikes from unconditioned line power require
switches that can handle the application
Newer control systems are using low current/low voltage DC signals as low
as 8 V and 20 mA
– Gold plated mechanical switches (low cost option)
– Rhodium TTL switches are the best chopice
• Standard mechanical switches are not recommended as the silver
contacts can tarnish, increasing contact resistance
• Tungsten switches have a high contact resistance to begin with

Selection Process – 2. Signal Type
•
•
Custom feedback applications
– Redundant feedback switching (4 SPDT switches)
– DPDT switches combining feedback and local relay control
– 3 wire DC PNP or NPN sensors
– 2 wire sensors with parameters specific to the control cards used
– Pneumatic switches
Valve Networking with ASi, DeviceNet, Profibus or Foundation Fieldbus
protocols
– To be reviewed in a later section

Selection Process – 3. Environment
3. Installation Environment
The most overlooked concern, leading to the most failures
•
•
•
•
Dry, indoor environments with constant temperature
– The least challenging for VPTs
• Mechanical SPDT switches with silver contacts, aluminum enclosures acceptable
Outdoor environments
– Condensation will collect inside enclosure
• Aluminum flanges and silver contacts will corrode
Corrosive Environments
– Caustic wash down
– Valves with corrosive chemicals with leak vapors, vapors will combine w/ condensation
and create a corrosive liquid
– Outdoor salt water
• These applications require specific constructions
» Plastic enclosures, encapsulated switches, anodized aluminum for
explosion-proof applications
Hot (boiler / furnace room) environments
– Use special switches designed for high temperature

Non-Contact “Proximity” Switches
Hermetically Sealed Non-Contact Reed Switches
Excel In Aggressive Environments
•Rhodium TTL SPDT / SPST - Rhodium elements are rated 1A at 24VDC,
for low current / voltage DC control signal applications (less than 20ma).
MTBF > 1,000,000 cycles, contact resistance 1/5 of Tungsten
•Tungsten TTL SPDT- Tungsten elements provide high current handling
capability to 3A / 120VAC. The choice for AC feedback signals.
•Bifurcated TTL SPST switches made popular by their
excellent low current handling capability - 5mA @ 5V.
•Krystal TTL SPDT - LED Set Lights plus Rhodium elements provide
0.3A current rating at 24VDC or 120 VAC.
TTL switches are driven by a nickel plated magnet encapsulated in the
cam mounted on the shaft. The magnet trips the switch element enclosed in the switch
housing. Moniteur’s patented loc-ring shaft retention system insures reliable output signals.
•Choose TTL Switches for damp, humid or corrosive environments, low current feedback
signals and high cycling applications where signal reliability is critical to the process.
•TTL Switches are hermetically sealed and can be used in Division 2 - Groups A, B, C & D
environments without conduit seal fittings.

Inductive Sensors
Inductive Sensors match your advanced
Process Control System
•Pepperl & Fuchs popular NJ2-V3 NAMUR sensor is FM
approved Intrinsically Safe and is specified at plants
worldwide. NBB2-V3-Z4, NBB2-V3-US, and SJ1.5SN/S1N sensors are also available
•Efector NS 5003 NAMUR sensor is also FM approved Intrinsically Safe
and includes setting lights built into the sensor
Inductive Sensors are solid state (no moving parts) and constantly provide a feedback signal. They
are the most reliable sensor type, with a MTBF of over 20 million cycles. When the metallic trigger
enters the sensor’s magnetic field, the signal strength changes. This signal differential is used to
indicate valve position.
Choose Inductive Sensors for applications requiring 2-wire sensor output. Because
they consume power during normal operation, Inductive Sensors can and must
have Intrinsically Safe approval to be used in a hazardous area.

Common Switch Problems
Field Experience: Intermittent feedback signals due to switch corrosion
Cause: Switch not chosen for corrosive applications
Solution: Choose switch for environment
• Hermetically Sealed TTL Non-Contact switches can replace SPDT
mechanical switches with no change in wiring or programming
• Hermetically Sealed Inductive Sensors
Field Experience: Intermittent feedback signals - DC control signals
Cause: Switch not suitable for low level DC signals
Solution: Choose Rhodium TTL Proximity Switches
• Standard Tungsten contacts are not stable for low current, low voltage DC signals
• Due to low contact resistance, Rhodium TTL proximity switches can handle signals
as low as 5ma @ 5VDC.
Field Experience: Intermittent feedback signals
Cause: Cams not set properly
Solution: Set cams with a meter and not by eye - this is a common problem
