Where next?
Continuing to influence the world
Our achievements in the past year alone will lead to improvements in the health,
environment and technology sectors.
In 2009, for example we:
• discovered how to produce liver cells specific to
certain ethnic groups, potentially revolutionising drug
treatments
• invented a molecular device that could lead to the
creation of futuristic, super-fast, quantum computers
• invented new methods to improve the tracking of
earthquakes
• invented a high-speed computer chip that makes MP3
players and mobile phones smaller, faster and more
environmentally friendly
• developed techniques to create synthetic blood for use
in transfusions
