PC-based NPP Simulators for Education Chad Painter Nuclear Power Technology Development Section (NPTDS) May 2014 IAEA International Atomic Energy Agency Meeting Objectives 1) Understand IAEA’s PC-based Simulators 2) Learn how these tools are being used in educational and training programmes 3) Understand the needs of Member States 4) Discuss how improvements in these tools can enhance the learning experience IAEA IAEA Simulator Project Objective “Assist member states in educating nuclear researchers, engineers, professionals, and regulators” PC-based simulators provide a relatively easy to learn educational tool, Simulators provide insight and understanding into basic Operational Characteristics, Reactivity Control Features, and Safety Systems, Allow students to explore and examine various plant responses to Transients, Malfunctions, and Accidents. IAEA Simulators Basic Principles IAEA Engineering Full Scope Project Accomplishments • Since 1997, the IAEA has distributed well over 500 CDs containing simulators. • In the last 2 years, the IAEA distributed over 100 CDs to more than 35 Member States. • Additionally, the IAEA co-sponsored 17 Simulator Workshops in various countries; Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Republic of Korea, Italy, Spain, USA, and Austria. IAEA So what does the Project provide? • CD Rom • Contains software & instruction manual • Several require Windows 7 • Several require Windows XP IAEA List of Simulators Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) Simulators Generation II Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) 2-Loop Large PWR (Korean-OPR 1000) Russian-type PWR (WWER-1000) Advanced Passive PWR (AP-600) Boiling Water Reactor (BWRs) Simulators Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) Advanced Passive BWR (ESBWR) Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) Conventional PHWR (CANDU-6) Advanced PHWR (ACR-700) TRIGA Research Reactor Simulator IAEA Related IAEA Documents TECDOC-1411 • Methods to train NPP personnel using simulators; includes practical examples. • A section related to “other than full scope simulators.” TECDOC-995 • Design and use of various types of simulators.
