Conclusion 1 Construction Development Corporation Limited CDCL background • Mechanical Division under the Dept. of Roads, MoWHS until 30th June 2006. • Corporatized and renamed as CDCL in line with the GG+ recommendations from 1st July 2006 . • Incorporated under the Companies Act of the Kingdom of Bhutan 2000 on 7th Dec. 2009. 2 Vision & Mission of CDCL a. Vision: To trigger modernization and mechanization of nascent local construction industry. b. Mission: To take lead role in introducing appropriate Construction technology and machinery. As a part of this , CDCL will maintain or establish equipment bank. To venture into technology intensive Construction and help to build capacity of local construction industry through technical collaborations. 3 Objectives of CDCL i. To manage construction machinery resources and assets of the Government efficiently, productively & transparently and to provide optimum services thereof. ii. To carry on any business or activity related to outsourcing of machinery & support services, production & fabrications, trading & contractual works, repair quarrying & crushing, hauling and transportation works, and construction development iii. To spearhead mechanization process and promote quality of infrastructure works in the country through introduction of appropriate technology and cost effective services for the benefit of the construction industry in particular. iv. To venture into full scale technology intensive construction heavy activities such as participating in mega hydropower projects, tunneling, bridges, airport and road construction projects in the near future. 4 Emerging trends & innovation in roads mechanization Definition Innovation, a broad social and economic activity within emerging societies, transcends any specific technology, even if revolutionary, and is tied to attitudes and behaviors oriented towards the exploitation of change by adding value. The solution-space for innovation for sustainability is characterized by three dimensions: the entire lifespan of a product; the entire socio-technique network of which a particular plant is part of, or from which a particular product emerges; stakeholders and decision processes, including business organizations and strategies; and public institutions, policy and regulatory frameworks. Cont’d 5 Emerging trends & innovation in roads mechanization Automation vs. Mechanization Before purchasing equipment, growers must decide what level of automation is suitable as per the Bhutanese scenario. Mechanization- the replacement of a human task with a machine. Automation - involves the entire process, including bringing material to and from the mechanized equipment. It normally involves integrating several operations and ensuring that the different pieces of equipment talk to one another to ensure smooth operation . 6 Emerging trends & innovation in roads mechanization Ref: progressdaily.com CASE STUDY 7 Emerging trends & innovation in roads mechanization Over half of the world’s infrastructure investment is now taking place in emerging economies, where sales of construction equipment have risen more than fivefold since 2000. In total, emerging economies are likely to spend an estimated $1.2 trillion on roads, railways, electricity, telecommunications and other projects, equivalent to 6% of their combined GDPs — twice the average infrastructure- investment ratio in developed economies. 8 Emerging trends & innovation in roads mechanization The World Bank estimates that a 1% increase in a country’s infrastructure stock is associated with a 1% increase in the level of GDP. A 1% rise in income per head leads to a 0.5% increase in demand. Putting this together, energy demand may have to surge by 140% in China and by 80% in India over the next decade. A 1% increase in income per person leads to a 1.4% increase in the number of passengers travelling by air, so the number of air passengers could jump by more than 350% in China and by 200% in India over the next decade. 9 Emerging trends & innovation in roads mechanization EQUIPMENT SELECTION CRITERIA Increased demand of equipment with distinctive features are driving the stationary concrete pumping and concrete boom pumps sector in emerging economies. Specialization is being characterized in utilization of concrete pumps among contractors both for high end and real estate projects. The distinction is essentially in terms of usage of equipment with enhanced concrete pumping pressure, better reach and rugged features to counter abrasion. 10 Emerging trends & innovation in roads mechanization Mobile vs. Static Crushers: The Better Deal • As per the global trend, there is an increased acceptance of mobile crushers •They have greater mobility, and compactness coupled with host of other benefits. •Nonetheless, static crushers are best equipped for high capacity mining activities. 11 Emerging trends & innovation in roads mechanization Mobile vs. Static Crushers: Comparison The demand choice for a Track mounted mobile crusher : Rapidly rising cost of quarry operation Led by lack of qualified manpower to operate the plants. 65-70% of the crushing aggregate market is dominated by Track Mounted mobile plants. Compact equipment which can move from site to site at a rapid pace with minimal logistical hassles. Cont’d 12 Emerging trends & innovation in roads mechanization Being mobile, compact and self-driven, enables the tracked units to operate close to the quarry site, thereby curtailing the use of large conveyors belts, in turn offsetting recurring operating maintenance costs. The tracked equipment can be commissioned and dismantled in a day or a week time at the outmost, thereby keeping residual losses at bare minimal, as compared to a static plant.” 13 Emerging trends & innovation in roads mechanization Construction Sector: Current Scenario & Emerging Trends Crusher manufacturers are placing products with improved features for higher productivity coupled with low operating costs for the aggregate industry. Significant improvements automated features in like the adding machines, dovetailed by making the equipment rugged for higher productivity and lower maintenance & cut down on manual operations which in turn will bring down operation costs to a good extent, as skilled manpower is getting costly to afford by most of the aggregate producers. 14 Emerging trends & innovation in roads mechanization Chained Equipment Composition Application Here, the selection of equipment is based on need in order to save time and increase productivity with quality. A road-broom, batching plant, hauling trucks, paving equipment and a tandem roller are engaged in sequence. By doing so, a lot time is saved, productivity/output is optimized and quality is assured. 15 Emerging trends & innovation in roads mechanization Advantages of Mechanization (Global Scenario) Cost savings leads to improve product quality and time saving. Large scale automation and integration of modern manufacturing system Computer control technologies and communication network. Trouble free operations Advantages of Mechanization (Bhutanese Scenario) Reduction of imported laborers Job opportunity for national skilled workers 16 Conclusion Bhutan cannot remain isolated and shy away from the use of available technology and has to find out solution by proper selection of the technology in Bhutanese scenario. The Mechanization through improved technology would bring a remarkable change to the construction sector in the kingdom in the sense that it will be a milestone in Bhutan’s construction industry’s accession to the development of technology and professionalism in construction, through successful show casing by CDCL. 17 Construction Development Corporation Limited TASHI DELEK 18
