Every Drop Counts A project by Grade V students of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Thrissur Shared with school communities through "In an age when man has forgotten his origins and is blind even to his most essential needs for survival, water along with other resources has become the victim of his indifference." A public awakening is the eye opener to save water for the future. Teacher and Guide Project Launch Project Introduction in the assembly Brainstorming session in class on ‘Why is water a precious liquid’ Distribution of list of activities and time lines to team members We also showed our class this awesome presentation. You can see it and download it at http://www.slideshare.net/carlosremontti/thirst-presentation-583044 We had discussions on a variety of topics Rainwater harvesting Myths and rituals connected with water Is conservation in our heart?? Dams and multipurpose river valley projects Did some community service It is hot and sultry in Thrissur. Our team of water savers spread the message of water conservation among the devotees who came for the fair and Kavadi in connection with Shivarathri on Feb 23rd. All this, while serving thousands of thirsty devotees clean and cool drinking water The local police helped us get fresh water to give to the people and the public were grateful for this good act of providing the thirsty with fresh cool water. We sent in articles to newspapers and magazines And the steps we are taking in our school Morning Assembly Mime And a pledge to conserve water Bulletin boards Messages at water points Don't let water run while washing your hands or face. NEVER FORGET TO CLOSE THE TAP ONCE YOU ARE DONE OPEN THE TAPS SLOW so that you use just the right amount of water . If you find THE OVERHEAD TANK OVERFLOWING,REPORT to the incharge IMMEDIATELY. USE THE WATER IN THE COOLER ONLY FOR DRINKING. Avoid washing hands or tiffin boxes here. REPORT ANY LEAKS at the water points and toilets USE THE AQUA GUARD PROPERLY. Read the instructions well before using it, to avoid wastage of water. News scan Our group collected news related to water from various newspapers. We prepared a Water News Scan brochure It was presented in the exhibition and is now a part of our resource room. Library research With the help of Mr.Rajanish, our librarian sir, and our teacher Mrs.K.P.Suma, we selected books on the topic "Water".Sir guided us to find out reference material from the encyclopedia using the Index. He gave us many books -My reference library on ecology, Our watery world. ocean life, water for life etc. He also gave us the magic school bus CD on water. We are finding all this very interesting. Online research And what we learnt…. Scores of countries are overpumping aquifers as they struggle to satisfy their growing water needs. More than half the world’s people live in countries where water tables are falling. In India, water shortages are particularly serious simply because the margin between actual food consumption and survival is so precarious. What we learnt… In a survey of India’s water situation, Fred Pearce reported in New Scientist that the 21 million wells drilled are lowering water tables in most of the country. In North Gujarat, the water table is falling by 6 meters (20 feet) per year. In Tamil Nadu, wells are going dry almost everywhere and falling water tables have dried up 95 percent of the wells owned by small farmers, reducing the irrigated area in the state by half over the last decade. We surveyed the water points in our school The taps and flushes Whether they worked? Were they leaking? The school management takes immediate action After a week we surveyed the water points again and what did we find???? That all the leaks were set right. The flush changed in 2 toilets. The cooler was back in working condition We surveyed water use in our neighbourhood And found that most of the water is used in the bath and toilets and the least for drinking Awareness rally in the neighbourhood I interviewed a neighbour who has been staying in this locality for many years. I asked her about the source and availability of water in the locality. 10 years ago she didn't even dream that there will be shortage of water in this locality. They had to dig only 10ft. to get good water. But last year they had to deepen their well to get water. She said that after the flats have come up people are digging only borewells to save space and they make it very deep. So the water level in the area has gone down. Even the quality of water has gone down it not that tasty as it used to be. Ann E Guest lecture on National Science Day And a visit to Peechi dam and water purification plant It was amazing to know the long process water undergoes from the Peechi dam to make it safe for drinking at our homes. We understood that it is real national waste to waste such precious water. A holiday in Dubai gave me some amazing insights… Underground drip irrigation tubes that use recycled water for greening the city Creative hands and minds On MS Paint Model of the Peechi Dam Water conservation efforts in our school Our brochure, with many interesting facts and figures on water, was released during the school assembly We disseminated our work and findings to our friends in school And to parents Let us think and act together Let us make Every Drop Count
