Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Linda Hauser has been deeply involved in education for over 30 years. She currently serves as a Professor at California State University Fresno, Educational Research and Administration, where she teaches both in the Education Administration Master’s Program and Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership. Dr. Hauser served over 28 years in K-12 public education as the Chief Academic Officer for the Fresno Unified School District and as an Area Superintendent, Administrator for Professional Development (K12), elementary school principal, secondary learning director, resource teacher and teacher in the Clovis Unified School District. She has taught numerous grade ranges from primary grade students to the graduate level. Dr. Hauser received her BA in Communicative Disorders (deaf education emphasis) and teaching credential from California State University of Fresno, her MA in Administration and Reading Specialist Certification from Fresno Pacific University and completed a doctorate in Organizational Leadership from the University of LaVerne. 5 Random Selection Stand Identify the district selected Research relative to Student Achievement (e.g. who did you talk to, where did you go for resource documents) Talk about student achievement in your district (How are students doing?) Volunteer time keeper. 6 MENTOR DISCUSSION Discuss with your mentor what they believe is the role of a CBO and the qualities they feel are critical to be successful. Discuss your strengths and the strengths of your mentor. Discuss your aspirations to be a CBO. Ask your mentor what skills you need to acquire or expand to be successful. Discuss student achievement and how they believe a CBO plays a role with the district leadership team in achieving student success. Discuss with them your assignment to talk for two minutes about student achievement. Discuss the relationship between business and curriculum & instruction division. How does business support the instructional side of the house? 7 MENTOR DISCUSSION What is your district revenue limit? Bring to the class a copy of your district revenue limit calculation as presented in the 2nd interim report. Discuss with your mentor where your revenue limit is in relationship to the state wide average for your type of district. Do you know why it is above or below statewide average? 8 Interview Question: “Please tell us about yourself, your education and your experience, as it relates to this position.” Time your response to be under five minutes. Find a partner. Provide your response. Request feedback. Listen to their response. Provide feedback. 9 Written Assignment Prepare a 200 – 300 word summary that describes your district revenue limit funding. Include whether you are above or below the statewide average (and why). Include the percentages of state aid and property tax. Describe it as though you were including the description in a budget document. You will get an opportunity to rewrite this document after listening to class discussion on Saturday. 10 Strengths Our strength exercise forms the basis for many of our leadership and team building activities. (Your district, your mentor’s district, or another district of your choice). User Friendly BUDGET. CD provided. Your job is to complete the User Friendly Budget. Complete all sections of UFB 6.2 for the District/COE of your choice. Review and discuss with your mentor prior to the class. Due by the October class. Be prepared to report out in TWO minutes and two minutes only what you learned about budgeting in CA using UFB during dinner at the October class. Resource for prior year data: http://www.ed-data.k12.ca.us 14 Exercise – Fingertip Facts As a CBO, there are a large number of facts about your district you should know “by heart”. And a large number of facts, that you should have assembled in some type of document for easy access. You will produce your own finger tip fact document for your district by the end of the program. Team starting point: Brainstorm all the things you think should be “facts” about your district that you should have on a fingertip fact document. 15 August Mentor Interview Question Discuss with your mentor the topic of fiscal oversight (AB 1200) and their experiences in working with their county office. Bring a copy of your district 2nd interim approval letter from the county office. Discuss with your mentor strategies relative to cash flow, cash management, cash loans. Interview Question: We understand the need for a reserve for economic uncertainty. However, these are definitely times of great economic uncertainty. What are the conditions whereby use of reserves to balance the budget is acceptable? Note – put interview question answer in writing and post to google site. 16 August Writing Assignment Prepare a 200 – 300 word summary that describes Class Size Reduction Funding in 2010-11. Describe it as though you were including the description in a budget document. 17 August Assignments Leadership assignment – TBD Attend a JPA meeting (workers compensation/property & liability/health and welfare) – not due until January. Start work on your unique “Fingertip Facts”. You will keep adding to this document as the class progresses and your final document is due at the end of the program. 18 Kevin Gordon Budget Update President School Innovation and Advocacy (Bio from SI&A website) Widely viewed as among the top education advocates in California, Mr. Gordon is President of School Innovations and Advocacy. Along with CEO Jeff Williams, Gordon leads our company's efforts to provide the very best services available to school agencies across budget and finance, curriculum and instruction, categorical programs, human resource management, school facilities construction and education technology. The longtime Executive Director of the California Association of School Business Officials (CASBO), Mr. Gordon previously served as the Chief Lobbyist and Assistant Executive Director of the California School Boards Association (CSBA). He has also served as Chief of Staff to Congressman Robert T. Matsui and as a legislative advocate for the California Building Industry Association. He holds a master's degree in public administration from the University of San Francisco. Prior to that, while completing his undergraduate degree in communication studies at University of California, Davis, he was recruited by the IBM Corporation and served three years in its national marketing division for large systems. 19
