What is BYOD? • BYOD is an acronym for Bring Your Own Device. • A “device” is defined as a privately owned laptop, tablet computing device, netbook, notebook, e-Reader, iPod Touch, iPad, or smartphone • For this program, “device” also includes any similar product owned by Alief and provided for student use BYOD Why BYOD? • To expand our students’ 21st Century learning opportunities • To access the internet and understand when and how to use tools appropriately • To harness technology our students use every day for educational purposes • To promote creativity and innovation BYOD Which mobile devices are allowed? • Internet enabled devices that can connect to the district’s wireless network • These devices may include, but are not limited to: – – – – – – – iPod Touch iPad other tablet computing devices smartphones laptops netbook e-Readers with internet access BYOD HNGC BYOD BYOD When will BYOD begin? • All Level 1 teachers • Personal device – Used for instructional purposes only Review AUP RUP / BYOD policy All parent letters returned Classroom procedures in place Signage prepared BYOD Which schools are involved in Phase 1? High Schools: Kerr, HNGC, Elsik Middle Schools: Albright, O’Donnell Intermediate Schools: Budewig, Miller BYOD How will mobile devices be used in the classroom? • • • • • • Projects Research Response device for assessments Collaboration Presentations Other instructionally appropriate and school related purposes BYOD Internet Safety • Always aware; always monitoring • Constant and continual discussions/opportunities • Teach students to – Protect themselves-no identifying info – Protect others- cyberbullying etc. – Protect Intellectual property- citing all sources BYOD What is the expectation for use of mobile devices in my classroom? • Only Level 1 teachers who have attended a BYOD campus training may use a personal device in their classrooms for appropriate instructional purposes only • The teacher determines when use of mobile devices is instructionally appropriate – Not allowed for entertainment within the classroom • Students are responsible for their own mobile devices • Teachers and Students are expected to abide by the AUP/RUP’s . BYOD How will I control which apps are on a student owned device? • You have no control over what apps are on a student’s device • Design lessons around Web 2.0 tools • Student devices must be capable of accessing internet resources BYOD What support will be provided? • Professional learning opportunities will be provided throughout the school year in Eduphoria. • Additional support will be available from your Tech Specialist and Technology Integrator • BYOD website , off the Alief district main page, will provide ongoing support for your classroom BYOD How will my students access the Internet? • Students access the internet through the Alief BYOD wireless network • Students go to Settings/wi-fi and select Alief BYOD> login using their network username & password • This network provides filtered internet access only • All access will be monitored for the purposes of network security and student safety BYOD What are the responsibilities of students? • Read, agree, adhere and return the Alief ISD BYOD Student Parent Agreement • Students are responsible for any data or app charges that are incurred from a service provider • Students are responsible for the safety and use of their own device BYOD What are the responsibilities of students continued? • The Alief BYOD network is provided for appropriate instructional purposes • Students may not use devices in parts of the school designated as “no technology zones” or any other areas where devices are not permitted • No device may be used to record, store, or transmit any type of image, sound or video from Alief, except for approved projects and with the express permission of the teacher BYOD What are the responsibilities of students continued? • The condition of the their device used for BYOD including updates, antivirus software and any repairs • Their device should be brought to school fully charged • The student is fully responsible, at all times, for personal devices brought to school. Alief is not liable for any loss, damage, or theft of personally owned devices BYOD What are the student consequences ? • The student's device may be inspected and/or confiscated • Additional disciplinary action involving misuse of technology may extend to loss of technology privileges • Further action as determined by Alief Student Handbook, Campus Administration and Discipline guidelines. BYOD When Can Students Begin Using their Device in my Classroom? • Devices may be used only after all students and parents/guardians have signed and returned the Responsible Use Agreement. • Teacher will designate when BYOD days are scheduled verbally, through their eChalk class page calendar or “Remind” web tool. BYOD What if a student does not have a device to bring to school? • The District will provide access to the internet via classroom computers and a limited number of mobile devices • Students may collaborate with another student as appropriate BYOD Practical Tips • Check out/in procedures in place for district owned devices • Devices are always off until directed to turn on • Power off, put away • Students never leave their device on a table or loan to another student • Signage-Zone Posters BYOD Make BYOD Understood BYOD #1 Classroom Management Tip: Planned Appropriate Instructional Lesson Signage!
