Evaluating the Field Test Experience
What did we learn?
 We could do it!
 Plan for training well in advance of testing.
 Evaluate training with teachers and administrators, and revise training, or
regroup as needed.
 Test equipment early and check all laptops that will be used for testing at least
one week before online test administration.
 Use the practice and training tests trouble-shoot before test day
 Be sure computers are completely shut off and restarted once a week. Also,
restart the computers the morning of the test.
 The teacher/proctor needs to be very active and circulate around the
classroom or computer lab much of the time.

Evaluating the Field Test Experience –
Some Challenges
 Understanding and selecting the new universal tools, designated supports,
and documented accommodations for ELL and IEP/504 students
 Scheduling the test sessions for the different portions of the ELA and Math
Smarter Balanced field test within school calendars and around other school
events
 Managing Time: Students could work at their own pace since this was an
untimed assessment; some students might finish early while others needed
additional time.
 Equipment Needs: Making sure each school had adequate equipment, for
example, computers, mice, headphones
 Understanding the different portions of the ELA and the Math tests and how
to prepare students for the new assessments

Evaluating the Field Test Experience –
Dealing with Challenges
 The earlier experience with online MSP testing was helpful in many ways.
 IT and Assessment Office staff visited all of the schools to make sure that
everything was in place and all the equipment was set up as required.
 Help from IT and Assessment (whether by phone, email, or in-person) was
available in preparation for, and throughout the testing window.
 Important information was posted online at the Assessment Office website,
which was easy to access and did not require a special login.
 There was strong commitment to ensuring test security .
 Smarter Balanced School Coordinators played an important role - their job
required full-time effort during the test window.
 Training, training, training!

Evaluating the Field Test Experience –
What went Well or Better than Expected

Good experience for the students.

The students were eager to get started on the new assessments and try out all the
online features. They did not appear to be fazed by the new technology.

Teachers and other staff treated all aspects of the field test very seriously – perhaps
to the point of being overly concerned and getting stressed out.

Some of the schools that started testing in one of the earlier testing windows
reported positive experiences with the field test and the new features. They gave the
teachers who hadn’t started the test helpful tips and suggestions.

Once schools had gone through the first day or week of the field testing, things
tended to go very smoothly.

Throughout training, there was good team effort. Cooperation and communication
among school administrators, teachers, and district staff was good.

 The table above shows estimates of the time most students will need to finish.
 Smarter Balanced year-end summative assessments are not timed. Students may
take as much time as they need to complete the tests.
 Testing occurs over multiple sessions.

PRACTICE AND TRAINING TESTS
• The Smarter Balanced Practice and Training tests are available now on the
WCAP portal: http://wa.portal.airast.org/
• The purpose of the practice and training tests is to help students and teachers
become familiar with what the test looks like, the item types, and how to
navigate and use the online features.
• The practice and training tests should not be used to guide classroom
instruction.
• Encourage students to try and answer all questions regardless of the level of
difficulty. If an item seems too difficult, encourage them to select the best
answer using all tools available.

PRACTICE TESTS
• The practice test mirrors the Spring 2015 summative assessment.
• Each grade level includes a variety of question types and difficulty
(approximately 30 items each in ELA and math) and an ELA and math
performance task at each grade level (3–8 and 11).
• All universal tools, designated supports, and accommodations approved
by Smarter Balanced are available on the practice tests. Language
supports - including translated glossaries and stacked Spanish translation are available on mathematics Practice and Training Tests.
•
Some universal tools, designated supports, and accommodations that
were not in the Field Test have been added.

DEFINITIONS
• Universal Tools
– Universal tools are access features of the Smarter Balanced which are available to
all students based on student preference and selection, either embedded in the
software or available as classroom resources. Examples: embedded English
dictionary, classroom English dictionary, embedded notes, scratch paper.
• Designated Supports
– Features that are available for use by any student when the need has been
indicated by an educator (or team of educators with parent/guardian and student).
Examples: embedded glossary, having test directions read by the teacher .
• Documented Accommodations
– Changes in procedures or materials that increase access for students having
documentation requiring accommodations on their Individualized Education
Program (IEP) or 504 accommodation plan. Examples: Closed captioning, Braille,
Read-aloud, Print on Demand, Speech to text.

The ISAAP Tool
• The ISAAP tool is designed to facilitate selection of the Designated
Supports and Accommodations that match student access needs for the
Smarter Balanced assessments, as supported by the Smarter Balanced
Usability, Accessibility, and Accommodations Guidelines.
• The ISAAP Tool should be used in conjunction with the Smarter Balanced
Usability, Accessibility and Accommodations Guidelines and state
regulations and policies related to assessment accessibility.
• ISAAP is somewhat similar to the template which we used last year, but
has some additional features.

REQUIREMENT FOR 3RD GRADE PARENT CONFERENCES
New state requirement for
3rd grade parent conferences based
on Smarter Balanced Assessment scores
Beginning in Spring 2014–15, if a student is “below-basic” (Level 1)
on the 3rd grade ELA Smarter Balanced Assessments, the principal
or designee, teacher and parents are required to meet before the
end of the 2014–15 school year to discuss and agree upon:
• Intensive strategies to improve the student’s reading skills.
• Appropriate grade placement for the student.
