Indian High School, Dubai 2011 Volume 01 Issue No. 04 As the final edition of e-xpressions for this academic year is uploaded, I cannot help but look back with considerable pride and satisfaction. Our endeavours in the year gone by have been acknowledged and commended by one and all. We have embarked on our Golden jubilee year, celebrating the fruition of long cherished goals. While we are justifiably proud of our progress, we cannot afford to be complacent. We all have heard the oft quoted saying ‘The school is a building with four walls and tomorrow inside.’ But hidden in the simplicity of this quote is a profound message. The race for excellence is never ending. I am confident that as long as we have a cohort of students who believe in themselves and hold strong to their values and integrity, we can turn every dream into a reality. Expressing my thoughts to my Golden batch – class of 20102011, ‘we do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.’ This is a famous line from J.K Rowling’ commencement address at Harvard. And I want you to understand the power of your mind – how your thoughts and attitude can make a world of difference. Go students and let the world see the power within you and we will always cherish the footprints you leave at the threshold of the Indian High School, Dubai. The editorial team of e-xpressions wishes all students the very best for your forth coming final examinations and success in all your endeavours. For the next academic year 2011-12, we heartedly welcome your articles, poems, sketches, creative work and photographs clicked by you which speak about your photographic genius. Please confer upon us your knowledge and contributions. The invaders of peace, from the seas, struck, To wage a brutal war against humanity. Not one dreamt in their worst dreams ,but The Taj, Oberoi-Trident, were soon to be gruesome battlefields The innocent victims, Little did they know, That soon, they would be captives of death. The intruders consumed by hatred, fired their weapons To take away God’s precious lives Without a thought fleeing their polluted minds, Barbaric acts they committed, their eyes blurred. A scream of utter helplessness Resounding in the hearts of the unfortunate ones With every gunshot, Many hopes and dreams were swept off Blood, like a river without any value flowed. In horrific violence’s midst, Bravery’s sons, glowing embers, marched forward. Armored with the suit of courage, Pawning their own lives, As a ransom to save the innocent. At long last, bade adieu, the nightmare. Leaving its tragic legacyConsumed lives, broken-hearted souls, orphaned families A sober tale of misery, Echoing through pain’s mourning, sorrow’s fire. Smearing its violent imprint not only in history’s pages but in the heart’s of many, Not a blow to Mumbai alone, but a hit on humanity, it was. With tears clinging on my eyelids, I ask“When will peace & harmony, like a mighty fortress, Emerge from the depths of hatred & violence, Embracing one and all? MY FATHER ALWAYS TEACHES ME TO BE HONEST. ONE DAY WHEN MY PARENTS HAD TO GO OUT OF THE HOUSE, MY FATHER TOLD ME TO FINISH MY HOMEWORK AND NOT TO WATCH TELEVISION. Maya 3F My Day With A Four Year Old The day begins, as books are set Charts put up and homework checked. Its nine and they arrive With that shy, warm and often naughty look in the eye, That seems to say I’m glad you’re here, To hold my hand and soothe my fears. As the day, periodically unfolds Words or lines or stories are told I look expectantly into those eager eyes Searching for signs and answers right. I heave a sigh and look around And answers come in unison. Now it’s time to run and play, Those bubbly, prancing feet seem to say “Don’t tell me to walk, I have to run. You’ve had your say, now’s my time for fun.” It fills my heart with warmth so great To know that I am a teacher by fate. And so I thank you little one, For a world you help create, Full of life and joy and love And those blessings from above. Mrs. Florence Braganza KG.2 Son to Father Why? Can’t I speak my mind? He doesn’t seem to understand, Even though we both try. Our moments of togetherness Are shortened by and by. There were those years, Cherished by us, When everything was shared, Each moment worth a lifetime. When did all that change? To this pretense of false intimacy. Now, silence surrounds us. More than the ghosts of laughter. Our love is deeper, It’ll save us from this disaster. For tomorrow, I shall spend the day, With the greatest man in the world. My idol, my mentor, during the yesteryears. And then we both shall understand That, we never grew apart. Faizan XI Sc. D LES FESTIVALS FRANÇAIS Chaque pays célèbre leurs propres festivals.
