Complete 6th grade in spring and entering 7th grade in fall. 5 one-week sessions in 2014

ADVANCED 2 one-week sessions for girls completing 8th grade in spring 2014 and entering 9th
grade in fall 2014. Girls must have attended the 6th grade Basic STEPS camp to be eligible.
WHAT IS STEPS?
• An opportunity for girls to learn more about what engineers do:
Outstanding instructors with extensive backgrounds in engineering, technology and science,
teach the workshops
• A one-week introduction to the world of technology and engineering.
• A camping experience at the St. Paul Campus of the University of St. Thomas
• A hands-on experience with high-tech equipment and processes
• STEPS camper adjusts the airplane made for the STEPS program.
Program activities:
Include manufacturing and flying a radio controlled airplane.
Students explore science and engineering topics such as physics, chemistry and team building.
There is time for fun!
The camp schedule includes swimming, pizza parties and karaoke. Participants experience
dorm life, cafeteria food and learn what it is like to be on a college campus.
Exploring Careers in Engineering and Physical Science
These week-long sessions sponsored by the University of Minnesota College of
Science and Engineering are for high school students entering grades 9, 10, 11,
and 12. Students attend the camp from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. each day.

Kids' University

Technology Day Camp
• This three-day summer camp explores the wonders of technology, robotics,
and college in general; free, diversity and outreach program

Science Discovery Day Camps at the Bell Museum
• These week-long day camps are led by museum education staff and give
campers the opportunity to meet University scientists and take field trips to
University learning centers
• Topics range from mammals to invertebrates, outer space, the environment
and more
• Hands-on, inquiry-based classroom and laboratory activities, as well as outdoor
exploration and recreation
• Grades K-6

Program Highlights
 Every camper will make and take home his or her own unique project.
 Campers have access to a large variety of materials and tools for project
building.
 There is a very high ratio of staff to students (usually a 1:6 ratio).
 Campers have opportunities to work in small collaborative groups and
individually.
 Campers will exercise their creative thinking skills every day.
 Students will be trained to confidently work with a number of different
tools in the workshop.
 Campers are a part of community of like minded students who all share a
common interest in making and doing.
 Summer camps at The Bakken empower students to take control of their
environment.
 The camp curriculum is focused around the process of invention and
problem solving, skills that can be put to use in all aspects of their life.

Alumni have gone on to pursue STEM careers in science, technology, engineering
and math. Help our kids learn to be engaged and educated citizens to make
responsible, informed decisions that affect us, our society and our environment; we
must understand science and math.

High Tech Kids is committed to introducing the next generation of engineers,
scientists, computer programmers, technicians, policy makers and project
managers to the challenge and promise of STEM (science, technology,
engineering and math).
FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is a robotics competition targeted toward middle and high
school-aged students. It offers the traditional challenge of a FIRST Robotics competition but
with a more accessible and affordable robotics kit.
In September each year, FIRST announces the game challenge to FTC teams at Kickoff. Unlike
FRC, there is no 'ship day' when the robot has to be finished; Teams can work on their robots up
to and during competitions.
Qualifying Tournaments and State Championships occur from October through March, and the
World Championship is held in April.
