• All 23 temporary classrooms are used to calculate
utilization in years 2015-16 to 2017-18.
• Patterson & Stein Pre-K not included in enrollment,
located off-site.
Stein Elementary Current Concerns
• Crowded classrooms and common areas.
• Lack of adequate instructional and intervention space.
• Student and Staff safety.
• Insufficient teacher work area(s).
• Playground, parking, and cafeteria overcrowding.
• Temporary buildings are permanent.
Options Considered
• Build a new ES
– Advantages: Adds additional capacity without impacting current operations
– Challenges: No funds or land to build a new school in the area (not timely)
• Remodel of Stein ES
– Advantages: Adds capacity to highly performing school
– Challenges: Inability to construct without major disruption to current operations
and lack of funds (not timely)
• Add 6th Grade to O’Connell Middle School
– Advantages: Provides immediate relief for multiple schools (timely)
– Challenges: Required to offer busing to another school due to Turn-around status
of OMS; does not solve Stein issues; negative impact on smaller elementary
schools
• K-8 at O’Connell Middle School
– Advantages: potential to provide some relief to schools; minimal disruption
– Challenges: too small of K-6 program to provide relief and effective programming
Proposed Plan
• Creating a new International Baccalaureate Primary
Years Program elementary school in the Alameda area.
• Combining the International Baccalaureate Middle
Years Program (MYP), which serves students in grades
7 through 10, into a single site on the Alameda
International High School campus.
• Moving all 11th and 12th graders, including the
International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (DP), to a
separate wing on the Alameda International High
School campus.

academic focus
– School Wide Title plan will focus on math.

will continue to be our focus as the implementation of close
reading has resulted in improvement in literacy scores, as
demonstrated in TCAP and ACT.
• Teacher collaboration, using data to inform teaching and
learning are all requirements of the IB MYP.
• Evaluating the next steps for Dual Language and the biliteracy seal
Draft: Support Resources

High School Students Insight
Benefits of 7-12 Proposal
Concerns of 7-12 Proposal
• The elimination of the hard 9th
grade transition, earlier adoption
of good high school habits
• Teachers would know students
better personally and
academically
• Teachers can work together more
• More opportunities for students
who wanted to try harder classes
including electives
• 7th and 8th grade classes would
mean more, kids would take
them more seriously
• Better transportation for families
• Older siblings can keep an eye on
younger siblings
• Immaturity of 7/8th graders
• Would their lower academic
expectations bring us down?
• What would happen with the
teachers? There are good
teachers at both schools.
• Would our classes get bigger?
• Influence of older students could
be good or bad
• Would there be the same
behavior expectations for all
grades?
• Some students might move to
another school
