De Oezbeekse producent en zakenman Mirsobir Khamidkariev werd net zolang gemarteld
totdat hij extremistische daden ‘bekende’. Hij werd tot 8 jaar gevangenisstraf
veroordeeld.
In 2010 beschuldigden de Oezbeekse autoriteiten Mirsobir Khamidkariev van het oprichten van een
islamitische terreurgroep – wat hij ten stelligste ontkent. Khamidkariev vluchtte naar Rusland en
vroeg daar asiel aan.
Afgelopen juni werd hij echter in Moskou opgepakt en naar Oezbekistan gebracht. Twee maanden
lang werd hij gemarteld, totdat hij aanklachten bekende die volgens zijn advocaat vals zijn. Op 20
november werd Khamidkariev veroordeeld. Zijn advocaat was er niet bij, want Khamidkariev was
twee dagen eerder dan gepland naar de rechtbank gebracht.
Onze oproep

We spreken tegenover de procureur-generaal onze zorg uit dat het proces tegen Mirsobir
Khamidkariev oneerlijk was.

Daarnaast vragen we om een onderzoek naar marteling en vervolging van de daders
daarvan.

Dear Prosecutor General,
On 18 November Mirsobir Khamidkariev, a producer and businessman from Uzbekistan, was
sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment on extremism charges following what appears to have
been an unfair trial. There are credible allegations that he was tortured in detention in Tashkent,
Uzbekistan.
I am concerned that the hearing that took place on 18 November was conducted in violation of the
international fair trial standards, as specified by the International Covenant on Civil and Political
Rights, including Article14(3), to which Uzbekistan is a state party.
I call on the Uzbek authorities to initiate a prompt, impartial and effective investigation into the
allegations that Mirsobir Khamidkariev was tortured and ill-treated in custody.
Subsequently, I urge you to bring to justice any police officer or state actor found responsible for
torturing and ill-treating Mirsobir Khamidkariev.
