Biogeochemical: Sulfur Cycle By: Diana Ramirez, Catalina Calderon, Joanna Lopez, & Yamilex Milian What is sulfur? A non metallic element that can be in different forms, usually a yellow solid, burns in only blue flame, and suffocating odor. It is found in proteins, amino acid cysteine, enzymes, and gives a distinctive order to many substances. Sulfur cycle steps: o Sulfur is released into atmosphere as sulfur dioxide by volcanic eruptions, bacterial-byproduct sea spray releases, human activity of burning fossil fuels. o The sulfuric acid falls back to earth through rain in terrestrial & aquatic. o Sulfur falls to bottom of ocean and geological activity mixes the minerals and ends up back at the beginning of the cycle. In the process, acid precipitation can occur. Where acid rain appears in the cycle? • Compounds return to land, from the atmosphere, as dry particles or dissolved in the precipitation, such as rain or snow. • Winds can propel these compounds which makes it an international problem. What’s wrong with acid rain? • Too much sulfuric acid in rain is the main cause of acid rain, which lowers pH of soils, lakes and rivers. • Normal rain fall has pH of 5.6 • Acid Rain has pH of below 5.6 Effects of acid rain • Acid damages productivity of plants and the organisms in ecosystems. • Damage to fish aquatic organisms such as most fish eggs do not hatch. • Soil is damaged because their microbes are unable to tolerate low pH and are killed.
