TOURNAMENT GUIDE
INTRODUCTION
WELCOME
The road to 2014 and the celebration of the 400 year jubilee of the Groningen State University.
In 2009 the University of Groningen (RUG) celebrated its 395 year existence. I remember very well that already then we spoke about the grand jubilee five years later.
Would it not be challenging if ……?
In the years thereafter the Groningen Chess Festival flourished and highlights
founded the reputation of an interesting tournament for young, talented and
(inter)national chess players. This festival with a long tradition was living up to the
slogan: “Groningen, City of Talent.”
It will not be easy to surpass the tournament of 2013 which was very special, also
because of the exiting match between Jan Timman and Anatoly Karpov in the
Groninger Museum on the occasion of the Netherlands-Russia Year.
But we are not in competition with ourselves. For 2014 we have chosen to involve
students as representatives of related universities. ‘Celebrating by giving’ is the motto
by which the RUG makes it possible to present a broad international participation. We
thank the RUG for this gesture. As a result of this student ‘expansion’ more youth
than ever is taken part in the festival, which makes it a remarkable edition.
The City of Chess Groningen Foundation’s ambition is the continuation of the
Tradition to organize a Tournament in the Christmas period for Top players, a
Terrace for Talent and Time to come. Something to be (T)proud of. Or as Hans
Böhm, ambassador of the Foundation, says; “TinTinnabulaTing TournamenT”. We
are convinced that our mission will be accomplished.
With trust we will hand over the organization to our successors in the coming year.
Groningen has enough experts to uphold this long tradition of a highly qualitative
tournament.
The City of Chess Groningen Foundation will focus on the promotion of this sport
aiming at the youth and on the development of talent within dedicated chess schools.
It will also enhance connections with art and cultural activities. This approach already
will be visible during the 2014 festival. For instance as part of the Winter Welfare
manifestation and by means of various cultural festivities during the after chess
program. A highlight of this new approach takes place
during the official opening on December 18th, when a
bronze statue will be presented to Prof. Dr. S.
Poppema, president of the Groningen State University,
a longtime promoter of the tournament and
ambassador of chess. This statue enriches not only the
State University but also the City of Groningen with
an original piece of art, winking at chess.
The road to the 2014 edition comes to an end. Let’s
celebrate together.
Dear chess friends,
Welcome to the Chess Festival Groningen in our wonderful town, the capital of
the North. I hope that you are ready for our traditional chess tournament.
As you may know, 2014 is a very special year for The University of Groningen,
as we are celebrating our 400th anniversary. Because of our anniversary, and
because of the long-lasting and close collaboration between our university and
the Chess Festival organization, we have added a special dimension to this 2014
Chess edition, for we have invited 60 highly-qualified students from our international partner universities as special participants.
Sports events are important for social cohesion and human wellbeing. Our
Sports Centre offers a perfect environment for a chess tournament. At the
Sports Centre, students can not only work out physically by doing a variety of
sports, but they can also train their so called ‘soft skills’ in communication and
team building, skills that are indispensable for their future careers and personal
lives.
I am proud to say that the University of Groningen has excellent facilities in
place for top athletes. This, among other things, has contributed to the
outstanding results of our Olympic Medal winner and World Champion Epke
Zonderland (horizontal bars) and Roel Boomstra, the European Draughts
Champion.
I hope you will enjoy the tournament and the social
and cultural activities that have been organized for
you to the full. Make new friends, discover the
University and the City of Groningen.
Prof. dr. Sibrand Poppema, president,
University of Groningen
Jan Colly,
chairman of the City of Chess Groningen Foundation

THE GIFT TO THE UNIVERSITY
The City of Chess Groningen Foundation is proud and very grateful for the
support troughout the years given by the Municipality Board and the State
University Groningen that helped us to keep the traditional Chess Festival
alive. The tournament has a strong reputation, both nationally and internationally for the participation of talented young players.
The 400 year Jubilee of the Groningen University gives us an excellent
opportunity to show our gratitude for the longstanding
support.
This special year a crowd funding activity resulted in the
making of a piece of art that represents the connectivity of the
University and the City, with a clear wink to chess. It is a
present to the University celebrating its year of birth: a bronze
statue.
The pictures below show the artist at work and the final result.
This initiative has been made possible by a number of anonymous gifts and the
persons and institutions named below. We express our deepest thanks to all for
contributing to the original piece of art that enriches Groningen.

CHESS PSYCHOLOGY
Chess has a lot to do with psychology.
The science of the brain has many
practical implications for chess. How
do we process information, how is
our self-management and how do we
learn and train?
In the lecture ‘Chess talent’ Karel
van Delft presents a lot of practical
aspects and examples. The lecture will
be in English. Topics are perception,
self-management, talent development,
learning, coaching, creativity, communication, organisation, physical aspects, role of parents, didactics, school
chess, highly gifted, clothing and social chess (for people with handicaps).
The lecture takes two parts of 45
minutes with a break. After this there
is more than one hour to ask questions and discuss matters. Questions
can also asked beforehand via mail to
karel@kvdc.nl.
Karel van Delft is chess teacher for
youth, coach, psychologist and journalist. He wrote several books and
articles about chess and psychology.
In English he published with his son
IM Merijn van Delft the book Developing Chess Talent, with a foreword by
GM Artur Yusupov. The book is
about training, coaching, communication and organisation. It contains e.g.
an analysis questionnaire and interviews with GM David Bronstein and
GM Jan Timman.
On the site www.chesstalent.com
one can find a video in which IM
Merijn van Delft presents the book.
CHESS FESTIVAL GRONINGEN 2014
On this site also are some items, e.g.
about didactics, nutrition, the article
The seventeenth chess piece and 32
videos of trainings of IM Mark Dvoretsky and GM Artur Yusupov in
Apeldoorn.
Participants of the lecture get a free
ebook copy of the book in English,
and can also get a free hard copy of
the Dutch original book.
Information in English about chess
and autism is available via
www.schaken-en-autisme.nl/englishspanish.
In Dutch Karel van
Delft published the
books Schaaktalent
ontwikkelen, Het
zeventiende schaakstuk,
Schaakideeën and Ik leer
schaken. Recently he
published Schoolschaken. This book on school chess is
about didactics, organisation, research
about benefits of chess as education
tool as well as about chess for children with handicaps.
Karel van Delft writes articles on
the site of the Max Euwe Centrum.
Besides he coordinates the Facebook
group Schaakpsychologie.
His Dutch site is www.schaaktalent.nl.
In the weblog of this site Karel van
Delft writes about his chess experiences. But there is much more. E.g.

THE UNIVERSITY OF GRONINGEN CHESS CHALLENGES
GM Dimitri Reinderman
Dimitri Reinderman (42) was born on
August 12th 1972. He started playing
chess at an early age and showed
some pretty good results in the
nineties. In this decade he be became
an international grandmaster, and in
1992 he shared the 2nd place in the
European Youth Championship
under 20 and the 3rd place in the
World Youth Championship in the
same age category. Together with his
9½ out of 11 in the 1998 Hoogovens B
these achievements are perceived by
Dimitri as his best results. His golden
medal at the fifth board at the 1999
European Team championship clearly
holds lesser value to him.
In 2007 Reinderman decided to
become a chess professional. After
participating many times in the Dutch
championship his first place in the
2013 edition was well earned. His Elo
reached a nice 2619 in 2014 and apart
from playing chess Dimitri recently
became very active in quite a different
branch: the development and presentation of pop quizzes. One of these
quizzes will be a side event of the
Chess Festval 2014. Furthermore he is
One of the highlights of the Chess
Festival Groningen 2014 will be the
two Invitation matches, both between
rising Dutch youth talents and
established (grand)masters. These
University of Groningen Chess
Challenges will take place from 22th
up to and including 29th
December (see our Program on page 5
for the exact schedules).
After the beautiful struggle Jan
Timman vs Robin van Kampen in
2009, the two matches in 2011 (Hans
Ree - Jorden van Foreest and Martine
Middelveld - Anna Maja Kazarian),
the match John van der Wiel - Jorden
van Foreest in 2012 and the Frisian
clash between Jan Werle and dutch
youth champion Nick Maatman, this
year even two matches have been
staged.
Thus the Schaakstad Groningen
foundation once again meets one of
its objectives: to stimulate and
facilitate the development of young
talented chess players.

Jorden van Foreest
Jorden van Foreest (14), chess
prodigy, is the oldest son in a family
of six, all fully dedicated to chess. He
plays in the Dutch Meesterklasse
League with the his new club SISSA,
usually on the first board.
In the Chess Festival Groningen he
already played two 4-game matches
against John van der Wiel and Hans
Ree. Both matches ended in clear
defeats for the youngster but also
taught him valuable lessons. Together
with his increasing chess strength this
might result in very interesting 6game match against Dutch GM and
former Dutch champion Dimitri
Reinderman.
Jorden expects long games, because
Reinderman is known for his calm
opening play and avoidance of piece
exchanges. This means concentration
until the very end of every game.
As compared to his last matches
Jorden’s victory chances increased. He
gained more than 200 Elo points in
2014 nearing the 2500 mark, won a
tournament in Mallorca and also
scored his 3rd IM-norm, now striving
for GM-norms in 2015.
His preparation for the match was
psychological as well as chess technical. His expectations of the match
can be summed up three quotes:
“fighting chess”, “a nice match”, and
“I’ll give every inch…”.
Dimitri Reinderman better comes well
prepared.
an ardent Magic the Gathering player
and ‘likes to stroke his cats’. On the
outcome of the match he does not
have a clear view. He knows Van
Foreest already drew against a few
grandmasters, so Jorden is not to be
underestimated.
sterke grootmeesters. Twee keer remise
tegen Erwin l'Ami, laatst remise tegen
Nigel Short... hij kan zich dus goed
optrekken aan sterke spelers. Het
worden vast leuke partijen!
Hoeveel tijd ik momenteel aan
schaken besteed? Nou,. minimaal 1225
leiden is.

In Isle of Man
wist ik bijvoorbeeld in Isle of Man
remise tegen voormalig wereldkampioen uitdager Nigel Short te
spelen.
In

blijven. Ik ga er daarom vanuit--en
hoop het ook--dat deze match zal
bestaan uit lange partijen met veel
vechtschaak.

TOURNAMENT GUIDE
THE UNIVERSITY OF GRONINGEN LADIES CHALLENGES
Elisabeth Paehtz
Germany’s no. 1 female player didn’t
have to look far for early coaching.
Her father, Thomas Paehtz, was a
grandmaster who on three occasions
tied for first at the German (or East
German) Championship. Elisabeth
herself won the German U11 Championship aged 9, became the youngest
ever "adult" German Champion in
1999 and went on to crown her junior
achievements by winning the World
U18 and U20 titles.
Paehtz earned the Women’s Grandmaster title in 2001 and the overall
International Master title in 2004. She
had a baptism of fire when she played
for Germany as a 13-year-old at the
1998 Olympiad (1 win, 5 losses) and
has gone on to play in every event
since, leading the team on first board
since 2006. Her best performance was
in 2010, when she scored 4 wins, 5
draws and 0 losses. She spent some
time as a coach of the Turkish Chess
Federation’s junior teams and has
been critical of a lack of support from
the German Chess Federation.
CHESS FESTIVAL GRONINGEN 2014
Elisabeth Paehtz (Germany, 29 years
young) with an Elo in the 2400 range
is what one calls a chess prodigy, a
female one. She learned chess at an
early stage, and especially the tactical
side of it as her father is a ruthless
player. She is already 13 years a
Woman IGM and since a few years
also an IM. IGM would be nice: It is a
kind of goal “but it will not change
my life in case I wont reach it”.
She met her match opponent only
once over the board in a Tata Steel
tournament. It was a draw, but Anne
struck her as an ambitious and fearless player. Maybe her experience
counts as an advantage in the upcoming match. Groningen will be new
to her as she only visited the
Netherlands once in 2012 and our city
was not in her schedule then. She
liked the nature and fell in love with
Amsterdam.
Some extensive sports should bring
her back in shape for the match. As
she will also play the World Mind
Games in China in December. And, of
course she wants to win the match.

actual strength is. A rating is just an
indication. I only see my advantage
mainly in experience. It is hard to
predict what kind of games we will play
as I do not have myself a real preference
between tactical or strategical fights. I
guess it will be a matter of daily mood,
at least in my case.
Lately I mainly study openings and
do tactical exercises. Between 20102012 I finished a higher education as a
foreign language correspondent but
eventually I decided not to work in that
field, as I cannot imagine to find myself
in an office 8 h each day:).
I worked with my dad mainly in
childhood until the age of 16. I mainly
got the tactical skills from him as he
was himself a quite attacking and
ruthless player.I think I’m on my best
concerning flexibility in style and
choice of openings plus a general good
understanding of structures...
Become a GM is a kind of goal but it
will not change my life in case I won’t
reach it.
I used to work with many children in
2011 in Turkey and now only once a
year in our home training camp. For
me it is important to understand their
psychology, fears and wishes. Once you
‘learned’ that it is easy to motivate or
stabilize them. There is no general
receipt of motivation, it differs from
child by child.
I have never been to Groningen. I
visited Holland basically only in 2012
and I liked the country. Nice nature,
good for bysicling and I have to confess,
I fell in love with Amsterdam:).”

“I am expecting an interesting fight
and a rather close result. Of course I
would like to win the match as I am the
higher rated and more experienced
player from both of us.
Since I will have a pretty rough
schedule in December, playing the
World Mind Games in China and
returning in a rather tired state back
home I will surly do some extensive
sports and try to regain my energy
before start of the match. Technically
preparation will be most likely tactics
and some study of openings based on
her games.
I know Anne of course, saw her in
many events like Olympiads etc. However we only faced each other once in
2012 during the C-tournament in Wijk
an Zee. I remember she caught me in
some theoretical line and I had to suffer
quite a while before I could finally
manage to escape into a draw. Anna
seems to me a very ambitious and
fearless player, however I haven't
studied her games too deeply yet to be
sure what kind of style she has. In her
young age it is hard to say what her

Anne Haast (21) isn’t new to the
Groningen Chess Festival. A few
years ago she scared every opponent
with her aggressive and willful play.
Ever since she played many international tournaments. A second place
as a 16-year old in the 2009 EC-youth
championship is one of her best
achievements. Her play matured.
Membership of the Dutch female
squad in the last two Olympiads
resulted in a golden medal for best
board performance in the first one.
Everybody knew: this is a star still
rising. In her last Olympiad performance in Tromso she once again did
not disappoint. She scored a WGMnorm. Earlier this year she became
Woman Champion of the Netherlands
and in September she fell only 6 Elopoints short of the Top-100 on the
FIDE-list.

She tries to promote female chess.
Together with Bianca Muhren and
Tea Lanchava she forms the loosely
knit Chess Queens. In the world
renowned Tata Steel Chess Tournament she will play in the Tata Steel
Challengers group as the lowest rated
player…but still.
And her future… ?! Have we seen a
Anne Haast at her peak? Her match
with the higher rated Elisabeth Paehtz
will be a good test.
CHESS FESTIVAL GRONINGEN 2014
Elisabeth en ik hebben één keer
eerder tegen elkaar gespeeld, namelijk
in 2012 in de C-groep van Tata. Na een
verrassing in de opening van mijn kant
ontstond een ongeveer gelijke stelling
die later ook in remise eindigde.
Ik verwacht spannende partijen
waarin we er allebei vol voor gaan!
Afgelopen zomer heb ik een
topzomer gehad en daardoor komen
allerlei uitnodigingen binnen. Dat geeft
mij de mogelijkheid om mezelf verder te
ontwikkelen en daar ben ik natuurlijk
erg blij mee.
Naast het schaken ben ik bezig met
mijn laatste jaar aan de PABO.
Momenteel probeer ik de recente
toernooien te volgen en mijn tactiek op
pijl te houden. De komende tijd ga ik
intensiever aan de slag.

A SHORT PREVIEW OF THE OPEN A
FIFTY-TWO YEARS OF INTERNATIONAAL CHRISTMAS CHESS IN GRONINGEN
At this moment, two weeks to go towards the Chess Festival Groningen
2014, the participants list of the Open A
group promises to break all records. The
number of players in posession of a FIDE
title approaches the fifties, among which
up to 20 grandmasters (IGM) and 25
IM’s. In the archives one has to turn
back to the 1990’s to find higher amounts
of title holders. And they could have
been even more, if it wasn’t for the the
mere fact that due the ongoing economical crisis the Groningen festival too
has to cope with decreasing sponsor
budgets. Still, the Chess Festival
Groningen has improved its position on
the ranking list of international Dutch
tournaments to a second place. Tata Steel
has to watch out...
In the 2014 more than ever the
composition of the Open A has a major
feature: we traditionally focus on
inviting and facilitating talented Dutch
youth players. Again a group of some 20
ambitious youngsters is staying on
boatel the Mars, where they are coached
by a set of professional trainers, in
cooperation with the Dutch Chess
Federation.

THE SCHAAKSTAD GRONINGEN FOUNDATION
Stichting Schaakstad Groningen (the official Dutch name, which also can be
translated as City of Chess Groningen foundation) was founded in 2007. Its
main objective was to ensure the annual tradition of a major international chess
event in Groningen during the Christmas holidays. Historically, the tournament
was known as Niemeijer, Gasunie, Koop Tjuchem and Harmonie tournament,
but the new foundation chose the name Chess Festival Groningen, in order to
fit in with the themes the city of Groningen chooses to profile itself internationally. The title of the series of tournament books released since 2009 Grandmasters in Groningen - a chess festival with tradition and future in the
City of Talent, underlines our intentions.
Together with our partners listed on the next page, for the 7th consecutive year
we managed to connect top-level chess with (inter)national and regional talent.
The Chess Festival intends also to provide an opportunity for less talented
chess players to have a perfect Christmas vacation.
We also focus on encouraging and supporting initiatives that lead to the
provision of chess lessons in primary schools in the province of Groningen,
preferably within the curriculum during school hours. These courses are based
on the chess variant Raindropchess* and the internationally well known
Stappenmethode.
In the coming years we face the challenge of connecting the promotion of
Groningen as City of Talent, to the new themes Groningen incorporates to
promote itself: Energy and Healthy Aging.
