CHOICES AND ACTIONS Q1 PT AND SI STUDENTS YEAR 1 2014-2015 Maartje van de Ven, study advisor/policy advisor PT/SI 06-10-2014 m.v.d.ven@tue.nl 1 CHOOSE A SPECIALIZATION For your information. Specializations of SI: Living (Dutch), Smart Systems, Energy English, Energie NL (Dutch) Specializations of PT: Living (Dutch), Robotics, ICT Each specialization has 4 different (technical) courses in the Bachelor program. All other courses in your PT or SI Bachelor program are the same. The 4 courses of the specializations of Energy NL and Energy English also differ! The 4 technical courses of the Energy NL track are from the Mechanical Engineering faculty and the 4 courses of the Energy English track are mostly from the Electrical Engineering faculty. The first different technical course starts this year in Q3. Please find below the 4 technical courses in your bachelor program per specialization. How do I have to submit my chosen specialization? First choose your two electives of 1.2. and 1.4. and a Physics variant. After doing that you can submit all your choices at once. How and when? Please find this at ‘Submit choices and register courses’ later in this document. I still don’t know what specialization I want to do. What can I do? -Check again the presentations given at the information meetings of 30 September (SI) and 2 October (PT). If you click on the ‘blue’ words in the texts on the following websites, these presentations will appear. SI: http://studiegids.tue.nl/bachelorcollege/majors/sustainable-innovation/curriculum/coaching/2014-2015/ and PT: http://studiegids.tue.nl/bachelor-college/majors/psychologytechnology/curriculum/coaching/2014-2015/. • • • • -Think about what major you would have chosen/are most interested at the TU/e if it wasn’t PT or SI: Would it be Architecture/Building? Then you can think about Living. Would it be Mechanical Engineering? Then Energie NL is maybe the best option. Would it be Electrical Engineering? Then Energy English or Robotics can be nice. Or would it be Software/Web science? Then you can think about the ICT track. -Talk (once again) with your teacher coach about your doubts. At 06-10-2014 I emailed you a list in which you can find your teacher coach (and student mentor). Your teacher coach will contact you to arrange a meeting to talk about this! If you can’t get any contact with your teacher coach please inform me (m.v.d.ven@tue.nl). -Talk to the students from year 2, 3 or 4 of SI/PT about their experiences with their specialization. Can I change my specialization after Q2? Yes, but take care of the consequences. See next. What are the consequences if I switch to another specialization after Q2? 3 -First let the Onderwijsadministratie-IEIS@tue.nl know to which specialization you want to switch. NB. Enclose again your name, PT or SI and student number. As you could read earlier in this document the first to a specialization related course starts in 1.3. This means that if you switch to another specialization after the start of Q3 you still have to do the technical course (of 1.3.) that is related to your ‘new’ specialization. -Have you obtained the technical course related to your old specialization (in 1.3.) already? Then this course will be ‘transformed’ to an elective course for you. That means you have to fill in one elective less in your bachelor. Email the Onderwijsadministratie-IEIS@tue.nl if you want to ‘transform’ the technical course into an elective. NB. Enclose your name, major and student number. -Further you may have done another physics variant (more information about the Physics variants are described below) that wasn’t recommended for the specialization you switch to. Then you have to learn (by self study) the missed knowledge of the Physics variant of your ‘new’ specialization. You don’t have to do an exam in Physics again though. It’s just recommended to learn the Physics part you have missed in order to be able to keep up with specific other courses. If you can’t find on OASE (Physics) how and what to ‘self study’, please email me (m.v.d.ven@tue.nl). CHOOSE THE ELECTIVES OF YEAR 1 (1.2. AND 1.4.) For your information. The information mentioned under the bullets below can be useful for your information when choosing your 2 electives of year 1 but take into account that you will get much more information about it in semester 2 of this year, so don’t worry if you don’t understand it totally yet. The deadline for choosing what’s mentioned under the bullets is only 15-05-2015. So in general you don’t have to do anything else with this information yet than reading it. In your bachelor you have to choose a total of 9 electives (45 ects). If you choose a minimum of 25 ects of coherent elective packages (each coherent package has 3 (sometimes 4) courses/electives (an Exploration course, a Specialized course and a Project course), then no motivation or coherency check by the Exam Committee is needed. With other words, when choosing 25 ects or more of coherent packages then that will always be approved by the Exam committee if it fits your schedule and if you don’t miss prerequisites/voorkennis. See also http://studiegids.tue.nl/en/bachelor-college And http://studiegids.tue.nl/en/bachelor-college/electives/ And the PlanApp: https://planapp.tue.nl/ (doesn’t work properly yet ) NB: you don’t need to advise the PlanApp in this stage of your study yet! If you want to (and the app seems to work properly) but you can’t figure out how it works please ask your student mentor to help you. Important: click on 2013-2014 (and NOT on 2014-2015. A minimum of 15 ects of technical electives/one technical package is required. Technical courses are all deepening packages All course codes with 2xxxx – 8xxxxx A maximum of 30 ects (6 courses) of level 1 is allowed. You have to choose 1 USE learning line. 3 USE courses, 15 ects 4 starts in Y2 10 USE learning lines available What is the deadline for choosing the electives of 1.2 and 1.4? 16-10-2014! Is there a GENERAL list available of electives for 1.2. and 1.4. that fit my schedule and have no further requirements such as prerequisites (voorkennis) or clashes with my other courses I have to follow? Yes, with regard to PT please find below the lists of electives that you can choose and that fit your schedule. With regard to SI please check the following lists of SI but check the last column more carefully because some of these electives don’t suit the program of all of you because of overlap, prerequisites or clashes with timeslots of other SI courses. Further you can Check OASE to read more information per course. Relevant electives for 1.2. Psychology and Technology NB. Or you can get a broader technical perspective: 2WF20 Linear Algebra 1 (Q2): can be useful for many data science projects 5XCA0 Fundamental of Electronics (Q2): to understand electronics better) 1BK00 Healthcare information systems (Q4) Alternatively, Q2 and Q4 offer chances for interesting cross disciplinary development: 2WH10: The effectiveness of Mathematics (Q2; technical) 0SV10: Technology in society: introduction (Q2) 1ZV30 Product Innovation processes (Q4) 0HK00: Sport motivation and sport performance (Q4) DG3K0: User Focus Basics (Q4) DG1K0: From Idea to Concept (Q4) PT Living 1.2. and 1.4. interesting electives • 7T2X0: Bouwtechniek/Uitvoeren/Detailleren (Q2; technical) • 7U4X0: Realiseren, beheren en transformeren (Q4 ; technical) Alternatively, Q2 and Q4 offer chances for interesting cross disciplinary development • 2IS80: Fundamentals of informatics (Q2; technical) • 2IT60: Logic and set theory (Q2; technical) • 2WH10: The effectiveness of Mathematics (Q2; technical) • 2WF20: Lineaire algebra 1 (Q2; technical) • 0SV10: Technology in society: introduction (Q2) • 2WF30: Lineaire algebra 2 (Q4; technical) • DG3K0: User Focus Basics (Q4) • DG1K0: From Idea to Concept (Q4) Recommended electives per specialization, Sustainable innovation SI Energy English We advise 5XCA0 Fundamentals of Electronics as elective in Q1.2. It is a good course for orientation in the field of Electrical Engineering; if it is different than you expect, you might change your specialization before Q1.3. Please take into account the following. • If choosing 5XCA0 in 1.2. 9 5XCA0 in 1.2. can be chosen instead of the obligatory course 5ECB0 Electronic Circuits 1 in 2.3. in the program of SI Energy English. If you want to do 5XCA0 you have to ask approval of the Exam Committee (send an email to examencommissie.is@tue.nl). If you will pass 5XCA0 the consequence is that you are not allowed to do 5ECB0 Electronic Circuits of 2.3. anymore (because of overlap)! The gap in 2.3. can be filled with another elective then. • If choosing another elective in 1.2. If you choose another elective than 5XCA0 you still have to do 5ECB0 in 2.3. Please take into account that you will have to learn extra background knowledge available by the lecturer of the course and that means extra effort/time. SI Energy-NL 3DEX0 Fysica van nieuwe Energiebronnen (part of elective package Energy, relevant for MSc SET) SI Smart Systems 2IT60 Logic and Set Theory (prior knowledge for many ICT courses) SI Living 7T2X0 Bouwtechniek, uitvoeren, detailleren I want to choose other electives than already mentioned. Are there other electives and is it possible to choose other electives? Yes, you can have a look at http://studiegids.tue.nl/en/bachelor-college/electives/az-electives/ (concept) and click on a package you think you like. Then more information appears as well as details about the courses that make the package. Check the timeslots and prerequisites! Further you can try to advise the PlanApp (https://planapp.tue.nl/ see also what is mentioned above about the plan app) by first selecting your major, specialization and 2013-2014 (NOT 2014-2015) and then click on subjects and search. A list of electives appear. Further please read and take into account the following question about the ‘not allowed electives’! Are there electives I can’t choose/am not allowed to choose? Yes! Please check the files ‘not allowed electives (overlap) for PT at http://studiegids.tue.nl/bachelor-college/majors/psychologytechnology/curriculum/ and for SI at http://studiegids.tue.nl/bachelor-college/majors/sustainableinnovation/curriculum/coaching/2014-2015/. I really still don’t know which electives I want to choose. What can I do now? Don’t worry too much about which elective you want to do. If you really don’t know which one to choose just choose electives out of the list of relevant electives (see above). As mentioned earlier it’s only in semester 2 of this year that you have to choose packages, electives and use learning lines and plan the rest of your bachelor program. In some situations it is useful though to choose a specific elective in 1.2. or 1.4. but that was already mentioned in in this document. 10 To what master programs can I go directly after my bachelor program? Do I have to meet some requirements if I want to a MSc program without having to do a premaster program before starting the MSc program? Please check the following website for more information per subsequent (aansluitende) Master program about this. Look for PT at http://studiegids.tue.nl/en/bachelor-college/majors/psychologytechnology/subsequent-masters/ and for SI at http://studiegids.tue.nl/en/bachelorcollege/majors/sustainable-innovation/subsequent-masters/ How can I submit my electives for q2 and q4? See ‘Submit choices and register courses’. CHOOSE A PHYSICS VARIANT (A, B OR C) OF Q2 Which variant of physics is recommended to do? That depends on your chosen specialization. PT: please register on OASE for: Social Psychology & Consumer Behavior 0HV30 Physics (see above your specific Physics variant/course code) Elective 1.2. What is the deadline for registration? 19-10-2014! Can I deregister myself for a course/elective? Yes, but that is only possible before the start of a new quartile (see OASE for deregistering). Only when having special circumstances you can register and submit 12 yourself for another course/elective in that quartile after the deadline of registration when you have permission of the Education Board of our faculty and when the course you want to switch to is not already full. Email me if you think this is applicable (m.v.d.ven@tue.nl). SUBMIT THE REFLECTION FORM For your information. The completed reflection form is input for the meeting with your coach and is an obligatory part of the professional skills you need to do successfully. You will receive the form by email if you don’t already have received it. What do I have to do with regard to the reflection form? Please complete the following steps after you have received the reflection form by email. Fill in the form Submit the form to Reflectionforms.PT@tue.nl (PT) or Reflectionforms.SI@tue.nl (SI) with cc to your teacher coach. Your teacher coach will discuss the form with you.
