NSF Perspectives Presentation at the US THORPEX-Legacy Planning Meeting June 5-6 2014 1 Key points • US science community needs to organize. What are your priorities? What are your best science plans? • Hazards SEES and PREEVENTS are possible “homes” for your proposals • We support the goals of NOAA’s WRN • Support community models and data assimilation • Opportunity within AGS: VSO • Exploring concept of and requirements for a universitybased, real-time ensemble forecast system • AGS Goals and Objectives 2 PREEVENTS (Prediction and Resilience against Extreme EVENTS) • In many respects, extreme events is at the heart of what GEO supports (e.g., earthquakes, volcanoes, tornadoes, floods, abrupt climate change, permafrost thawing, drought, land slides, tsunami, etc.). • Possible partners – other agencies, and other NSF Directorates • Currently supporting SEES Hazard. PREEVENTS will be the follow on program 3 Opportunities within AGS and NSF • AGS Dear Colleague Letter – NSF/NCEP Visiting Scientist DCL is published: • http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2013/nsf13117/nsf13117.jsp • NSF solicitations – Solicitation due dates: • http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_list.jsp?org=NSF&ord= date 4 Visiting Scientist Opportunity NCEP NSF • • • PI reviews NOAA spreadsheet for focus areas relevant to their grant Contacts their cognizant program director to discuss intent If agreed, PI makes contact with the NCEP POC • • • • • • NSF program director makes recommendation to support or decline request If approved, notification sent to NCEP by cognizant NSF program director. NCEP POC and PI discuss compatibility and logistics. If agreed, PI writes draft supplemental request to submit to NCEP. NCEP POC gets Center Director approval and provides letter of intent to collaborate If approved by Center Director, PI submits supplemental request and NCEP POC letter of intent to collaborate to NSF VSO Begins!!
