PhD programmes & calls
There are different fellowships within the
framework of many programmes or calls you can
apply for if you are planning to pursue PhD
studies:
- UdL fellowships (Vice-Chancellorship for Research)
- FI-DGR fellowships (Generalitat de Catalunya)
- FPI fellowships (Ministry of Economy & Competitiveness)
- FPU fellowships (Ministry of Education, Culture & Sport)
UdL PhD. fellowships
WHAT DO THEY OFFER / COVER?
• A 3-year contract (yearly renewal).
• A monthly pay.
• Free PhD registration fee for every academic
year of fellowship holding (you only have to pay
for administrative taxes).
• Possibility to apply for grants in two of the calls
for research support grants offered every year
by the Vice-Chancellorship for Research (grants
to attend and participate in conferences and
short research stays abroad or in Spain).
UdL PhD fellowships
MAIN REQUIREMENTS
 Applicants must have a Masters degree.
 Their PhD tutor must be part of a research group with an
R+D+i National Plan project awarded during the previous
year.
 Applicants’ degree title average mark must be 1.6/4
minimum.
 Degree must have been achieved not before 2005
FI-DGR PhD. fellowships
GENERALITAT DE CATALUNYA
WHAT DO THEY OFFER / COVER?
•A 3-year contract (yearly renewal).
•A monthly pay.
•PhD registration free for every academic year of scholarship
holding.
•An extra grant of 3,000.00 € at the end of the period if you
read your PhD thesis before the end of the fellowship or over
the next six months once it is finished.
•Possibility to apply for grants for short research stays abroad
or in Spain (BE-DGR call).
FI-DGR PhD fellowships
GENERALITAT DE CATALUNYA
MAIN REQUIREMENTS
 Applicants must have completed a Masters degree (or 60 ECTS
credits).
 PhD tutors must be part of an SGR Consolidated Research Group
(recognised by the Generalitat de Catalunya). According to UdL
group classification, these groups are rated as A.
 The PhD project must be linked to a financed competitive research
project allocated to the research group, or to a company-financed
agreement for research with a total minimum budget of 24,000.00 €.
FPI PhD fellowships
MINISTRY OF ECONOMY AND COMPETITIVENESS
WHAT DO THEY OFFER / COVER?
• A maximum 48-month fellowship divided in two periods:
– a maximum 2-year phase to complete the Masters degree
– a 2-year contract phase to carry out PhD studies, complete and
read the PhD thesis work and achieve PhD title.
• A monthly pay (around 1,100.00 €/month).
• According to the last FPI call, registration for a maximum amount of
60 CR at Masters level. Once the PhD period starts, fees will not be
covered.
• Possibility to apply for grants for short research stays abroad or in
Spain (FPI Short stays call).

MAIN REQUIREMENTS

GRADUATES WHO HAVE ACHIEVED 300 CR., WITH A
COMPLETE BACHELORS DEGREE AND A WHOLE OR PART
OF A MASTERS DEGREE GIVING ACCESS TO PhD STUDIES.
Applicants can apply for a maximum of 2 different fellowships linked
to different projects.
PhD thesis director must have a permanent post at the University or
at least a contract with it at least for the period covered by the FPI
fellowship. If this is not the case, there should be a co-director who
meets this requirement included in the application.
FPU PhD fellowships

WHAT DO THEY OFFER / COVER?
• A maximum 48-month fellowship divided in two periods:
– a maximum 2-year phase to complete the Masters degree.
– a 2-year contract phase to carry out PhD studies, complete and
read the PhD thesis work and achieve PhD title.
• A monthly pay (around 1,000.00 €/month).
• Registration in PhD programme during the academic
years coinciding with the fellowship period.
• Possibility to apply for grants for short research stays
abroad or in Spain (FPU short stays call).
FPU PhD. fellowships
MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, CULTURE AND SPORT
MAIN APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS
The last call was launched in April-May 2012.
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
– Have a DEA exam passed or be able to pass it by the end of the present
academic year or
– Meet the requirements to have access to the research period of PhD
studies or be registered to do so by the end of the academic year. In any
case a minimum amount of 300 ECTS credits is required from previous
studies: that is to say, both graduate and postgraduate (Master) studies.
– Have finished graduate studies after 1st January 2009 (for both degrees and
“graus” of 240 CR.) and after 1st January 2008 (for degrees and graus of 180
CR).
– Average mark of graduate studies equal or higher than 1.6 / 4.
– Foreign applicants must have their NIE before the call is launched.
