Applied Research Projects in
Dementia 2015
Background
 47,000 people with dementia in Ireland today (4,000 under the age of
65 years), and projected to reach 112,000 by 2036.
 Complex and challenging care needs
 Programme for Government (2011-2016) committed to developing ‘a
national Alzheimer’s and other dementia strategy’
 First National Dementia Strategy will be published before end 2014:
 DoH & HSE have partnered with Atlantic Philanthropies to support a series
of priority actions (€27.5m)
 HRB, DoH and Atlantic Philanthropies have signed collaborative
agreement to support a research programme (leadership & capacity,
applied projects - €4.57m)
Scope & Eligibility
Applications must address one or more of the indicative themes/topics
listed:
 Organisation & Delivery of Dementia Services
 Management & Decision Making in Dementia Care
 Social, Economic & Policy issues in Dementia Care
The emphasis in this call is on Prevention and Care rather than on
‘Cause’ or ‘Cure’
Applications deemed solely or predominantly biomedical research,
experimental medicine or clinical research projects where the centre of
gravity is not weighted towards the themes above will not be eligible.
Scope & Eligibility
This award scheme will not fund:
 applications which are solely literature reviews, audits, surveys,
needs assessments or technology developments (although these
elements may be part of an integrated research study);
 applications consisting solely of evaluations of an existing
service/intervention and where the programme of work does not
include an evidence-based development of these services.
 applications which are solely or predominately aimed at developing
infrastructure (e.g. bio-banking, establishing a database or patient
registers) without a predominant research element;
Funding Available (€1.75m)
Applicants can request two levels of support:
 Up to €330,000 for projects of up to 36 months (including
pilot/feasibility/acceptability studies for future interventions/trials)
 Up to €800,000 for definitive intervention studies/trials (up to 60
months) where the applicant can provide detailed evidence from
previous pilot, feasibility and acceptability studies and all aspects of
the study protocol have been finalised.
 Applicants thinking of submitting to this panel should thoroughly read the list of
questions that will be asked in the DEM-DI application form (see page 36/7 of
Guidance Notes)
 Contact others for guidance and/or HRB if you are in any doubt. If you submit
the application to the wrong panel, it cannot be moved later and will have to be
made ineligible.
Applicant Team
 Eligibility of Principal Investigator same as for HRA Awards 2015 (and
only one application per PI)
 Application must be submitted on behalf of a Host Institution in the
Republic of Ireland
 Up to 5 Co-applicants and up to 10 Collaborators can be involved (and
these can receive funding from the grant where justified.
As this is an Applied research scheme, pay particular attention to
justifying why this study should be done in Ireland and why now; show
that you have appropriate collaborations between research producers
and research users in order to maximise transferability of findings into
practice &/or policy; think carefully about your impact statement and
Knowledge Exchange & Dissemination plan/costs.
