For the Future Issue installation, Piet Langeveld and Gerda Postma teamed up and embarked on a month-long research on behalf of Subbacultcha! They were both inspired by the ideas of tools, manual work, and contemporary digital media. Gerda has a background in Fashion Design and Communication, Piet in Fine Arts and Performance. Both of them took as an intellectual starting point for this work a classic theory by the philosopher of technology Ernst Kapp: Ernst Kapp coined the term “organ projection” or “Organprojektion” (a hammer, for instance, as an organ projection of the human arm. Inspired by this theory, Gerda and Piet further pursued the idea that humans are determined in their past and future evolution by the materials and objects they use. In respect of recent technological advances it is interesting to see that physical matter disappears and tools are increasingly translated to the virtual realm. As a result of digitization and computerization, many of our tools do no are no longer tangible. Based on this observation, the installation features a series of virtual and physical objects, made to investigate movement and the intersections between the physical and the virtual realms. Subbacultcha! has published a publication of the project in an edition of 2000 copies. The ambitious experimental setup of the Future Issue was enabled by the helping hands of Andres Lovo, Chris Meighan and Michal Avraham. 1-4 Research Series of digital and manual tools 1 2 3 4 1-3 Levitating stones Series of stones, production: Michal Avraham 1 2 3 Levitation Display Design/Production Andres Lovo and Chris Meighan Silver Tube Tool Necklace art direction & design The Future Issue is made possible by Subbacultcha! and Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst. For the Future Issue installation, Piet Langeveld and Gerda Postma teamed up and embarked on a month-long research on behalf of Subbacultcha! After this month of research, production and collaborations they presented the results in a installation. As part of the preparations and PR of the project, Piet and Gerda we were commissioned to design a cover for Subbacultcha’s monthly magazine for the month of July 2014. In this issue they have filled in 8 spreads of the magazine. After finishing their research and setting up the installation, Piet and Gerda designed a booklet that reviews the project. The booklet is publiced by Subbacultcha! in an edition of 2000 copies. The installation is also presented at the Moving Futures Festival for which Gerda designed the folder/poster for the communication. 2 3 4 2 1 The Future Issue project is made possible by Subbacultcha! and Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst.
