“Omsetjarens stemme” av Martin Waldmeier
Waldmeier er fødd i 1984 i Basel (Sveits), og bur og arbeider i London og Warszawa / Born in 1984 in Basel
(CH), Waldmeier lives and works in London and Warsaw.
Dei tre institusjonane bak “Award for Young Curators 2014” er: MARCO (Museo de Arte Contemporánea), Vigo,
Spania, FRAC Lorraine (Fonds Regional d'Art Contemporain de Lorraine), Metz, Frankrike og SFKM (Sogn og
Fjordane Kunstmuseum) Førde, Norge, som er med for første gang.
Den sjette utgåva av prisen går i år til prosjektet med arbeidstittelen “Omsetjarens stemme” av Martin
Waldmeier. Den unge kuratoren ønskjer å utvikle ei utstilling som utforskar dei skiftande forholda mellom språk
og identitet i ei globalisert verd. Prosjektet hans vil undersøkje korleis det veksande behovet for omsetjing på
kvart nivå av det sosiale, kulturelle og økonomiske livet kan sjåast på, ikkje berre som ei utfordring eller ein
trussel, men òg som ei kjelde til kreativitet og erfaring, eller, på same tid, ein stad for undergravande, kritisk
aktivitet. Waldmeier sitt prosjekt vil verte vist i 2015 i Frankrike, så i Spania og Norge.

Martin Waldmeier (1984) er kurator og forskar. Han har studert Samtidskunsthistorie og Mediehistorie og fekk
Fulbright prisen for å halde fram med sine studiar i Kritisk visuell kultur ved Arts Institute i Chicago, USA. Han tek
for tida doktorgraden i Visuell kultur ved Goldsmiths, University of London; doktoroppgåva hans har tittelen
“Kunstnaromsetjaren”. Waldmeier har arbeidd som assisterande kurator og kunstnaropphaldskoordinator ved
PROGR Center for Cultural Production og som kurator og konstituert direktør ved Stadtgalerie (begge i Bern,
Sveits). Han har òg nyleg vunne Apexart's Unsolicited Proposal Program i New York med utstillinga "Ein
kameramanns død".
Juryen var samansett av Beatrice Josse, direktør ved FRAC LORRAINE, Ingrid Norum, konservator ved SFKM
og Iñaki Martínez Antelo, direktør ved MARCO. Dei tok si avgjerd etter å ha handsama 118 søknadar frå meir
enn 34 ulike land. Søknadanes kvalitet, levedyktighet og tilpassingsevne til dei tre ulike utstillingsfasilitetane vart
vurdert. Kvart medlem av Juryen utarbeidde ei liste over sine ti favoritt kandidatar og i eit påfølgande møte vart
lista redusert til to kandidatar. Etter å ha samtala med kvar av dei to finalistane, avgjorde Juryen samrøystes å
gje prisen til Martin Waldmeier. Prosjektet hans trefte ei nerve i interessefeltet til alle dei tre institusjonane.

THE MARCO / FRAC LORRAINE / SFKM AWARD FOR YOUNG CURATORS 2014
is:
“The Translator’s Voice” by Martin Waldmeier
The three institutions behind the “Award for Young Curators 2014” are: MARCO (Museo de Arte
Contemporánea), Vigo, Spain, FRAC Lorraine (Fonds Regional d'Art Contemporain de Lorraine), Metz, France
and SFKM (Sogn og Fjordane Kunstmuseum) Førde, Norway, who is participating for the first time.
The sixth edition of the award goes to the project with the working title “The Translator’s Voice” by Martin
Waldmeier. The young curator wishes to develop an exhibition exploring the changing relationships between
language and identity in the context of globalization. His project will examine how the growing need for translation
at every level of social, cultural, and economic life may be considered not only a challenge or a threat but also a
source of creativity and experience, or, at the same time, a place of subversive, critical activity. Waldmeier’s
project will be shown in 2015 in France, then in Spain and Norway.
Martin Waldmeier (1984) is a curator and researcher. He studied History of contemporary art and of media, and
obtained a Fulbright Award to pursue critical visual studies in the United States at the Arts Institute in Chicago. He
is currently pursuing doctoral studies in visual cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London; his dissertation is
entitled “The Artist Translator.” Waldmeier has worked as assistant curator and residency coordinator at PROGR
Center for Cultural Production and as curator and interim director at Stadtgalerie (both in Bern, Switzerland). He
has also recently been the winner of Apexart's Unsolicited Proposal Program in New York with the exhibition
"Death of a Cameraman".
The Jury consisted of Beatrice Josse, director at FRAC LORRAINE, Ingrid Norum, curator at SFKM and Iñaki
Martínez Antelo, director at MARCO. They made their decision after handling 118 applications from more than 34
different countries. The proposals were considered regarding their quality, viability and adequacy to the
characteristics of the three different exhibition spaces. Each member of the jury prepared a list of their ten
favourite candidates. At the jury meeting they narrowed the list down to two finalists. After talking to both
candidates, the choice fell unanimously on Martin Waldmeier. His project hit a nerve in all the three different
institutions’ field of interest.
